It seems only a short time ago
that our Armstrong Siddeley Car
Club was enjoying the brilliance
of Bendigo and the joys of
Tasmania. Now autumn with its
endearing crispness is with us. Is
it possible an aged battery may
be found wanting by oncoming
cooler weather? Just a thought,
as these long standing servants
do give out at the most
inconvenient times!
Since the Rally a further improvement has been added to the
Website found at www.armstrongsiddeley.org. We have now
moved to a position-based email address system and
nationally Club officers and contacts have been provided
with their own email address. Until now there has been a
combination of organisational email contact addresses and
personal email addresses provided, which apart from being
fairly untidy attracted unnecessary junk mail to personal
email addresses. The ASOC (UK) has also moved to a
system of position-based email addresses.
Last month I mentioned John Graham as part of his role as
Director Pre-War Models had also taken on the role of Pre-
War Contact. Ian Handley now has been appointed to the role
of Director Post-War Models. Hugh Boulter as Vice-
President also has the Director Media role. These roles are
not intended to detract from members already engaged in

President’s Message from Tony Carter
specific activities. The purpose is to focus the Board on important areas of Club activity giving each
Board member an area of responsibility in our ongoing future planning.
Earlier in the year the Board Working Party on Privacy developed an initial policy which was adopted at
our Bendigo Meeting. The Working Party consists of Hugh Boulter, John Graham and Ian Handley. The
positional based email system is an example of an action flowing from that policy. We also established a
Working Party of Hugh Boulter, Sandy Cameron and Ian Handley to review our insurance requirements
and they are progressively working through those matters.
As ever I receive good news and not so good news. Geoff Tuckwell, who has been out of commission, is
back online. He is still enquiring about things he thinks he may have missed by not being at the Bendigo
Rally. Joseph Dalgleish also missed Bendigo attending to family matters and our thoughts go to Joseph
and Jonathan’s mother on the loss of her brother, Ray, in the USA. Someone commented at Bendigo that
we received many emails from Geoff and Joseph during the Rally. They both felt they were missing
something and it was a grand Rally.
My saddest news was hearing of the passing of our 2011 Club Person of the Year, Garth Pennington. I
was privileged to make that award to Garth in Adelaide when the Board visited the city coinciding with
the SA Branch Councours that year. Garth Pennington worked without fanfare on projects for this Club,
which are invaluable research instruments underpinning issues we deal with today. To Barbara and her
family I extend the kind thoughts and sympathy of all members of the Club at this most difficult time.
Until next time ... go carefully,

