WELCOME
Tim Richardson, Chairman
So, after two weather-affected postponements, today’s match is our first
since Boxing Day and we’re still at the half-way point of the season.
Welcome to you all and to our visitors from Tavistock for this important
League Cup last-eight tie.
The postponements against Holsworthy and St Dennis, though
disappointing, were inevitable. The pitch was saturated leading up to the
day of each of these matches, with still lots more rain to come.
Before that, I was particularly pleased with the turn-out on Boxing Day,
with 289 people enjoying the fresh air and most of them enjoying the
match as well! I hope that a fair proportion of those who came, perhaps
for the first time in a while, will return for our future matches, especially
after seeing such a great display from the team.
I’m told that a number of people who’ve recently moved to the area are
now committed Mousehole AFC supporters – in fact I hear that someone
said they are now ‘hooked’!
If the first half of our season is anything to go by, the second half should
be quite something! I must pay the highest possible tribute to Wayne, the
players and the management team. They have cultivated an attractive
style of play, a combative attitude and a togetherness – all of which I’m
sure you’ll agree is a real joy to watch.
Best wishes to you all for 2016, Tim

QUICK QUOTES FROM QUINNY
News and views from player-manager Wayne Quinn
Welcome to our exciting challenge against Tavistock, who are 16 places above us in the SWPL pyramid. Cup games like this help us establish how
good we are against higher-division opponents. This season we’ve already beaten one Premier Division side, Newquay, but Tavistock are among the front-runners, so today will be interesting, to say the least. And you can
say the same again for the match against Bodmin Town!
Three weeks ago, it was an excellent Boxing Day for us, and I hope for you too. We put in a great team performance and did exactly what we needed
to do. With great respect to Penzance, we could have won by more.
People talk about all the goals we score, and of course the scorers - but
don’t forget who’s dominating the midfield behind them and helping out those mean so-and-so’s in defence (clean sheets for the last 5 games!).
I’d also like to give a big positive mention to our squad as a whole. It’s
great to have on board players who don’t get a start every week, but keep themselves ready to slot in and do a very capable job when called upon.
As I said last time, the squad is bigger and stronger than two years ago. We will certainly need it to cope with injuries, illness, suspensions and
unavailability, plus a challenging schedule of matches. We play Penryn, Argyle, Sticker and St Dennis at home, and St Dennis again away, each of which is a proverbial “six pointer”. Plus at least two Cup games against
Premier Division teams, and a seriously difficult end to the season, with six games in two weeks, including four away, and two in three days at home.
Thanks for your support in 2015 – we’ll need it in 2016!
Quinny.

BOXING DAY RECORDS
Attendance
The number of spectators at our last match - the Boxing Day morning ‘local derby’ against Penzance at Trungle Parc - was 289, which…….
was the biggest home attendance of the season, more than three times bigger than our previous highest of 85 against Liskeard Athletic
improved our average home attendance this season from 78 to 108, the second highest in the West Division after Holsworthy with 109, and 50% higher than the West Division’s overall average of 65
easily overtook the previous highest league attendance in the West Division this season, the 226 for Holsworthy v Plymouth Argyle
beat all the Premier Division derbies, including Falmouth v Helston (205), except for St Blazey v St Austell (322) and Godolphin Atlantic v Newquay (324).
Goals
Full-back Billy Curtis’ goal to make it 6-0 was his first of the season.
It was also the 70th league goal scored by the team this half-season, equalling the previous highest for a WHOLE season (2014/15) since joining the SWP League in 2007. Bradley Wills’ penalty for 7-0 then made it a record-breaking 71, with 16 League matches still to play.
The all-time record beckons! Mousehole’s three previous highest-scoring seasons in the Cornwall Combination League were 93 (1987/88), 91 (1989/90) and 84 (2006/07), all with more teams in the Division than now.
A different milestone is also within reach: in all games this season, both league and cups, Mousehole have scored 97 goals. The question is: who will score the 100th, and when?
JANUARY IN HISTORY
45 years ago (2nd January 1971): Ibrox Park, Glasgow – 66 football fans died and 200 were injured in a crush on an exit stairway near the end of a Rangers-Celtic game.
77 years ago (2nd January 1939): On this day, the record highest gate for a league match in the UK was 118,567, also at Ibrox for Rangers v Celtic.
28 years ago (2nd January 1988): Loic Remy (below, left) currently at Chelsea, and a French international, was born.
15 years ago (12th January 2001): Lazio club coach Sven Goran Eriksson (above, centre) became England football manager, his first international post. He took over from Kevin Keegan (above, right) with England bottom of their World Cup qualifying group. By the end of the qualifying campaign, England were top of their group and went on to reach the 2002 World Cup quarter-finals in Japan. They lost 2-1 to Brazil with that much-discussed goal by Ronaldinho.
47 years ago (in January 1969): Non-football note (well, very football-related as it turned out!): Australian tycoon Rupert Murdoch took over the News of the World newspaper group, his first foothold in Fleet Street and the start of his major control and influence in British media.

