Introduction
Need for standard fish names
Public and consumer confidenceis supremely important to the well being of Australias $2.5 billionseafood industry. Standard fish names remove confusion, strengthen consumer confidence, createmarket efficiency, underpin effective species-based fisheries management, and improvemanagement of food safety.
Australia has over 4500 native species of finfish, and many more crustaceans and molluscs.Several hundred of these species are important commercially, and many others supportrecreational activities such as fishing and diving. Australia also imports seafood products consistingof many other fish species from around the world to help satisfy the increasing demand forseafood.
Confusion over fish names has been caused by the numerous species Australia has on offer, aspecies being known by more than one name, or the same name being used for more than onespecies. As early as the 1920s, meetings were held in Sydney to discuss fish names as the localand regional variations were becoming apparent.
Extensive work on standardizing names used for fish in Australia has been undertaken since theearly 1980s by industry, governments, scientists and other stakeholders. Major progress has beenmade since 1992 as a result of strategic investments by the Fisheries Research and DevelopmentCorporation. SSA has maintained this momentum since it accepted responsibility for standardizingfish names in 2001, culminating in the development of this Standard.
The Australian Standard Fish Names Standard includes agreed names for over 600 commerciallyimportant domestic and imported species of fish, and over 4,000 other domestic finfish. Theprocess of assigning these agreed names drew on the expertise of several of the worlds bestfisheries taxonomists and other key stakeholders.
The development and maintenance of this Standard is underpinned by rigorous procedures thathave been agreed to by government, industry and other stakeholders over the last two decades
and which are administered by SSA and its Fish Names Committee.
Purpose of this Standard
Use of standard fish names in Australia, as defined in this Standard, achieves outcomes that areconsistent with the aims of industry and governments, including:
improved sustainability of fisheries resources (use of standard names by all stakeholdersenables more accurate fisheries monitoring and stock assessments)
improved industry profitability (increased efficiency in seafood marketing and consumerconfidence)
reduced public health risks (more effective management of food safety and seafood relatedpublic health incidents)
reduced potential for misleading and deceptive conduct (more accurate trade descriptorsenable consumers to make more informed choices when purchasing seafood).
Preparation of this Standard
SSA is an accredited Standards Australia, Standards Development Organisation.. This Standard wasprepared by the SSAs Fish Names Committee (FNC) in accordance with requirements set down fordeveloping Australian Standards.
