FORT WORTH CIVIL ENGINEER Vol.8 No. 3 wSEPTEMBER 2012 1 At our June meeting our nominating committee presented a slate of officers to be installed at our September meeting. Sam Hinojosa, PE was nominated as our President for 2012-2013. Since that time Sam has accepted an opportunity to move to Halff’s Conroe office. While Sam’s new opportunity left a void, his departure created an opportunity for the Branch Board to evaluate how we function. The Branch Board met and discussed a number of options arriving at a decision to eliminate the President-elect position and reduce our Board from 8 to 7 members. Moving forward we plan to ask our Directors to take on more defined roles rather than “taking on” projects as they come up during the year. At our meeting on September 17, we will first ask for your approval to change the Branch By-laws to remove the President Elect position from our Board. Then we will ask you to approve the following slate of officers and Board members for 2012-2013. President – Devon Tiner, PE, PMP Vice President/Secretary – Leah Hodges, PE Treasurer – Mandy Clark, PE Director – Scott Berman, PE Director – Caleb Hing, PE Director – Justin Bosworth, EIT Past President – Carl Krogness, PE I congratulate Mandy in stepping up and taking on the Treasurer role. I would like to congratulate Sam and wish him well as he embarks on a new chapter in his career. Sam has been very dedicated in serving the Branch through the years, and he will be missed. The 2012-2013 year brings two notable conferences to Fort Worth: The Texas Section ASCE Fall 2012 Meeting and ASCE’s Pipelines 2013. The Texas Section ASCE Fall 2012 Meeting is scheduled to be held November 7-10, 2012 at the Renaissance Worthington hotel in downtown Fort Worth. If you cannot attend the entire conference, I also encourage you to consider the continuing education opportunities on Thursday, November 8. See page 8 of the newsletter for more information on the Conference. ASCE’s Pipelines 2013 Conference is scheduled to be held June 23-26, 2013. The program is taking shape. Currently there is a call for papers for the conference. See page 9 for the key dates for this conference. I encourage each of you to consider taking advantage of one, if not both, of these conferences. I appreciated the opportunity to serve as the Branch President this year. This year has been a success because of the dedication of our member- ship, especially the board members and committee chairs. I am grateful for their support and encourage all to support our Branch in the years to come. Texas Section’s Fall Conference is just around the corner! The registration should be opened any day now, so keep an eye on it. We will have participants from all over the world thanks in large part to our partnership with the International Conference on Sustainable

Design, Engineering, and Construction (ICSDEC). Furthermore, the ASCE’s Construction Institute (CI) will have its very first Congress with us also. If you don’t think conferences can be fun, think again! If you happen to run into Curtis Beitel and Mark Assaad, say thank you, take them out to eat, hug them, buy them flowers, or just show your appreciation the way you know how. They were instrumental in getting those organizations I mentioned above to participate with us in Fort Worth this Fall. I am sure they will both share the glory with the rest of the host committee. So, kudos to all of you!

The Spring 2013 conference is going to be held at Corpus Christi. For the first time ever, we will have partnership with TxDOT, USACE, and Port of Corpus Christi, just to name a few. The call for paper for that conference will come to an end 8/15/12. But if you have interesting projects that you would like to share, excellent papers that you would like to publish please do let me know. I can help facilitate that. The requirement for the abstract is fairly simple: 250words. I’m sure you can write 250 words during the Olympic commercial break. In addition to that though, Corpus Christi’s Host Committee committed to a very exciting program catered specifically for students. Please do keep an eye out for them as the details roll in.

The Centennial Celebration Committee is taking on some monumental tasks to ensure we have a truly memorable celebration for years to come. And in order to achieve that, they also would love to have more help. If you feel you want to get on the Centennial bandwagon, feel free to get in touch with me, I will make sure that proper channel will reach out to you and get you connected! I can be easily reached at [email protected].

In summary, football season is just around the corner, the Fall Conference is just a little bit after that. I’m excited, are you?

FORT WORTH, Texas – June 25, 2012 – Rob-ert F. Pence, P.E., BCEE, president and CEO of Freese and Nichols, has been honored by Ernst & Young LLP as a finalist for the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year ® 2012 Award in the Southwest Area North (North Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Wichita, Kansas) program. Pence and other regional

finalists were recognized during a gala on Saturday, June 23, 2012, at the Hyatt Regency Dallas Hotel in Dallas.

The Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year program honors business leaders who have demonstrated extraordinary success in areas such as innovation, financial performance, and personal commitment to their businesses and communities. Nominees are reviewed by a panel of eight judges composed of local business leaders, previous award winners, leading CEOs and private capital investors.

“Bob exemplifies the very spirit of this award through his tremendous leadership and vision,” said Bob Herchert, chairman of the board of Freese and Nichols. “Even though the firm has existed for 118 years, Bob continues seeking out innovative solutions to strengthen the firm’s position and address the changing needs of our industry. He has proven to be a worthy successor to a long line of entrepreneurs that includes our founder, John Hawley, Simon Freese and Marvin Nichols. These men knew that in order to succeed, it is necessary to find new opportunities each and every day.”

Pence joined Freese and Nichols in 1978 as a design engineer, follow-ing a two-year engagement with the U.S. Army and two years as a research assistant while earning his master’s degree in civil engineer-ing at Texas A&M University. He was appointed president and CEO of Freese and Nichols in 2002, leading the company through the difficult financial period following September 11 and into a highly productive expansion that continues today with the firm’s pursuit of perfor-mance excellence.

HISTORY AND HERITAGE

You and I, being completely unbiased, know that Civil Engineers have throughout the ages been SUPER HEROS! But since not much is written in a fashion that portrays that truth, you might enjoy this rare fictional account of one such hero/engineer.

The author of the above-named book is Stefan Jaeger, Managing Director, Strategic, Board and International Initiatives for ASCE. The fol-lowing book review by Ken Maschke, A. M. ASCE appeared in the July 2012 newsletter History & Heritage of American Civil Engineering. “When the bombs went at the American News Corp. building, Scott Carter found himself stranded in an elevator between floors. As the shaft began to fill with smoke, the random assortment of office workers held in the confined car began to panic. Lucky for them, Scott Carter was a structural engineer – the very person who had overseen design of the steel-framed ANC building. Carter coached his com-patriots into prying open the elevator doors, clawing through the drywall enclosure, and running to the emergency exit stairs. Reaching safety was only the beginning for Scott, now his sense of duty to society and the profession compelled him to evaluate the safety of the remaining structure.

Stefan Jaeger’s novel, The Jackhammer Elegies, imagines the heroism of a civil engineer placed in extraordinary circumstances. While not the first book elaborate on the engineers’ talents, Jaeger uses his familiarity with civil engineering, gleaned by working for the ASCE, to craft a story with the little nuances that will make real civil engineers nod with understanding. It’s also fun to imagine a fellow engineer as a Jack Bauer-like hero — thwarting terrorists, joining an FBI investigation, and pursuing the girl. Such a portrayal of civil engineering is also sure to illicit some “yeah right” moments from actual engineer readers. Jaeger goes to lengths describing main character Scott Carter’s second-guessing, but we know it’s never really in doubt that he’ll have the solution. I appreciated the surprisingly realistic description of the industry standard modeling and analysis programs, but I can attest that the super-fast reliable results for a collapse analysis are still fiction. Carter’s schedule is similar to many ASCE members, but it’s amusing to juxtapose the real-world branch meeting experience with the stated importance and intensity of the fictional account. Nevertheless, professionally active engineers will find common cause with Scott Carter and identify with the day-to-day portrayal.

At the heart of The Jackhammer Elegies are opposing views of how civil engineers should interact with the public and promote the pro-fession. Young idealistic engineers are likely to identify with the hero, but even the villainous caricatures are based on prevailing attitudes held by some practicing engineers. There is yet work to be done to cast civil engineering as a profession of technical experts committed to sustainable development and stewardship of the infrastructure that makes modern society possible. Scott Carter would be the perfect poster boy just as imagined.

While it may not achieve instant classic status, The Jackhammer Elegies is a fun, fast-paced read. Civil engineers will appreciate the concerted effort to speak their language. The general public may be impressed with role civil engineers play in keeping the engine of infrastructure running.”

Sounds like a good read. Google the book and see some other reviews, all of which are positive.
