Even for a non-mechanical mind, I found the content of the February meeting fascinating. I want to give my thanks to Dan Butler and

Konrad DeLong from BG Products for their fine presentation. Chuck’s wrap-up of the meeting on page 7 says it all! I can’t write this without mentioning some very important statements that Dan and Konrad made that made a big impression on me. Several times during their presentation, when talking about shops telling their customers about the possible concerns of a GDI system, they

made statements like, “We have to do a better job of taking care of our customers,” “Concern for your customer,” and “What are you doing for your customer to make sure they don’t face these issues?” I can tell you from a customer’s viewpoint, which is where I come from, these types of statements were comforting to hear. Because I don’t know all the issues of the workings of a automobile, I confess that I have often felt like I was being pushed into repairs that might not be needed. These “customer care” statements made me realize that maybe my auto service provider does indeed care for me and

my car and not just trying to up-my-bill. I wish more consumers could have the advantage that I have in hearing the “inside track” of auto repair and understand the desire of many service providers to do just that...provide real service. Thanks ASA for this valuable insight!

But I do not want to leave unreported was the heartfelt departure that the ASA gave to Nancy Adkins as she steps down from many years of service as the ASA Administrator. Several past-presidents and other board members were on hand to give Nancy some words of thanks and shower her with a number of departing gifts, including a cake which we all shard for dessert. Thanks Nancy for your service.

Well, the March meeting is more up my alley. We’ll be talking marketing and reaching customers. Now that’s a topic I understand, and I look forward to the program.

As all things these days seem to be going up in price, the ASA dinner is no exception. Please note that the dinner is now $15 for member and $20 for non-members. I hope you are able to join us on March 14.

March 2017

FEBRUARY MEETING RECAP by Chuck Stasny

You don't need to go back to the carburetor days to recognize how fuel control has evolved over the last few years. I remember reading a J.D. Powers

article predicting that 33% of all gasoline engines could be direct injection by 2016. Actually their prediction was low as GDI has grown from less than 3% in 2008 to over 45% and continues to outpace other mileage improving technologies. This month, ASA welcomed Dan Butler and Konrad DeLong from BG Products who discussed Gasoline Direct Injection and the special attention that this technology requires.

German automakers like Volkswagen and BMW were among the first carmakers to adopt direct injection for gasoline engines. Now, Ford, General Motors and Hyundai are at the table with their versions of GDI. Ford calls its GDI system “EcoBoost” which is producing the power of a V8 from its 3.5-liter V6 engine and expected to provide 15 to 20 percent better fuel economy.

The stoichiometric air-fuel ratio for gasoline is 14.7:1 by weight (mass), but ultra-lean mode can involve ratios as high as 65:1. These mixtures are much leaner than in a conventional engine and reduce fuel consumption considerably. An unfortunate downside is that carbon deposits build up on the intake valves and can lead to drivability issues and major repair costs.

It seems there is little argument as to cause of the growing carbon deposits. The practice of injecting directly into the combustion chamber eliminates fuel washing the back side of the intake valves. Now oil laden PVC gases are allowed to plate the back side of the valves and continue to build until drivability issues and poor fuel economy begin. Additional carbon is added when EGR technology is used.

Some manufacturers are experimenting with additional injector nozzles that spray fuel into the intake to provide a cleaning effect but largely, shop owners must emphasize the importance of regular fuel injection services to keep the deposits at bay. Left alone, an expensive mechanical cleaning could be required to restore drivability and fuel economy.

One of the more important points of the BG presentation from Dan and Konrad was that all oils are not created equal when it comes to DI engines. If you recall from the last oil presentations from presenters Victoria Johnson and Cody Evans from JAM and Paul Travis with Hubert Glass Oil, they all commented about the continued evolution of oil quality to fight situations that did not exist in the past. One of those would be the evaporation of the oil in high temperature conditions such as those that occur in GDI engine management. As the more volatile oil components evaporate the oil begins to thicken which affects variable valve timing. More important, the volatile portion of the oil is free to deposit on intake valve components.

Motor oil with a low volatility rating (its “NOACK” number, which is based on the ASTM D5800 lab test) is best for GDI engines because it will reduce oil consumption and help keep the PCV system and intake

valves clean. Most recent European oil specifications call for a low NOACK rating (less than 15%). You can see from the illustration to the left that NOACK rating can vary even if they meet the same API SN and ILSAC GF-4 specifications. More info can be found at PQIA.com.

Few vehicle owners understand what steps are necessary to maintain their GDI engines. The carbon build up is oil based as opposed to fuel based. Longer oil change intervals exaggerate stuck piston rings which increases blow by which then escalates oil consumption. Cylinder misfires

can be a result of large chunks of carbon being lodged between valve and seat.

Not surprising, Dan and Konrad were prepared to show how BG's research and resulting products have advanced toward reducing harmful deposits and keep the customer's vehicle in optimum running condition. The BG Performance Oil Change and DI fuel service will keep your customer's vehicle operating at peak performance.

Many thanks to Dan Butler and Konrad DeLong from BG Products for the great presentation and for supporting our organization by sponsoring our February monthly meeting.
