I am appealing to you, the parent or carer reading this. You decide if your child stays home from school. You are the person responsible for allowing nonaendance at school. I need to chal- lenge your thinking on this issue. The last day of Term 2 2014 we had 72.6% aendance. That is simply unacceptable. We cannot connue to allow chil- dren to be away from school. It is business as usual in the last week, cer- tainly there are more rewards and going on, but we sll teach, even on the last day. In Term 3 we are going to be holding class and team challenges throughout the day that will be focused around Higher Order Thinking Skills… challenges of engineering etc... More to come later on these days (which we would love to have some parent teams parcipate). Principal plays with dollies…

I have been asked a few questions about me playing with ‘dollies’ in last

week’s newsletter, in fact quite a few people made mention of it (all posi-

tive). I thought I would explain a little more about the image. The girls were

making a stop animation film. I was curious and stopped to watch and as I

have a young daughter I naturally found myself playing with the girls and

dressing the dolls. We started to discuss the body shape of the dolls and

naturally we had a very interesting chat about body image and zero sized

models. Often the unplanned learning events can be the most powerful…

Attendance

As you are aware we are having a strong focus on attendance. It will be an ongoing priority for the school. I am appealing to you, the parent or carer reading this. You decide if your child stays home from school. You are the person responsible for allowing nonattendance at school. I need to chal-lenge your thinking on this issue. The last day of Term 2 2014 we had 72.6% attendance. That is simply unacceptable. We cannot continue to allow chil-dren to be away from school. It is business as usual in the last week, cer-tainly there are more rewards and going on, but we still teach, even on the last day. More to come later on these days (which we would love to have some parent teams participate).

Please, consider that attendance at school is vital to the wellbeing of your children, their development and their long term outcomes.

Come and have a yarn with me… Minister for Education

I met with Kate Jones yesterday (you may have seen us on the news on Wednesday night) and Robbie Katter to discuss the issues we face in our school. The meeting albeit short was an important opportunity to get across the long term goals for our school and how as a Minister Kate could address them.

Fund raising for 5-6 trip

We held an auction for the 5/6 class on Wednesday night and I would like to make special mention of John Elliott. John bid for a signed Cowboys ball, he then handed it straight away to one of our students. It was one of those moments that made your heart smile. Good on you John.

What a week! We have been very busy completing assessment

pieces. We had a surprise this week. The Minister for Educa-

tion and Tourism, Mrs Kate Jones, and Member for Mt Isa

Mr Robbie Katter visited us in our classroom. Channel Nine

also came in to film the class with the Minister and Mr Katter.

The Minister was very keen to hear from the students on their

favourite things to do in Winton. She explained to the children

that today she was announcing a new tourism campaign to

promote Winton as a destination for city people. Minister

Jones and Mr Katter were very keen to also hear that the chil-

dren had been reading the book “Bungawitta” by Emily Rodda

which has a storyline about a small town that has been in

drought for many years and holds a festival to entice the tour-

ists to come. Mr Katter and Minister Jones were also very hap-

py to have photos taken with the children. We also had a visit

from Cassie from Medicare Local to give us a talk about

healthy eating and keeping ourselves healthy. Lessons the

class learnt were –

1. A bottle of a Coke has 20 teaspoons of sugar and a can has

10.

2. We need 5 servings of vegetables and 2 serves of fruit a day.

3. If you eat too much food high in sugar then you can get

rotten teeth.

4. PowerAde is not actually healthy due to the level of sugar

and salt.

A very interesting and informative talk.

Until next week,

News from Year 3/4

Our School Choir joined with “The Voices of Winton” adult

choir to perform our home grown version of Waltzing Matilda

out at the Australian Age of Dinosaurs on Wednesday. The

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk and Education Minister Kate

Jones joined in heartily from the dias behind us. The students

did Winton State School very proud, both with their perfor-

mance and their behaviour throughout the ceremony which

was held to launch the Outback Queensland Tourism

brand. We were also lucky enough to have our photo taken

with MP Rob Katter and celebrity Tanya Kernaghan. There

were also some guest dinosaurs, Matilda and Banjo.

HPE News

The time trials were run on Wednesday afternoon for the

North West Cross Country. All of the students put in their best

effort and each achieved great times! Well done to them, and

good luck for selection!

Science News

7/8 Science this week

discovered different

methods for the treat-

ment of water. They

constructed their own

water filter and tweaked

their designs to see

which combination of

materials filtered the

water the best.

9/10 Science found that

when citric acid and so-

dium hydrogen car-

bonate, not only does it

fizz superbly, but it also becomes really cold! This is an exam-

ple of an endothermic reaction, where the chemicals take heat

from the surrounding area and uses it to form new products.

A product of this particular reaction was hydrogen gas, the

first element on the periodic table.

This week we had a visit from Medicare

local. We discussed different types of

healthy and unhealthy foods and what

foods we should eat everyday. We played

a fun game and had to sort food into their

groups. We also spoke about healthy teeth

and why we need to brush our teeth daily.
