ingapore’s Marina Bay circuit has proved itself to be a difficult place to master in its relatively short seven-year history and this is unlikely to change this weekend.

If anything there are perhaps even more question marks surrounding the outcome of this year’s event, with the FIA introducing new rules regarding use of pit to car radio and pit boards.

In the lead up to this weekend’s race, the sport’s governing body gave the green light to implement new rules, which will see the use of radio transmissions to drivers scaled back to a minimum, in a bid to make the drivers work harder.

Since the introduction of the complex hybrid V6 power units, teams have been relying heavily on radio communications in order to instruct their drivers on how best to drive the car, save fuel, change engine settings and extract the most out of their current situation.

From now on the FIA states the driver must drive unaided without the use of any information transmitted from the team relating to the

performance of the car. Coded messages are also banned and the FIA will

enforce the new regulation rigorously monitoring all radio traffic throughout this weekend’s Singapore Grand Prix.

This stance has also be transferred to the use of pit boards.

While the new regulation is unlikely to change the natural order of the grid, it could certainly shake up pack during the race, testing the driver’s skill and knowledge of their cars to the limit.

It also throws another fascinating variable into the already simmering title battle between Mercedes’ Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton.

Communication Breakdown: Radio ban to hand F1 back to the driversT

he airwaves will have a slightly different sound at Marina Bay this weekend as the paddock gets to grips with the FIA’s new

ban on radio transmissions aimed to improve driver performance.

Following a meeting of Formula 1’s strategy group, the previously ungoverned area of pit to car radio transmissions has undergone a complete makeover.

The reason for this latest change to F1’s already complex rulebook is simple in the eye of the FIA, with the sports governing body implementing the changes in order to make the drivers work harder.

As a result, from this weekend’s Singapore Grand Prix, all radio messages aimed at improving a driver’s performance will be banned.

Coded messages have also been outlawed with the regulation also extending to displaying similar messages via the pit board.

“The driver must drive the car alone and

unaided.“Therefore, no radio conversation from

pit to driver may include any information that is related to the performance of the car or driver,” read a statement from the FIA.

The regulations will significantly reduce the amount of radio traffic flying around during a race weekend, while also testing drivers to the limit as they rely on their own ability and feel to correctly assess race situations.

With the introduction of more complex hybrid power unit systems this year, teams have been using radio transmissions at a more prolific rate to aid their drivers throughout the race.

Engineers are able to deliver specific race changing information, whether it is an order to help save fuel, increase speed via engine settings or change downforce levels.

To some extent this has taken some of the skill away from the driver, which has been addressed by these rules.

To put it simply, teams will still be able to communicate with their drivers but can only inform them of specific information, e.g lap times, gaps to competitors, race strategy and of course any safety messages.

Any performance adjustments to the car will be conducted under the drivers own free will.

The ruling also forbids information to be administered to drivers on the formation lap.

The regulations are designed to give F1 back to the drivers and only time will tell if this has the desired effect.

Meanwhile, the radio clampdown has already been met with mixed reviews.

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff described the new technical directive as a controversial decision asking for further clarification.

“This is a complex and controversial decision which will require a significant effort from the teams to understand how best we can work around it,” said Wolff.

“The directive is not yet fully clear and

there will inevitably be some controversy, so it will need further clarification as to how much the essential on-track procedures will be affected - particularly before the start of the race.”

The FIA has already stated that this directive will be leaving teams no option but to abide by the rules for fear of penalties.

Here is a summary of the types of messages which are deemed acceptable and those now forbidden.

It remains to be seen just how this radio ban will affect this weekend’s Singapore Grand Prix, but it could just provide an added variable to shake up the grid, as drivers scramble to learn the intricacies of their cars.

Classic Team Radio Moments

In recent years radio transmissions have been a valuable aid to the armchair fan keen to understand the vagaries of grand prix strategy.

Not only do these exchanges provide an intriguing window into the mindset of the driver during the race, they have often produced many moments of comedy and immortal quotes that have sparked internet memes and memorabilia.

Round 14 - Singapore Grand Prix I Cover Story

Page 9: SPEEDCAFE.COM’S ULTIMATE GUIDE SINGAPORE GRAND PRIX€¦ · scooped pole position by three tenths from Red Bull’s Racing’s Sebastian Vettel. Nico Rosberg put his Williams third

McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton produced an imperious drive to claim the second ever Singapore Grand Prix.

While Hamilton starred throughout by converting a pole position into his second win of the season, the race was shrouded in controversy following the discovery that the inaugural race 12 months previously had been fixed.

Recently sacked Renault driver Nelson Piquet Jr revealed in the weeks building up to the race that he had been instructed to crash by bosses Flavio Briatore and Pat

Symonds in order to bring out the Safety Car and give then team-mate Fernando Alonso a platform to win the 2008 race.

