As always a big thank you to all of our
members and volunteers.!!! Farewell Jo The Recovery Cymru
community gathered
together to say a fond
farewell to Jo Price who is
moving on to pastures new.
Good luck with your new
venture at Vale People First
Jo, we will miss you.
Cardiff Centre Refurbishment Our Cardiff centre recently underwent a refurbishment that
included painting the centre throughout, laying new flooring and
the purchase of new chairs. We would like to extend our thanks
to our members and volunteers for their patience and
understanding during this time. We are very pleased with the
end result and hope that you like it as much as we do
We would also like to say a huge thank you to our colleagues at
Pobl for allowing us to run our groups from Spectrum House
while the refurbishment was underway. We really do appreciate
your support in ensuring that the community
continued to be supported whilst this essential
work was completed.
A big welcome to Andrew!
We would like to welcome Andrew McCutchion to the team who will now undertake the F2R Recovery
Worker role in the Vale. Andrew says “I’m Andrew and have been volunteering with Recovery Cymru since
2017. I had been very involved in recovery and especially using music as a therapeutic tool and way of
creating community for those who had become excluded. With this and my own lived experience in mind I
was looking for something to become part of after arriving in Wales. I found something very special and
unique not only to the Vale but anywhere I had previously been. The peer led environment was
incredibly welcoming, reassuring and supportive. Over time I began facilitating groups,
Buddying and any other task with which I could help. I was determined that I would remain
connected moving forward. A role became available In February 2019 and was lucky enough
to be successful in my application and subsequent interview.
Oh and I still make music whenever the opportunity arises!
NEWSLETTER / Spring /2019
WELCOME VICENT
RC’s involvement in the
Footsteps to Recovery’s
Community Rehab
Programme underwent
some important changes
over recent months and
we’re really pleased that the
changes we have made
incorporate a range of
activities to help people build
up networks of support and
extra-curricular activities,
hobbies and pastimes.
We’ve worked allotments,
enjoyed the lambing at St
Fagan’s (see photo), and
learned to take an interest in
the many places on our
doorsteps where we can
spend quality time. If you’re
interested in participating in
Footsteps to Recovery as a
volunteer or would like the
opportunity to do the
Community Rehab
Programme, please speak to
Andrew Sims (Cardiff) or
Andrew McCutchion (Barry
& Vale).
We have just completed the latest round of
volunteer training which went really well. We
now have new volunteers starting their
volunteering in RC. They have had some
new ideas including a book club,
reintroduction of a craft/weaving group and a
physical activity group.
Our RC peer volunteers who also volunteer
in the NHS are getting involved with a new
pilot in the Ambulatory care unit within A and
E. This involves delivering Alcohol brief
interventions with people on the ambulatory
care unit and those whose drinking is
problematic will be given a TAITH leaflet and
a follow up phone call. This is a very exciting
project to be part of and our volunteers are
an integral part of this project. The purpose
of this pilot is to help people become aware
of their alcohol consumption to enable them
to make a change if they wish to.
Our volunteers have also been delivering
teaching sessions at UHW to medical and
nursing students alongside Darren
Robinson, the substance misuse lead nurse
based at UHW. These teaching sessions
have been extremely well received and been
evaluated very positively.
We would like to extend a
very warm Recovery
Cymru Welcome to our
current ETS student Vicent
who has joined us from
sunny Spain. Vicent is
enjoying his time with
Recovery Cymru and will
be with us until the end of
June.
We are currently engaging
with Taith-EDAS, Dyfodol
(Alcohol workshop), 4
winds, CAU, wellbeing
social prescribers at Dr
surgery’s and the
ASFA/CARDUF service
user forums.

It was such a privilege to represent Recovery
Cymru by attending the GSK AWARDS in
London's Science museum last week. Mixing
with other fantastic charities I learned about
the ways in which GSK has supported others
and will support Recovery Cymru as we grow
and develop. Many thanks to GSK; and to
Recovery Cymru for giving me the
opportunity to represent our community