Garth Joseph Pennington 1949 – 2013
A man of many talents
Garth passed away on the 5th April 2013. Many of
you will know that he was diagnosed with pancreatic
cancer in July of last year.
The old car movement, and in particular Armstrong
Siddeley enthusiasts around the World, have lost a
stalwart. Garth’s involvement with our cars arose
from living next-door, as a teenager, to George and
Jeanie Hume during the 1960s. Of course Garth and
George’s daughter Barbara became childhood
sweethearts and were married in 1969. George
passed his enthusiasm for our cars to both Barbara
and Garth and from the late 1960s taught Garth how
to work on Armstrong Siddeley cars. George, Jeanie,
Garth and Barbara reformed the South Australian
branch in 1970 with Garth as secretary. At the same
time Garth was commencing a successful career in
what was then the PMG (now Telstra) and was also
taking an interest in other matters. Both he and
Barbara were involved with the foundation of the
Zero Population Growth movement at a time when
the now-accepted science of climate change and its connection with population levels was little
understood by most people. Throughout his life Garth was interested in society as a whole.
Garth prospered within Telstra and demonstrated an ability to perform a wide variety of tasks. When
I first met him in 1980 he was busy installing the first computerised exchanges in Adelaide. He
became national Quality Control Manager and worked as a lecturer; these were just a few of the roles
that he took within Telstra. When the opportunity arose, Garth accepted early retirement in order to
pursue other interests. By this time he'd been with Telstra for about 30 years. Music (Garth played
the saxophone) and hi-fi equipment were of particular interest and he launched a brand of speakers
which he designed with only a fraction of the resources available to mainstream manufacturers.
These were marketed through a number of retailers in Australia. To develop a commercially
acceptable product like this reflected his incredible ability and determination and, as a proud
Australian, he ensured each set wore the “Made in Australia” label. Subsequently, he focused on car
restoration work, carrying out body restorations on two Sapphires, one of which now resides in the
National Motor Museum. He performed a complete body restoration on a mid-1930s Singer Le
Mans. In addition to performing much restoration work on Armstrong Siddeley Sapphires owned by
the family, Garth restored the 1934 “1812”. This car was awarded a restoration award by the
Sporting Car club of SA. Garth developed a successful business restoring the decorative timber
found within our cars and others from England.
Garth had a fascination for all things motoring. He built a replica Mini Cooper “S” for use in amateur
motor sport and owned a series of interesting new cars of which he was justifiably proud.
To say that Garth made a significant contribution to the Armstrong Siddeley cause would be a
massive understatement. He held numerous committee positions within the reconstituted SA Branch
and maintained an active involvement in the Armstrong Siddeley movement during the ensuing 43
years. He was an early director of the Club and later the Membership Officer. He created the
computer program for use in the judging system now used nationally. He catalogued the John Bull
Southern Sphinx | May-June 2013 3
collection, and in typical
Garth attention to detail,
obtained advice from
overseas as to the most
appropriate folders to ensure
the long-term protection of
the numerous documents
within the collection. He
appreciated the looming
difficulty of lost expertise and
produced several videos. The
first of these dealt with the
restoration of the Post-War
18hp water pump and I
understand this video is now
sold worldwide by our Club.
The second deals with the
removal and refitting of a Pre-
War gearbox. When working with Garth on Club projects I often felt I was riding on his coat tails,
such was his ability and enthusiasm. Our most recent Southern Sphinx credited this DVD in part to
the SA Branch. To ensure the correct recording of history, let me make it clear that Garth initiated
and created the DVD. Garth kindly credited me at the end of the DVD with having assisted - my
involvement was trivial, but as with everything he did, I am proud to be associated with it. Garth
said he was happy to undertake these projects as his contribution to the historic car movement as a
whole, and hoped that those with other brands of cars would also benefit.
Last year Garth completed, for the Club, a database with some 650 entries identifying technical
resources for the maintenance and restoration of Armstrong Siddeley cars. This is the only database
of its kind in the world and will be of enormous benefit to members when made available. He
developed considerable computer skills and produced the Rally books for many rallies in South
Australia and other states. Each of these projects took a massive amount of time and reflected his
passion and considerable abilities. Garth’s contribution was recognised with a the Club Person
award in 2011.
Garth was a kind, principled person who helped a lot of people, and our lives are much the poorer
for his passing. We have lost
a dear and trusted friend. Our
Club and the Sporting car club
of SA were well represented,
both in attendance of members
and historic cars, at the
celebration of Garth’s life.
Our sincere condolences go to
Barbara and family.

Report - South Australia - March Run to Lobethal
The unseasonably cool weather may have dissuaded some from attending the March ASCC run,
organized by Graham Drewett, to the Lobethal property of Grant and Jenny Harvey, who collect
trucks, tractors, engines and cars in glorious profusion !
It would have been nicer to see more attendees, but those who ventured forth included Graham
Drewett, who organized it, Ian and Marylyn Bell in the Valiant, John Colebrook, who brought Paul
and Jenny Caro, visiting Adelaide as passengers on the “Queen Mary” en route to Capetown, and
lastly, the Paltridges, in the only Siddeley to attend.
The Harvey’s property, “Rusty Hill”, is located just out of Lobethal which we reached from the start
at Gilles’ Plains via Gorge Road. On arrival, Graham set up our barbecue, while the rest of us began
to inspect the HUGE collection --- and WHAT a collection. Many of the items are “goers” whilst
others are “for restoration”, and yet others are “spares bins (even Graham can’t boast of owning
TWO Kenworth prime-movers with a choice of four spare rear axle assemblies of different ratios!).
Some of the stationary engines were started by Grant, including a big Petter-Fielding single-cylinder
diesel, which both deafened and suffocated us, with Stygian black clouds of smoke from its open
exhaust. However, a smaller Ruston semi-diesel resolutely defied all his attempts to start it, even
to the extent of running slowly backwards while emitting a vile stench of partly burned fuel. He
gave up at that point !
Lunch was taken at that time in
typical ASCC fashion after which,
at about 2:30, John and the
Caros had to leave in order to
return to their ship which was
set to sail at 6:30pm. It was
great to see them, especially as
they weren’t able to get to the
National Rally this year in
Bendigo, but we hope to see
them again in 2015 for our own
Rally .
The inspections then continued
until about 3:30, when the ladies
went off to do the “garden” and
“afternoon Teas” thing and the
remaining males did their
“secret men’s business” until a
quarter to five, when we all left
to return to Adelaide via the
Freeway.
Our thanks are due to Graham,
who organized the outing, and to
the Harveys for allowing us to
see their impressive collection.
A pleasant and informative
day !!

