We are proud to announce that Mashrek International School is now an official Primary

Years Programme (PYP) candidate school. We have appointed Mrs. Reem Dajani as the PYP Coordinator who will be working with a unique team of educators, both heads and teachers, from our kindergarten and Primary School.

What is the Primary Years Programme? The IB Primary Years Programme, for students aged 3 to 12 from Pre-KG to Grade 4, focuses on the development of the whole child as an inquirer, both in the classroom and in the world outside.

The most significant and distinctive feature of the IB Primary Years Programme is the six transdisciplinary themes.

Interviewer: first of all it is a great honor to meet Your Royal Highness we are very proud as Jordanians to have such an organization that contributes to the Jordanian community. If Your Highness would allow starting by asking some questions .When was the Al Hussein Society for the Habilitation and Rehabilitation of the Physically Challenged established?

HRH: The society was first registered with the ministry of social development in 1971 but under the name of Al Hussein Society for child welfare, because together with some friends I had started to visit governmental orphanages around Amman and we found that they really needed help. They were in really pitiful situation so we started to help these orphanages by renovating, employing more staff to help with a new establishment of a big orphanage up in Ashrafiya. We also helped in collecting money to build their building and get it furnished and we kept doing this for quite few years, but at the same time we started to visit the rehabilitation centre, the care home, for people with physical challenges in Ashrafiya in connection with Al Basher hospital; which also needed help; they lacked staff so we collected money and did the same thing there. We then came across few teenagers and young ladies who had been suffering with that physical challenge in that care room for years and years and no one seemed to care for their future or education. And one day they were expelled from the center because they needed to have space for other people and there were no one to follow up not even social workers. They couldn’t go back home because their families didn’t want them as their homes didn’t fit for people in wheelchairs so we took care of these 3 or 4 young ladies and we managed to get a large room in the orphanage we helped to set in Ashrafiyah with the help of the Ministry of Social Development. The ministry gave this room to us. It was originally made for small orphan children not for the disabled, so we hosted and looked after them in this room and put them on different educational courses. One of them became a teacher another did home economics. There were more kids, and others who needed help came saying “why not us? “. We noticed that no one seemed to do anything for these people, we found a villa in Om Othina and we turned this villa into a small amateurish center where the dining room became a class room and the living room became a dormitory and the little garage became a small tiny rehab department. The ministry of social development closed the existing center in Ashrafiyah after we opened this new one because they needed that building for administration so more and more people started flooding to our centre.

We noticed that there was a great need for an

organization to do something for people with physical disabilities and that was the beginning. We ran the operation in that villa for five years, but after two years we found that there was still a greater need. We had big dreams for this place. His Majesty King Hussein kindly assigned 10 donuhms of the land of the automobile club for this purpose, and then we had designs from a Swedish architect who worked in Amman at that time. I gave this nice glossy plan to Her Royal Highness Princess Basma who was going on a tour in the Gulf States to raise money for different projects I gave it to her and hoping that she could raise any funds for this project. She showed it to Sultan Qaboos of Oman who came up with funds for the construction, the basic furniture and equipment and we have settled in this building since 1984.

Interviewer: In general what are the cases that come to the society?

HRH: Children with Spinal Bifida, Muscular-dystrophy, CP (Cerebral Palsy) in the beginning we thought we would not take cases with CP because they often have some brain damage too, we thought we were not capable of handling these cases, but now we tend to accept more and more children with mild intellectual challenges.

Interviewer: Your Highness what is the total number of beneficiaries of the programs provided by the society so far?

HRH: I don’t have a definite figure but its many thousands ,we have been active for almost 26 years, we have around a hundred children enrolled in the school each year and so many others who come for other services and for the outreach programs ,but all in all a minimum 1000 a year.

Interviewer: Your Highness , don’t you think the society should expand their capacity in the

rehabilitation school?