The FIA issued the Renault F1 team with a two suspended ban. Briatore was suspended from the sport indefinitely while Symonds was issued with a five year ban. The pair left the team just days before the second edition of the Singapore Grand Prix.

Come the race weekend it was Hamilton who set the pace for McLaren as he scooped pole position by three tenths from

Red Bull’s Racing’s Sebastian Vettel. Nico Rosberg put his Williams third on the grid while championship leader Jenson Button could only secure 12th spot.

Hamilton made no mistakes at the start as he swept into the lead where he stayed until the chequered flag.

In the end, the Brit claimed the win by 9.6s from Toyota’s Timo Glock who made the most of a long first stint. Fernando Alonso came home in third ahead of Vettel and Button.

FLASHBACK

This could come under threat following the new regulations, with engineers already predicting a significant reduction in the amount of radio chatter during races.

Here are three vintage messages from the recent past which may be confined to the history books.

Germany 2010: Ferrari engineer Rob Smedley to Felipe MassaRob Smedley: “Fernando is faster than you, do you understand”

The infamous message which forced Massa to give up a potential grand prix win in favor of team-mate Alonso. Under current rules this message is prohibited.

Abu Dhabi 2012: Lotus engineer Simon Rennie to Kimi RaikkonenRennie: “Ok Kimi next car behind you is Alonso, I’ll keep you updated on the gap”Raikkonen: “Just leave me alone I know what I am doing.”Rennie: “Ok Kimi make sure you keep working all of the tyres”

Raikkonen: “Yes yes yes I’m doing it all of the time you don’t have to keep reminding me.”

Likewise, this iconic exchange which has exploded into the consciousness of non motorsport fans would not adhere to the new rules.

Bahrain 2010: Robert Kubica to Renault engineer Kubica: “Someone has left a phone in the cockpit. What should I do just throw it away?” Engineer: “Box this lap, box this lap.”

MARINA BAY STREET CIRCUIT GUIDEStreet Circuit

Whilst there is certainly more room in

which to manoeuvre the car and avoid contact with the walls than in Monaco, drivers are nonetheless running mere centimetres from the barriers in a number of places around the Marina Bay circuit. This has been allayed somewhat following a restructuring of the kerbs - particularly around the reshaped Turn 10 - however there is still very little margin for error.

Track Surface

Sparking - where the plank of the car

makes contact with the tarmac - is a frequent sight around the Singapore circuit. Not only due to the darkness, but the uneven nature of the track surface. Resurfacing work was carried out last year which did improve this - but it nonetheless remains the most extreme circuit of the year in terms of surface ripples. Contact with the ground serves only to upset the car on corner entry, so a compromise must be found for the optimal setup. Maximising the potential of the car around a lap whilst minimising the risk of errors is a tough balance to find - and all the more challenging since the removal of certain suspension tools.

Tyres

The soft and supersoft compounds have

been nominated for this race - a standard allocation for the Marina Bay circuit. As

proven in Monaco, this should not create any issues and a similar scenario to that of last season can therefore be expected.

What is interesting about Singapore is that, when the sun sets, track temperature stabilises at ambient temperature - usually around 30 degrees at this time of year. Although this is not a particularly high figure, tyre overheating is a common occurrence. This is brought about by continuous sets of corners putting high amounts of energy through the rubber, coupled with minimal time spent travelling in a straight line to allow the surface to cool.

Safety Cars Once again, the tight nature of the circuit

increases the likelihood of incidents and also makes it difficult to clear stricken cars away when they do stop on track. As a relatively new venue on the calendar compared to, say, Melbourne, the Singapore marshals are also not quite as experienced in dealing with such scenarios. Although they do a fine job, it can take a little longer for racing to resume here than at comparable circuits. There are also not as many access points as you might find in Monaco, for example. Each of these factors can contribute to lengthy safety car periods and, as a consequence, a race which often runs right up to the two hour limit.

Climate

Since the inaugural Singapore Grand Prix

in 2008, there has not been a single wet

session to date. It has come close to being so on at least once occasion - but has thus far failed to materialise. This is unlikely to change, as the weather profile in Singapore is such that rain tends to arrive during the late afternoon, which does not clash with track running time.

Offset Hours Handling the offset schedule of Singapore

in the most effective manner possible is a topic often discussed - and one that does hold some significance. There are a few schools of thought on this - the first being to tackle the change head on come race day. Then, there’s the more progressive approach - making the adjustment as early as possible and staging it over a few days. Whichever philosophy is adopted, the end result is very much the same in that team members must wake at around lunch time and head home as the sun rises the next day. Although it may seem a simple transition to the outside world, the fact remains that this is fundamentally confusing to the human body - which very much operates on the principles of daylight being the time to remain awake. For everybody involved, maintaining peak performance and avoiding mistakes during hours in which the body is used to resting is not as simple as it may seem.
