The Ascension Parish Master Gardeners Association, under the direction of the LSU AgCenter, presents a four-part spring series of educational workshops with gardening and landscaping tips geared to both novice and advanced gardeners. The workshops are hosted by Ascension Parish Library on the following topics:

Fertilizer – the Secret to Successful Plant Growth: Tuesday, March 11 at 6:30 PM in Galvez Don’t be fooled! Successful gardeners are not born with a green thumb. They know that plants, just like people, need food for growth; but facing the many different types of fertilizer at the nursery can be intimidating. Butch Drewes, horticulturalist and manager of Naylor’s Garden Center, will discuss how to fertilize your plants correctly by exploring fertilizer types and effective procedures recommended to achieve maximum growth for your gardens and landscape. Call 622-3339 to register.

How to Plant – Everything: Tuesday, March 18 at 6:30 PM in Gonzales Often the first step in a process is the most important, and this is especially true in gardening. Beginner gardeners quickly learn that planting a tree or rose bush correctly is quite different from planting daylilies or sunflower seeds. Gina Hebert, horticulture research associate at Hammond Research Station, will help us uncover the secrets to successful plantings, and discover techniques for planting everything, from seeds to trees—so you can provide a good beginning for all of your plant materials. Call 647-3955 to register.

Gardening Inside the Box: Tuesday, March 25 at 6:30 PM in Donaldsonville Our gardens, particularly vegetable gardens, often follow a traditional predictability. What worked for grandpa works for me! However, research and experience can reveal innovative methods and procedures to make our gardening more productive. Craig Roussel, Ascension Parish horticulture agent with LSU AgCenter, will discuss how to create a raised bed garden to maximize space, minimize time, and increase productivity. Call 473-8052 to register.

Too Darn Hot – But Not for Tropicals: Tuesday, April 1 at 6:30 PM in Dutchtown Don’t just dream about lush gardens during the warmer, even HOT, months of the year. You can create your own tropical paradise in your own backyard. Dr. Jeff Kuehny, professor with the LSU AgCenter and director of the Burden Center, will explore the use of colorful, dramatic tropicals in the south Louisiana landscape, and give important information for growing these plants successfully. Call 673-8699 to register.

A scension Parish Library is hosting a six-week series of readings and discussions about World War II as a national and personal experience for Americans and their adversaries. The program, I’ll Be Seeing Y ou …

America and World War II, is being offered as part of the Readings in Literature and Culture (RELIC) series sponsored by the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities (LEH).

I’ll Be Seeing You … America and World War II meets each Tuesday starting March 25 and concluding on Tuesday, April 29 from 6-8 PM, at the library’s Gonzales location, 708 S. Irma Boulevard. Readers, who are interested in committing to the program, must register in advance, either in person or by calling the library at 647-3955. Every reader receives a set of program books to check out, so they must have a current library card or apply for one. Registration is limited .

Dr. Charles Elliott, Assistant Director of Southeast Louisiana Studies at Southeastern Louisiana University, leads six sessions with open discussions supported by several texts: Incredible V ictory: The Battle of Midway by Walter Lord; Guadalcanal Diary by Richard Tregaskis; Japan at War: An Oral History by Haruko Taya Cook; The Mighty Eighth: The Air War in Europe as Told by the Men Who Fought It by Gerald Astor; D-Day, June 6, 1944: The Climactic Battle of World War II by Stephen Ambrose; Voices from the Third Reich: An Oral History by Johannes Steinhoff; and Double V ictory: A Multicultural History of America in World War II by Ronald Takaki.

I’ll Be Seeing You … offers readers a glimpse into the nature of the war as Americans fought it on the high seas of the Pacific and in the plains of Europe, including the perspective of America’s principal opponents – Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan. “The largest war ever fought on the planet shaped the course of world history, and especially the direction of our nation. While World War II from the American perspective is always going to be viewed as a just and victorious war, we have an obligation to reexamine assumptions and evidence about what shaped the war’s outcome and how war fighting related to American values and human behavior. The program’s readings will provide for many opportunities to explore these issues and appreciate the experience of war,” observed Jim Segreto, Director of RELIC Library Programs for LEH.

Bones of Father of Europe Found Edited from Discovery News

Bones from Charlemagne's golden casket in Aachen Cathedral in Germany likely do belong to the warrior-king, say Swiss and German scientists who have studied the remains for 26 years.

"It might appear as an obvious conclusion but it isn't. Charlemagne was exhumed and reburied many times with parts of his body given away as relics, so identifying his skeleton is not an easy task," said Frank Rühli, Head of the Center for Evolutionary Medicine at the University of Zurich in Switzerland.

"The bones appear to belong to a single individual, an old and rather tall man. This matches contemporary descriptions of Charlemagne," Rühli said.

Charlemagne managed to forge the first

empire in Europe after the demise of the Roman Empire. He died, possibly of pleurisy, after having ruled as Emperor for just over 13 years. Buried in the German Cathedral the same day as his death, on Jan. 18, 814, the father of Europe has not really rested in peace.

His tomb was first opened by the Emperor Otto III in the year 1000. According to contemporary chronicles, as Otto entered the underground chamber, he was struck by the vision of Charlemagne seated upon a throne, wearing a golden crown and holding a scepter, his fingernails sticking out the gloves.

"He had not lost any of his members to decay, except only the tip of his nose. Emperor Otto replaced this with gold, took a tooth from Charles's mouth, walled up the entrance to the chamber and withdrew," the Chronicle of Novalesia, written about 1026, reported.

In 1165, Frederick I, also known as Barbarossa, re-opened the tomb, displayed the remains as holy relics, then buried Charles in a marble sarcophagus beneath the floor of the cathedral. Fifty years later, Frederick II re-interred him in a casket made of gold and silver.

In 1349, some of Charlemagne's bones were removed and kept as relics by Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV. After five undisturbed centuries, the founder of the Holy Roman Empire was exhumed again in 1861 for research purposes.

Scientists reconstructed the skeletal remains and came to understand what may have been behind the emperor's names: Charlemagne or Carolus Magnus (meaning "Charles the Great" as well as "Charles the Big"). His skeleton suggested he was surprisingly tall for his time.

In 1988, scientists secretly opened his sarcophagus one more time to reveal 94 bones and bone fragments. The researchers also discovered bones in a golden bust that were believed to belong to the famous leader.

More recently, in 2010, Church authorities made available to Rühli and colleagues the left tibia from the Shrine. X-rays and CT scan analysis confirmed that Charlemagne was indeed a tall man, standing about 1.84 meters (6 feet) tall. "He must have towered

over 98 out of a 100 persons in his time," Rühli said.

Oddly, Charles's father, known as Pepin the Short, was just around 5 feet tall. Analyzing the bone, Rühli and Australian colleague Maciej Henneberg also discovered that Charlemagne may have been thin. However, no serious illness was detected in the bones.