TECHNICAL : Another Great Initiative of the late Garth Pennington - New DVD !
Removing and Re-fitting the Gearbox/Axle assembly of a 1934 Armstrong Siddeley 12HP
A DVD has been made describing
the removing and refitting of the
rear axle/gearbox assembly of a
1934 Armstrong Siddeley 12hp.
The presentation, prepared by
Garth Pennington, runs for about
43 minutes and describes, in detail,
the work involved in such a large
undertaking. He kindly offered it
to the ASCC to assist in its efforts
in providing first class technical
services to members.
The target audience is the car
enthusiast and modern trade
mechanic. Viewing this
presentation would allow one to
gauge whether or not they have
the skills and facilities to do the
job.
The presentation also covers the
safety issues and typical problems
encountered performing work of
this nature.
It may be of some value for other
pre-war cars with a similar torque
tube gearbox/axle assembly.
The DVDs are available from A/S
Spares at $20.00 each.
NB: The March/April edition of the
Southern Sphinx incorrectly
reported that this was an initiative
of the SA Branch of the ASCC when,
in fact, it was entirely Garth’s idea
and work. I apologise to the
Pennington family for a clumsy
error at such a sensitive time. - ED

Federal Rally - Bendigo - March 2013
“The Early Gold Rush Rally” If anybody asks you to describe an Armstrong
Siddeley Car Club Federal Rally, an answer might
be: “An extended week-end shared with a large
number of long-standing and good friends, where
you show your cars, catch up and generally have a
great time”.
This premise, combined with views expressed in
the March/April President’s Message from page
one of that issue of the Southern Sphinx,
summarise what the 2013 Rally Committee set out
to achieve in the Autumn of 2012. We were also
mindful of the decision taken at Tanunda in 2005,
which enabled popular holiday destinations such
as Echuca and Bendigo to be considered as Federal
Rally destinations, away from traditional holiday
times, where Rally committees have some
bargaining power with accommodation and
catering suppliers, and are able to select intervals
that in all probability will deliver good weather
outcomes and lastly, and importantly, allow
members to avail themselves of less busy major
highways.
In the view of the Committee, Bendigo was an
ideal choice for a Federal Rally venue. It is “Old
World” with very impressive architecture funded
largely by gold revenue; it has a plethora of tourist
attractions; it has a “go-ahead” city administration
which is very keen to attract visitors and meld local
events to appeal to locals and visitors alike. In
reference material the city is referred to as the
“Former Queen City of the central goldfields: …
two Cathedrals and an Art Gallery, ... more than
two dozen buildings, most of them handsome
Victoriana, which are listed by the National Trust.”
As an example, our President’s favourite haunt in
Bendigo is the Shamrock Hotel, in its present day
form the third hostelry built on the site; it is a four
storey building, with a double storey verandah,
and an ornate entrance hall tiled in the 19th
century style that maintains the aura of the old
world.
The city’s name comes via that of an English prize
fighter, Abednego William Thompson. A sheep
herder at neighbouring Ravenswood Station was
nicknamed for the pugilist and the first name
became corrupted over years of use and the area
became known as Bendigo Creek.