MORE ABOUT SEAGULLS
Alfred Hitchcock’s Gulls
British film director Alfred Hitchcock’s 1963 film The Birds portrayed American herring gulls as the enemy of humans. The plot isn’t pure fantasy. European herring gulls have been known to attack humans, usually to protect their young or their territory. At some airports, trained falcons are used to keep seagulls away.
In SWP Division 1 West, the Seagulls are on top, and there are no other teams nicknamed The Falcons.
If you want to see gulls on the attack, see “The Birds Final Attack Sequence with Full Symphonic Score” on YouTube (3 minutes).
Eric Cantona’s Seagulls
"When the seagulls follow the trawler, it's because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea”.
Manchester United’s Eric Cantona, complaining about media interest after he had
done something very newsworthy to a Crystal Palace supporter in 1995

THE BOXING DAY “LOCAL DERBY” v. PENZANCE
It now seems so long ago! On the morning: anticipation, expectation, bright and breezy. Lots of people in cheerful chatty mood, savouring the fresh air as well as the festive spirit in the clubhouse.
With the strong wind in our favour we needed a good first-half cushion (commonly known as ‘goals’). Three was okay, but once we got going it could have been any number. Forgetting the season of goodwill, we pressed our visitors in their own half, taking advantage of their self-inflicted as well as wind-assisted errors.
In the second half, we played even better facing the south-westerly, keeping the ball on the ground to neutralise the effects of the wind, and showing a blatant lack of sympathy for our opponents’ plight.
Billy Curtis
A collector’s item: Billy upfield from left-back arrows in a goal from 20 yards.
Steve Burt
A rarity: a Burtie goal, his second of the season, both with his left foot.

NOTES ABOUT TAVISTOCK AFC: “THE LAMBS”
Formed in September 1888, the club played in the Devon League at Tavistock Grammar School playing fields. In their second season they were the first winners of the Devon Senior Cup, and in 1900–01 won the Devon League title.
The club achieved success in the Devon League, Senior Cup and Bedford Cup during the 1920s, but ceased playing in 1932 because of debt. They started again in 1937, and in 1939 amalgamated with three other local teams, Tavistock Comrades, Bannawell Blues United and Tavistock West End, changing from salmon pink shirts with chocolate collars and cuffs, to red and black stripes. More recently, the shirts have changed to white with red and black trim.
In 1947 Club President Herbert Thomas Langsford purchased Tavistock’s current home Langsford Park. The club joined the Plymouth Combination League First Division, winning it in 1950/51. They joined the South Western League in 1952, and, apart from an 8-season gap spent in local football, remained members until 2007 when they joined the newly formed South West Peninsula League Premier Division. In their first six seasons they were 10th, 6th, 5th, 13th, 10th and 10th, but in 2013/14 they finished bottom with 2 wins and 107 goals conceded. In the first season after relegation, they won the Division 1 East title, finishing above our League Cup 2nd Round victims Appledore on goal difference.
Tavistock entered the FA Cup throughout the 1950s and again since 2006/07, reaching the 3rd qualifying round in 1954/55 and the 1st QR in 2011/12. They have entered the FA Vase yearly since 2004/05, reaching the last 32 in their second year, and the 2nd round in 2009/10 and 2013/14. In other cups, they have won the Devon Senior Cup four times; the South Western League Challenge Cup, Victory Cup and Throgmorton Cup once each; and Bedford Cup on 11 occasions.
In the League they currently lie 4th, with 11 wins, 5 draws and 6 defeats, 44 goals-for and 28-against. Jack Crago is their chief goal scorer with 15. They haven’t played a first team match since 12th December, a 1-0 loss away at Plymouth Parkway in the League.
