“A ustedes no les toca conocer el tiempo y la hora”, le dice Jesús a sus discípulos en la primera lectura (Hechos 1:7). Después de la ascensión del Señor, muchos se preguntaban cuándo volvería. Algunos pensaron que sería en un corto tiempo. Esto podía haberlos paralizados, así como paralizar la misión de la Iglesia. Después de todo, ¿por qué planificar si el fin del mundo vendría cualquier día y en cualquier momento? Pero los ángeles reprendieron inmediatamente la holgazanería de los discípulos: ¿por qué están ahí parados con la mirada fija en él? Ya se fue, así es que ahora manos a la obra. El tamaño y el alcance de la obra que él dejó es impresionante. A los discípulos se les pide proclamar el Evangelio, bautizar a los creyentes, dar testimonio, profetizar, evangelizar, pastorear y enseñar. Y todo esto tienen que hacerlo alrededor del mundo entero, hasta el último rincón de la tierra. Pero esta obra no era sólo para que la completaran los discípulos que vivían en el tiempo de Jesús, sino más bien son todos los discípulos de todos los tiempos quienes deben completarla. Por tanto es también nuestra misión hoy llevar a cabo estas obras. Pero no se espera que hagamos todo esto solos, pues el Espíritu Santo que Jesús sopló sobre los apóstoles, que viene a nosotros en nuestro bautismo y cuya venida celebramos el domingo de Pentecostés, está con nosotros. “Cuando el Espíritu Santo descienda sobre ustedes, los llenará de fortaleza”, dijo Jesús (Hechos 1:8). Cuando el Espíritu Santo descendió sobre los apóstoles pudieron hablar en diferentes lenguas y ser entendidos por todos los pueblos del mundo. Que las palabras que pronunciamos hoy tengan el poder de consolar, de desafiar y de sanar; y que tengan el poder de continuar la misión de Cristo. Pregunta del Día ¿Cuán a menudo me quedo parado y sólo mirando alrededor cuando hay tanto trabajo por hacer, cuando están sucediendo injusticias o cuando hay alguien con alguna necesidad? ¿Qué debo hacer para estimularme a actuar día tras día?

Easter Celebrating the season as Catholics

Celebrate the Real Presence!

Easter celebrates the Resurrection of Jesus. But what does that mean? In the Gospels, Jesus predicts His own Passion. This includes His suffering, crucifixion and death. In addition to this He tells us that He will endure in fulfillment of the Scriptures. However, this will happen only after the stone is rolled away and the tomb is found empty. After this, Jesus’ predictions are truly fulfilled. Jesus first appears in risen form to Mary Magdalene in the Gospel of John 20:14. He then appears to the other women and disciples in Matthew 28:9. His resurrection is bodily and com-plete. When the resurrected Christ visited His disciples in the Gospel of Luke, He understands their disbelief. As a result, He allows them to touch Him. When this occurred they truly believed. He even eats with them. This is a sign of His real presence. This is seen in the Gospel of Luke 24:39-43. The disciples are filled with amazement and joy at the presence of the Risen Christ. We too are filled with amazement and joy at the real presence of the Risen Christ throughout the Mass. We as Catholics believe that Christ is really present in the celebrant in the Word, in the Church community gathered at Mass, and especially in the Holy Eucharist. The new life of the Easter Resurrection “reinstates us in God’s grace” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, #654). In Romans 6:4 it states, “so that as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.”

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In Ireland and the United Kingdom, Mother’s Day is over. “Mothering Sunday” was on the Fourth Sunday of Lent. Long ago, people were freed from work to travel on this day to the parish where they were baptized, their “Mother Church.” Often, people were reunited with their mothers on this day. Employers would release their workers and servants for this visit. The American celebration, while based on this custom, really has to do with an anti-war movement of mothers in Civil War times. They crusaded for better sanitary conditions for their sons. When President Wilson instituted the first Mother’s Day in 1912, it was a day to fly the flag in honor of mothers whose children had died in battle. Knowing the tradition is a good balance to our celebration today. We can enfold in prayer the mothers who have suffered the loss of their children in war.

COMMISSIONED TO LIVE IN THE WORLD

In today’s scriptures we hear two different stories about commissioning. In the Acts of the Apostles Peter leads the assembly in prayer that the Lord will choose and commission the person to replace Judas among the Twelve. In the Gospel Jesus prays that His chosen disciples might be consecrated, or made holy. Jesus does not ask His Father to keep the disciples separate from the world, but instead sends them out into the world. While we might think that holy people are set apart from the world, we cannot hear today’s scriptures without realizing that God’s holy, chosen people are commissioned to live in the midst of the world, where they can reveal the love of God that makes the entire world holy.

TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — Matthias was added to the eleven apostles (Acts 1:15-17, 20a, 20c-26). Psalm — The Lord has set his throne in heaven (Psalm 103). LIVING STONES Today we celebrate the feast of the Ascension and the promise of the Holy Spirit. The Apostles gathered around Jesus as He asked them to wait for the “promise of the Father”, the Holy Spirit coming upon them, and the great commission of being witnesses of Christ to the world. We are called to live the faith as a living stone, being part of a spiritual house, precious in the sight of God.

In living the life the way that Jesus taught us, loving God and neighbor, our hearts become enlightened and experience hope even in the most difficult of circumstances. We become living stones for others as they see God working in our lives and in community as we celebrate being “Church”, our Lord’s body.

We also celebrate today all the Mom’s that have touched our lives and sacrificed so much for us. We give thanks for their love that they gave unconditionally to us. Today let us also celebrate Holy Mother Church which nurtures us in our faith’s journey and accepts and loves us unconditionally.

Mother Angelica (An Amazing Living Stone) shares with us. “As the Holy Spirit proceeds from the love of the Father and the Son in the Trinity, as children brought forth from the love of husband and wife, so the Church, this gift of the Father, wedded to His Son, constantly brings forth the fruit of holiness through the power of the Spirit in all her children.”

The Church gives Jesus to her children in the Eucharist, heals their wounds in Confession, ennobles their love through the Sacrament of Marriage, makes mere men priests of God through Ordination and sons of God in Baptism, enriches them with gifts in Confirmation and then lightens their burden on their journey home through Anointing.

The Church is a Mother because she is a Bride who is forever bringing forth children of light, pillars of holiness, sources of inspiration, challengers of truth, and defenders of the Faith.” Isn’t it awesome to be a Living Stone

St Joan of Arc Columbiettes Auxiliary #11317

Please join us for the Mildred Anne Baylis Scholarship Fundraiser Dinner. It will be held in our parish hall on May 26th from 5 to 9 p.m.

Adults $10 Children ages 5 to 12 $5, under age 5 are Free. Tickets will be available after Sunday Mass. If you have any questions, please call Awilda Berrios at 352 442 5797.

St. Joan of Arc Columbiettes Auxiliary Council #11317 and the St. Joan of Arc Council of Catholic Women are sponsoring a DIAPER DRIVE to support our local Catholic Charities Pregnancy Support program. We are asking the parish community to participate by donating baby diapers, wipes and infant clothes. The donations can be brought to the gift shop during Mass times or business hours. The pregnancy support program needs diapers in size newborn 4, 5 and 6. The need is especially critical during the summer months. The drive will start now and finish on June 24th. On June 24th, the ladies will host a Sunday ice cream social at 2:30 PM in the hall. We will display all the items donated during this drive. All members of the parish are invited!

St. Vincent de Paul Society at St. Joan of Arc Happy Mother's Day to all the mothers in the parish! Mary, the mother of our Lord Jesus, is our role model to inspire us to be the best mother we can be. The mothers we meet on our home visits are trying hard to care for their children. They sometimes need our help and call us to do something toward that end. Bless them and all mothers who try very hard to care for their families.

RECYCLING UPDATE: In addition to NEWSPAPER and ALUMINUM CANS, we are now recycling CARDBOARD, PHONE BOOKS, MAGAZINES and OLD MAIL. There are New Blue Bins (1 at the Maintenance Garage and 1 at the side of the Hall). Please place your recyclables in the Blue Bins (ALUMINUM CANS will still go in the shed to the right of the garage). Please break down your cardboard boxes to allow for more room. NOTE: NO PLASTIC OR TRASH PLEASE. Thank you to our 100% Volunteer Grounds Crew for getting this for us and for ALL you do! All recycling proceeds go to support our Grounds Crew needs.

Announcing the Good News: Let Mary Lead You to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

Are you looking for a way to increase and deepen your relationship with Jesus through our Blessed Mother while finding FELLOWSHIP within the parish? We are looking for leaders who are willing to ‘retreat’ with us during the summer with the process called:

33 Days to Morning Glory. The process will begin for these leaders on Tuesday, June 5th and will continue until Sunday, July 15th at the 11:00 a.m. Mass where you will consecrate your lives to Jesus through Mary.

Leaders will also be trained during the summer to lead small groups for the entire parish beginning September 4th with consecration on October 7th. This journey will lead us to a greater understanding of Mary’s role in our salvation, and how our Blessed Mother is waiting for us to open our hearts to her so that she may lead us to her Son, Jesus. This is a simple, yet profound “do-it yourself” retreat that only requires a few minutes of daily reading with pondering throughout the day, and weekly small group meetings. Meetings will be Tuesday, 6 pm-7:30 pm, June 5, 12, 19, 26, July 3, 10 and July 15 at the 11:00 am Mass. Catholic Charities Respite program is looking for volunteers who want to have fun and make a difference in someone’s life. The Respite program serves the elderly with memory loss issues. If you can share 4 hours one day a week and you have a good sense of humor, we need you! If you would like more information, please call Catherine Kennedy at 727-210-9786.