Weeroona, and also near the terminus of the
“Talking Tram”. The centre point of this cluster of
attractions was the Julie-Anna Comfort Inn which
boasts a very attractive aspect, no stairs, and a
spacious triangular, fully enclosed courtyard which
lent itself very well to our Welcome Dinner held on
Friday evening March 1st
.
All of the Rally guests arrived in good time in
Bendigo without incident, excepting first time
attendees Lex & Ruth Marshall of Bega, NSW, who
had to cover the ground between Holbrook and
Bega twice as their late series, ex-Ireland (2012),
Star Sapphire suffered a serious cooling system
malfunction, which is still under repair at the time
of writing.
The evening was fine and warm, and adding to the
ambience of the evening was a special welcome to
the Armstrong Siddeley Car Club by the Mayor of
the City of Greater Bendigo, Councillor Lisa Ruffell,
who attended pre-dinner drinks, the welcome, and
dinner, and also stayed to chat with various
member groups well past the time she and her
husband Martin were due to depart. Also
attending this gathering from the City of Greater
Bendigo were two members from the Major
Events Unit, Manager Terry Karamaloudis and
Communications Team Leader, Claudette Earl. In
brilliant afternoon sunshine Lisa Ruffell delivered
her welcome, extolling the attractions of Bendigo,
and sharing with us the vision for the on-going
development of the region, and also firmly making
the point of the importance of visitors to the city.
All in attendance were certainly made to feel
welcome.
Responding on behalf of the Club was president
Tony Carter, who with his background in Local
Government and government instrumentalities,
duly acknowledged the kind remarks, and made
several presentations, amongst which were a
bottle of wine for Martin Ruffell, a New England
local government scarf and a specially mounted
Pre-War Sphinx replica radiator cap mascot,
engraved to suitably record the event, both of
these items a gift from the Club to Councillor Lisa
Ruffell.
Dinner was quickly served and following the first
phase of re-acquaintances and catch-ups the
travellers retired to polish cars and achieve some
needed rest, in readiness for the Concours
d’Elegance to be held on Saturday morning.
Bright and early on Saturday morning the various
appointed helpers assumed their tasks, marshals at

entrance to the Hargreaves Mall where the City
had arranged for the Club to hold its Concours. As
a credit to every driver, marshal and official
involved, the cavalcade of cars arrived on time, in
chassis number order, in what seemed to be an
effortless fashion, making their way to the
allocated parking where marshals became judges,
and the townspeople of Bendigo acquainted, or re-
acquainted, themselves with the Armstrong
Siddeley marque.
Possibly prompted by radio, 1071AM, and
newsprint media, courtesy of the Bendigo
Advertiser and the Bendigo Weekly, a number of
Bendigo residents turned out to visit us in the
Hargreaves Mall, swap some stories and admire
the cars, the oldest being John Graham’s 1925
14hp Mendip roadster, and the “youngest” being
John & Annie Link’s Star Sapphire, which was
manufactured amongst the last sixty-five Star
Sapphires made at Parkside.
While the judges, led by Chief Judge Colin Hallam,
did their work the other club members visited
nearby coffee shops, and other shops in and
around the spacious pedestrian mall. The mall
layout lent itself very well to the display of fine
cars, with an open central area containing several
rows of angle-parked Armstrong Siddeleys and a
clutch of Sapphires filling spaces back towards the
Mitchell Street entry point.
Amongst the cars that have not been a part of a
Federal rally for some years,
and in one case if ever, were:
Neil Grierson & Margaret Buck’s
16hp Typhoon, rescued in 2011
from an open shed and
possibly a sad end in Tocumwal,
NSW, has been re-roofed,
significantly re-upholstered and
given a thorough mechanical,
electrical, and bodywork
refurbishment.
Greg Lee’s Station Coupe –
possibly never displayed at a Federal Rally; Greg
acquired this car several years ago from Graham &
Paddy Hutchinson, and has done significant work
on the transmission and general appearance.
Jenny Marshall’s MkII Limousine - this car has had
major work done on its interior, body, paintwork
and brightwork. In its previous state it was black
over gold with a London Tan interior; it is now dark
navy blue over grey, with a lighter coloured leather
interior.

