ARINDAM MAJUMDER
New Delhi, 3 November
As many as 37 aircraft operat-ing out of the Indira GandhiInternational Airport werediverted due to a severe declinein visibility in the country’sCapital city on Sunday. Morethan 250 departures and 300arrivals were delayed and 19cancelled till 8 pm, affectingthousands of flyers.
Visibility on both runwaysof the airport dropped to 600metres from 9 am to 1.30 pm.
“Due to low visibility 37flights have been diverted toplaces including Jaipur,Amritsar, and Lucknow, amongother cities,” said a spokesper-son of the Delhi InternationalAirport Limited (DIAL), whichoperates the Delhi airport and isowned by GMR Infra.
Delhi is India’s busiest air-port and handles around 1,400aircraft per day. The cost ofdiverting an aircraft impactsfinances and operations of anairline and points to the impactthe air pollution crisis can haveon the economy. While divert-ing an aircraft burns fuel, dutyhours of pilots also get extend-ed, posing operational and cashburn issues for firms. Normally, airlines prepare for operationsin low-visibility conditions byscheduling capable aircraft andcrews in such conditions.
This time, however, theunusual timing of such condi-tions caught them off guard.
“We train a certain number
of pilots for operating in low-visibility conditions. From firstweek of December, we usuallypair them in aircraft operatingout of north Indian airports inearly morning hours. However, such conditions in the first weekof November was not account-ed for,” an Air India official said.
Sanjiv Kapoor, chief com-mercial officer, Vistara, said,“Lots of disruptions today(Sunday) across airlines due tolow visibility at the Delhi air-port, unprecedented for thistime of the year. It is not fog sea-son yet.” Vistara was forced tocancel four flights till 8 pm.
A senior official of the IndianMeteorology Department term-ed the event as unusual, blam-
ing pollutants for deterring rain. “The particulate matter in
the air is obstructing properrainfall,” the IMD official said.“The light rain worsened the sit-uation by increasing humidityand helping the pollutants get-ting more concentrated.”
The unprecedented changein weather pattern has forcedairlines to rethink crew sched-uling. Sources said IndiGo andAir India have decided to putpilots trained in low-visibilityoperations in early morningflights for the next two days.
What it means is that air-lines have to train a larger poolof pilots for low-visibility oper-ations and incur an additionalcost — almost ~25 lakh per pilot.

As air quality in theCapital continues todeteriorate, sale of pre-
ventive items like air purifiersand pollution masks havespiked significantly. Firms areobserving a 30 to 100 per centrise in demand compared to thesame period last year.
According to the CentralPollution Control Board (CPCB),the national capital’s 24-houraverage air quality index (AQI)stood at 494 at 4 pm on Sunday, the highest since November 6,2016, when it was 497.
While Hindware is expect-ing sale of its air purifiers to dou-ble this year, Xiaomi, Blue Starand Daikin, too, are expectingsignificant rise in sales.
Haier is already observing aspike in demand from marketsin Delhi and adjoining regions, that contribute over 80 per centof the total market volumes.
Rakesh Kaul, president, CEOand whole-time director atSomany Home Innovation, aHindware group firm, said thatover the past three to four years, the degrading air quality andincreasing concern towardshealth issues has fuelled salesof air purifiers and pollutionmasks in the country.
But with the current situa-
tion in Delhi NCR, there hasbeen a significant growth in theair purifier market. Firms arenot only focusing on meetingthe heightened demand as apublic health emergency isunderway in the region, they arealso taking measures to ease thepurchasing process. Some of thefirms are even concerned aboutthe side effects of completedependence on artificial meas-ures like air purifying machinesand masks as lackof any holisticmeasures to curbair pollution ishaunting citizens.
Panasonic, forexample, is offer-ing extended war-ranty and con-sumer finance options to makepurchases affordable, said SyedMoonis Ali Alvi, general man-ager for air purifier business atthe Japanese firm. A Xiaomispokesperson said the companyhas set up a dedicated page onits shopping portal for air puri-fiers and pollution masks.
Management of other firmslike Blue Star and Nirvanamasks are rather concernedabout the unavailability of nat-ural solutions to the growingproblem. The deterioratingquality of air that began withfire cracker pollutions on Diwalilast week, has now got worse.
B Thiagarajan, joint manag-ing director at Blue Star, saidthat while installing air purifiersat homes, offices and in carshelp in reducing pollution levelsinside the premises, it is the ulti-mate step when no otheroptions are available.
Air purifiers only purify theair inside, which over timeturns toxic with the rising levelsof carbon dioxide.
Given the spike in demand,Blue Star is nowlaunching air con-ditioners with in-build air purifiersthat will suck infresh air from out-side and purify it,at the same time.
Jai Dhar Gupta, proprietor at Nirvana masks, isfacing a supply-side constraintgiven the spike in demand. He isnow procuring additional ship-ment from countries such asChina, the US, and Thailand.
“Early trends suggest thatthis year the growth will bemuch higher than the past aver-age of 30-40 per cent. With tem-perature coming down, windspeed is expected to becomeslower, which will deterioratethe situation,” said Gupta, whowas an advisor to the Delhi gov-ernment in the past.
While the masks market isbooming, with thousands of
players entering with cheaperproducts, Gupta said that useof low-quality masks will nothelp given the severe air quali-ty outside.
Kanwaljeet Jawa, managingdirector and CEO, Daikin India, said that, in the past few years, ithas conducted many sessionson air quality at various socialand corporate platforms andcollaborated with few health ori-ented organisations to spreadawareness on air pollution andits impacts on human health.
Despite growing awarenessabout the menace, the size ofthe air purifier market, however, remains miniscule. Accordingto a Assocham-TechSci study,Indian residential air purifiersmarket is projected to grow at aCAGR of more than 29 per centfrom the current level of ~100 crore ($14.14 million) to~275 crore in 2023.
While the study only con-siders products from majorbrands, industry estimates sug-gest size of the portable air puri-fier products now stands at~180-200 crore, with some200,000 units sold last year. This, however, industry expertssaid may grow to ~240 crore.
According to Jawa, while lastyear a shift towards unbrandedcheaper products was on therise, this year consumers arebetting on trusted brands.
