In 1989, I arrived at AS220 as a volunteer accountant in a suit and tie. Bert looked at me and thought: "How do I connect with this guy?" We didn't dress the same or look alike. Bert asked me: "Do you perform? Do you play a musical instrument? Do you make art?" I didn't, but we bonded over a mutual love of sports. Still, he told me "Some day, I'm going to get you on stage."

That happened on March 24, 2014 when I opened our community meeting, "BUILDING AS220: Past. Present. Future.", at Trinity Repertory Company. We invited you, our community, to participate in this special event -- and you rose to the occasion. Every seat in the Chace Theater was filled, with more standing in the aisles. BUILDING AS220 is a call for participation. Community participation has been vital to our success. In the past year alone, AS220 hosted the 17th season of Action Speaks, Rhode Island's national live forum radio show, in which every show in the month-long program was standing room only. This summer, 5,000 of you packed Empire Street on August 10th for Foo Fest 2013. And Fab Academy 2014 at AS220 hosted an international group of participants, including students from Kazakhstan and South Africa. Your participation is why AS220 matters.

Thank you for participating. Let's continue BUILDING AS220 together.

Sean Daly

As we celebrate 30 years and all of the people who've participated and contributed to the success of AS220, we are already looking to the future. At the time of this report, AS220 is in negotiations for a new building that will accommodate an expansion of our Industries plus additional affordable live / work studios for artists. We're solidifying and growing our consultancy program, Practice // Practice, which has taken me around the country and the world this past year. We're also enhancing our approach to programming to ensure that AS220 is as accessible to you as possible. All of these steps ensure the continued success of AS220 over the next 30 years, and beyond.

Thank you for your participation in the past, present, and future of AS220.

2015 marks thirty years of existence for AS220. We've come a long way from our original rented space on the third floor of the Providence Performing Arts Center. Throughout our growth, our commitment to our original mission has not changed: to provide an unjuried, uncensored, and all-ages forum in which any Rhode Island artist can create, perform, or exhibit their original work.

AS220 believes in individuals achieving self-sustainability and independence through art and creativity. We rent space to 5 local commercial tenants, and 2 non-profits, and offer 48 affordable live/work studios, creating an opportunity for artists and businesses alike to thrive in the heart of Rhode Island’s capitol city.

In 2013-14, AS220 Youth extended these opportunities to young people from underserved neighborhoods in Providence and the surrounding communities, with its massively popular summer employment program. Youth gained real-world employment skills in the areas of apparel design, sound engineering, video and photography, and mural design and execution.

AS220 offers an unjuried, uncensored, and all-ages environment for any Rhode Island artist to create, perform, and exhibit their original work. We provide affordable access to spaces where individuals can take risks and grow; education, tools, healthy food, affordable residential and work studios, and community.

In 2013-2014, AS220 partnered with RHD-RI, an arts therapy program serving adults with developmental disabilities, giving clients access to the AS220 Industries and space to create and commune at our main stage and gallery on Empire Street.

AS220 has won numerous historical preservation awards for our three buildings and invested $25 million in downtown Providence, but what really counts is participating in bringing community and vibrancy to our neighborhood.

This past year, AS220 launched the “I’m with the Band” program - where Brown University pays for students to attend live programming at AS220, enabling them to explore Providence’s creative vibrancy and also see AS220 as a home base for both attending and presenting shows. 2014 also saw Digital City, or DC206, arrive as a tenant in the Mercantile Block. A co-working space for freelancers and artists working in digital media, DC206 drew new members of Providence’s creative community to our campus and the downtown.

"It's amazing to live in this city and be in these buildings surrounded by artists. The feeling that I get being here is enough to push me to try new things and follow through on them. I don't know if I would've discovered what I'm doing now, if I hadn't moved here." - Steve Duque, artist, AS220 resident

“The AS220 Fab Lab has allowed us as designers to test, explore, and create designs that ultimately jump started our jewelry business DUO | DUET.