It is great to see the standard of cars
continually improving and more cars being
added to the road going collection owned by
members of the Club. Little by little the
number of road going cars are steadily
growing and at the same time moving toward
scores well over 800 out of 1,000.
Some of the classes in the Concours were very
closely contested; full results by section
appear elsewhere in this issue.
Our lunch providers were the Bendigo Lions
Club, who had set up their purpose built BBQ
trailer on the nearby banks of Lake Weeroona
opposite the Rally Headquarters, and they
delivered a delicious picnic-style lunch in the
very pleasant and sunlit surroundings.
Following the relaxing lunch, especially for the
hard-working judging team, the AGM
commenced across the road in the “Ridge
Room” of Rally HQ, which gave way to a lively
EGM and Rally Auction. Reports of both the
Annual General Meeting and Extraordinary
General meeting will appear elsewhere in the
Southern Sphinx.
Members please note – The very
comprehensive Annual Report for 2012 is now
available on the Members’ Only section of the
Club Website. Please read this when you have
time - it gives an insight into the Clubs’
progress and future direction. The Annual
Report runs to 36 pages and contains fourteen
separate activity reports.
Following the two meetings, the floor gave
way to the Rally Auction conducted by our
very entertaining resident Auctioneer, Robert
Penn Bradly. In short order he placed more
than 92 articles on the ‘block’ which ranged
from new parts through clothing and
memorabilia. Penn had several helpers
keeping tabs on the lot and distribution flow,
enabling the quick throughput that is
necessary given the volume of the offering.
Many of the items were sold at very attractive
prices; the Victorian Branch stocks of various
apparel lines are now all but exhausted.
As the sun set in the clear Western sky, the
Rally group made its way to the St Andrews
Church Hall, which had been set up for a
Dinner Dance by a dedicated group of Branch
members, positioning ten tables plus serving
tables in accordance with Rally Organiser John
Purcell’s carefully thought-out floor plan.

In line with the ambience of the town, our cars
and the hall the night was full of old world
entertainment:
The main band was the Gay Charmers Old Time
Band, who have been in operation for the past 54
years. This group is led by Stuart Simms, and their
caller is Carol Rowe.
The back-up act was Pauline Tonkin on violin and
Michael Cansdale on grand piano, leading the
group in a sing-along which included Botany Bay,
Danny Boy, Click go the Shears, and Waltzing
Matilda. Leading us in song were John Link, Lex &
Ruth Marshall and Sir Robert Woods.
Adding to the evening’s fellowship was the co-
incidence of Lex and Ruth Marshalls’ Golden
Anniversary which fell on Saturday March 2nd
.
They were duly recognised by the singing of
“They are Jolly Good Fellows” and being given a
1930’s motoring encyclopaedia and box of
chocolates. To record the occasion Lex passed the
book around, asking everybody present to sign it,
which leaves us wondering, will it ever be used in
the workshop, or will it be kept as a memento of
their special event ?
To assist with balancing the books, the first of
two Rally raffles was run during the Dinner
Dance. Strong support was received from the
members present; all three prizes were offered as
winners choice, and the winners were: First –
Andrew Clearwater (ACT) – the Bruce Lindsay
book, The Sphinx with the Heart of a Lion. Second
– Colin Hallam – A unique necklace made by Lori
Cameron. Third – Rocky O’Brien - Bendigo Visitor
Centre $50.00 voucher, a gift from the City of
Greater Bendigo.
The evening closed near midnight, with the same
group of helpers putting the hall back to its
original condition with the help of the staff from
the Julie-Anna.
Sunday, March 3rd
, dawned bright and clear, with
the hint of early morning chill that precedes a fine
day. The Rally group assembled on time and
travelled south to our steam train tour starting
point, aboard the tourist attraction the Victorian
Goldfields Railway, which runs between Maldon
& Castlemaine, both former goldfields towns.
Maldon, along with Beechworth in North Eastern
Victoria, are the two “notable towns”. Maldon
has been named by the National Trust as being
the best preserved town from the gold mining era
in Australia. Unfortunately our tight schedule did
not allow for several hours exploring Maldon. A
future venue of interest ?

The Railway Station at Maldon provided a period
stone building backdrop to the impressive line-
up of cars, and once parked the Rally group
waited patiently while local engineers
attempted to sort out a technical problem with
the steam locomotive. According to ASCC steam
enthusiast Robin Gibb, the problem was
symptomatic of blocked injectors, a common
issue caused by rust flakes dislodging
themselves from inside the locomotive’s boiler,
and finding their way into the fine steam holes
in the injectors. We had to settle for the back-up
diesel locomotive which was duly hooked to the
train and headed for Castlemaine, forty-five
minutes distant.
On arrival, lunch was taken at the Cumberland
Hotel from 12:30 onwards, and then members
were free to look around this historic town,
which features an art gallery and museum,
restorer’s shed full of period domestic fittings,
an antique complex and historic homestead.
At 3:45pm the return journey commenced,
retracing our rail trip to Maldon and from there
driving back to Bendigo on the Maryborough
Road.
The Presentation Dinner opened with a different
style of historic address from local Bendigo
Weekly columnist and authority on the district,
Mr James Lerk. James took the dinner group
down “memory lane” with a series of posters
and prints of the early goldrush era, with such
diverse subjects as the personalities, equipment,
place names and living conditions of that very
tough bygone era.
Sunday night is the traditional evening for
recognition of people’s efforts in car restoration,
maintaining and improving their car’s
appearance and also some personal awards for
travel, endurance and contribution over the past
year. In addition to these long standing awards,
a new President’s award has been added to the
personal recognition classification. These may
be multiple awards, the inaugural winners
being:
Hugh McMinn – For his service as Editor of the
Southern Sphinx over the years since John Day
retired from the role in 2005. John Purcell – For
his work in sorting, packing and posting each
issue of the Southern Sphinx and its enclosures.
Peter Hills – For the research and development
of the Australian Club Website, and allowing
Club access to his considerable resource library.

The venue for the Sunday night Presentation
Dinner was Quill’s Restaurant, a short walk along
Napier Street from the Julie-Anna; the three
course meal was an alternate drop a’la carte with
choices of vegetable or pork entree, fish or lamb
mains, and sticky date pudding or strawberry
cheesecake for dessert.
2013 ushered in a new set of wall-mounted
trophies, in place of the large silver plated cups
which have adorned mantelpieces and study
shelves for the past 46 years. The two pre-1941
awards, Vintage & Pre-War, are a shield/scroll
style of wall hanging. All of the Post-War saloon/
coupe awards are the same style shield type with
rectangular plates.
John Colebrook took the 16/18hp trophy with his
resplendent and split trimmed (as per original)
16hp Lancaster, which has leather in the front
seat and West of England cloth in the rear.
Greg Lee took out the Utility/Station Coupe
trophy with his yellow/red 18hp Station Coupe.
Back in the winner’s circle after absences of many
years were Jenny Marshall with her Sapphire
Limousine, and John Link with his ex-Penn Bradly
late series Star Sapphire.
Winning back to back was the resplendent two-
tone grey MkI Sapphire 346 of Graham and
Pauline Carson, taking out Best MkI Sapphire, the
Ron Beer Memorial Trophy for mechanical
excellence, and the Best Car Overall, with a total
of 920.7/1000.
The winners and choices for the second and last
raffle were: First – Alan Purss (NSW) – the Bruce
Lindsay book, The Sphinx with the Heart of a Lion,
Second – David Savill (UK) – the second
manufactured necklace, Third – Alison Clearwater
(ACT) - Bendigo Visitor Centre $50.00 voucher.
President Tony Carter delivered his final address
for the 2013 Rally reflecting on the enjoyment at
Bendigo, and drawing the attention of Rally
guests to the 2014 event to be hosted by the New
South Wales Branch, with Rally HQ to be the

the city, past the well known and well
preserved Princess Alexandra Fountain,
which has graced the centre of Bendigo for
more than eleven decades. Taking the mine
tour down to the second underground level
serves to highlight the extent and the
position of the gold-bearing quartz seams
that run under the City of Bendigo; the
mine area in full production dealt with
extraction of the gold bearing rock,
processing the material to extract the gold
using a cam-actuated battery and then
chemical separation of the smaller particles
of gold using mercury. It was explained that
the incidence of gold nuggets in relatively
shallow locations are a product of volcanic
activity over thousands of years.
After the two mine groups re-boarded the
tram, we were taken back to the Julie-Anna
for the short drive to Bendigo Pottery, a
self-contained manufacturing site for all
manner of kiln fired products made from
various grades of clay. This site has been in
operation since 1858 and is still a self-
contained commercial enterprise with a
strong tourism flavour. Again the group
was halved to enable two lunch sittings and
two tours of this extensive facility which
also accommodates an artists’ colony. The
proprietors of Bendigo Pottery gave the
Club a concession encouraging us to park
the available Armstrong Siddeleys on the
grass verge which is visible from the nearby
Midland Highway. In mid afternoon
members were free to relax, explore
Bendigo or visit nearby points of interest.
The Tour Group destined for Tasmania the
next morning had a briefing in the
courtyard of the Julie-Anna before an early
night.
The Tuesday morning Farewell Breakfast
took place at Quill’s Restaurant from 08:00,
and with that the Rally closed and a
number of participants set about finding
their way home, following the good-byes.
28 hardy souls headed down the Calder
Freeway for Port Melbourne, to board the
“Spirit of Tasmania” that evening.
So another Rally ends. We now look
forward to and prepare for “Hunter Valley
2014”.

Good taste in Public Service . . .
Hi Hugh,
This was scanned from “The Children’s Highway Code”, which was issued by the “Australian Road Safety
Council”. There is no date on the publication, only a reference number (M35.T.500M.31). It was printed by
“Herald Gravure Pty Ltd”. It seems they existed in Melbourne. I did a search on the “National Archives” web
page. The publication is listed there (bar code 10966069) and was current in the early 50’s, if I read it
correctly. Anyhow, the scanned image is clearly of a Whitley. There are another 19 vehicles used in the
publication, but none of them are a recognisable brand. They are only “stylised” vehicle sketches. So, clearly
somebody had the good taste to include an Armstrong Siddeley. Let’s assume it was the public servant in
charge of the project.

TECHNICAL : D O E S Y O U R D I S T R I B U T O R
D I S T R I B U T E N I C E L Y ?
We had a fantastic time at one of the best ASCC rallies in Bendigo and then we went on the Club's Tasmania
Tour; it was also a fantastic event and we covered around 3,000km during the fortnight. This was only
possible thanks to the loan of a sound distributor cap; let me tell you the story as it may well help others.
A distributor cap can develop hair-line cracks which are usually not at all obvious. These cracks mostly occur
after a mechanic or owner has handled the cap and HT wires carelessly or the assembly has been dropped on to the
concrete floor. The other cause is a badly worn distributor where the rotor is not held properly in the centre of the
distributor head and as it rotates it either scrapes on the cap's contacts as it turns or hits a contact. They are almost
unknown to fail provided that all is kept in order.
Ever since I have had my current A/S Star (second time of ownership) it has had a slight miss at idle or just above
idle speed, but once on the road it behaved splendidly. For several years and over a lot of distance covered, I have
hunted for the reason for the problem. I changed spark plug leads, did night time surveillance on the metal tubes
that go down to the cylinder head that take the spark to the spark plug to establish if there were any leaks from the
spark plug's shroud on to the metal tube (a rare occurrence). I fitted new distributor points and condenser and
knowing the weakness of old coils I also replaced the coil with a new heavy duty Bosch type GT40 coil. I
also re-torqued the cylinder head and did compression readings, which were all at the Star's 150PSI requirement,
reset the tappets etc. The car always went so well when touring, I just thought that there was nothing more I
could do.
We set out for our trip to Bendigo, being a comfortable morning trip of some 600km, and just near Bendigo we
stopped for a tea break; when I went to start the engine it was quite cranky but reluctantly fired up and on we went
to our motel in Bendigo. After unloading our things I went to start the car again and not only would it not even
think about starting the engine seemed to want to turn over backwards. On the Rally was a stalwart of the ASCC,
and as he is a highly trained and qualified motor technician, I showed him what the Star was doing and instantly he
stated that I had a cracked distributor cap - how right he was ! Another Club member kindly offered to lend me a
spare cap he was carrying; this was also kindly fitted. The car started instantly upon completion of the fitting of
the substitute distributor cap; all then was well and the miss had evaporated, and into the garbage went the old
distributor cap.
The car ran superbly and even at an ambient temperature of 39°C in hilly terrain its running temperature stayed
on "normal"; this proved that the distributor had the proper amount of advance. Unfortunately, these days it
is not appropriate to set the distributor’s advance setting as per the ASM books as modern petrol is quite different
from the type used at the time the car was built. All an owner can do is set it by trial and error. If the car has a
sparkling performance, is very smooth and neither pings nor overheats on a very hot day, your setting is in all
probability close to its optimum.
A careful inspection of the faulty distributor cap had showed that it had been repaired some years ago, with
probably araldite glue, which I had not noticed before. The very hot day of our travel probably weakened the
araldite and the crack travelled further, rendering the car in operative. In around 1.5 million Armstrong Siddeley
miles I have never had this problem. I will in future carry a spare distributor cap, clearly a worthwhile spare part
to carry.
All this goes to show that you are never too old to learn something new. I must thank these ASCC members for all
they did. My Star now has a new distributor cap and runs like a new car !

I am writing to thank all those members of the ASCC who have sent me their kind
wishes and caring support during Garth’s illness and at Garth’s death. It has meant
a lot to me and I know it would also have meant a great deal to Garth to know that
we have been in your thoughts. Thank you to all who attended the funeral and helped us to celebrate his
very productive and happy life. Special thanks go to those who went to such effort to bring along their
Armstrong Siddeleys … it was a fitting tribute and he would have been very proud !
Gratefully,

ALL ABOUT TIN . . . Tin is the layman's general term for what the expert would call "metal". There are many different kinds of
"tin".
BRASS is a very useful sort of tin. It is mined in Yorkshire, and is said to occur wherever there is muck.
Out of brass we make monkeys, knobs and money.
NICKEL is the sort of tin used for making American money.
LEAD is a very heavy sort of tin, used mainly for making the middle of pencils and poisonous paint for
children's toys. It is also used for roofing churches which last for hundreds of years because the heavy lead
stops them blowing away.
STEEL is what people do to the lead on church roofs.
ALUMINIUM is a very light sort of tin, often used for supporting chimneys. Specially shaped hooks called
aerials anchor the chimney to the sky and stop it blowing away. They also attract lightning which is made
from electricity, which is what makes televisions work.
WIRE is a very thin sort of tin. It is often used for making fences because it is so thin you can see right
through it.
MERCURY is a very runny sort of tin, often confused with water. It has the remarkable property of getting
longer when it gets hot and is thus ideal for making thermometers.
IRON is a very flat sort of tin, used for taking small creases out of shirts and for putting big ones in.
Another sort of iron can be used for gluing bits of wire together.
RUST is a very crumbly sort of tin, ideal for making motor cars.
CHROME is a very shiny sort of tin, used for holding rust together.
COPPER is a dark blue variety of tin, used as an inert filler for Panda cars [Police cars –Ed] and football
stadiums.
TUNGSTEN, SODIUM and STRONTIUM are light sorts of tin. Tungsten glows from bulbs, sodium glows
on long stalks at the side of the road. Strontium is not as light as sodium or tungsten and only glows
feebly in the dark. Fitted to a wristwatch it enables you to tell what time the lights went out.
BARIUM is an edible sort of tin, fed only to hospital patients suffering from transparency.
GOLD is a very soft sort of tin, much too soft to be of any use.
MAGNET is a very attractive sort of tin, which always points North. This special property makes it ideal for
propelling ships.
SILVER paper is an alloy of tin and cardboard, widely used in the packaging industry.
ZINC is a sort of tin used for washing Potz and Panz.
TITANIUM is a very strong sort of tin used to reinforce ladies’ undergarments.
Spotted !
Great to see it - my annual "fix" on A/S cars is very thin on the ground, nowadays !
Best Wishes,
Peter CauntPeter CauntPeter CauntPeter Caunt
Dear Hugh,
Saw this 346 Mk 2 at Maitland Steamfest car show, Sunday 14th April. It seems in good nick. I do not recall seeing this car before.