We could but it is not possible in the mean time as we can hardly manage with what we have. Ideally the trend internationally is to have schools where children with physical disabilities are integrated in the normal school system. Our role would be to help them in these schools. It’s very difficult to integrate them in the current schools, because these are already overburdened. There are 30- 40 students in every class, and if there stairs , there isn’t suitable ramps for wheelchairs, the toilets are so narrow to get into and the proper transportation is absent, private schools should make a bigger effort to accept more of the physically challenged children.

Interviewer: What services does the centre provide?

HRH: Over the years we have grown and expanded we have many programs that have just started up , the basic thing is a comprehensive overall rehabilitation for children with physical challenges from birth up to around the age of 10-12 with physiotherapy, hydrotherapy, occupation therapy, social and psychological counseling, hobbies, activities, home visits by social workers and so on. Mainly we try to prepare these children who were not able to go to normal schools to get them prepared to Enter a normal school system, “integration” is the key word, and then send them to society and the world, alongside with these basic things we have a wonderful orthotic workshop. We make all the devices that these children need. We also have outreach programs together with other organizations in villages and towns around Jordan we used to work in Palestinian UNURWA camps but due to various circumstances this had stopped. We are now entering the Zarqa camp and creating a centre there.

We are also working to become a resource and educational training centre for students from different universities who are studying rehabilitation or nursing we have made good agreements with various universities and resource centre for the establishment of smaller rehabilitation centers around the kingdom. We have no other divisions or sections and we use the capacity and resources available, we believe in community based Rehabilitation, to help the community help itself.

Interviewer: what does Your Highness expect from the local community, how can individuals in our community help and support the Al Hussein Society?

HRH: First we need their financial support, this work we are doing is for Jordanian children , the public in general should also take responsibility in helping out. Of course there are so many other welfare and charity organizations, it’s very difficult to compete and get help. Ideally this services that we are giving should be given by the government, not as a charity, as it is guaranteed by the human rights’ agreements. In Jordan we have not been able to reach that stage yet because of all the different circumstances; political problems, wars, and economical difficulties. We are situated in a troubled part of the world incapable of reaching that stage, where people with disabilities are provided for by governmental programs. Thank

god there is the Higher Council for the affairs of Persons With Disabilities, which my husband His Royal Highness Prince Raed is head of, which will hopefully seek for a full coverage nationwide of everything that is needed by every person with any disability. It will take time and is still costly. The way they are doing it is through existing organizations such as ours they started now to support us to give services that are needed instead of starting from scratch, they the council ,buy for instance some of our services like paying 60 JDs for each child, while the child cost us around 550 JDs minimum per month as we provide everything he needs such as the one to one education.

Interviewer: Your Highness what are the obstacles people with physical challenges face and do you think people have changed their perspective toward the people with physical disabilities? Are they more or less accepted in our society?

HRH: The frightening thing that some people here still classify physically handicapped children sitting on wheelchairs as mentally challenged, unaware of the fact that you may have physical problems but you may be the brightest and most intelligent person, we are concentrating on raising awareness regarding this issue.

I think after all these years there is more awareness and families are getting out of hiding and relinquishing the feeling of stigma and shame for having a child who is handicapped. They see that our services are helpful, surely things have changed, instigate by media, maybe it is not enough, but there has been a noticeable difference.

Interviewer: what are the most difficulties the Society face?

HRH: Again small funds are available. It’s not easy to support the society financially, we still certainly rely on donations by good fellow citizens of Jordan, even with organizations’ cooperation, we still ask our foreign friends to help, but I feel embarrassed to ask for foreign help when they come here and see all the incredible cars and villas in west Amman.

The Jordanian citizens should help their own. We appeal to people’s conscious and certainly need their help.

We were so happy to be the first Arab country to sign the declaration for the rights of the disabled, in the United Nations. I was there with my husband, it was a great moment in the general assembly, when each representative reached the podium and the moment of signing was impressing.

Interviewer: Finally Your Highness we want to ask you about your future aims and goals and what you expect the society would be able to give in the coming years?

HRH: Our aims is to sustain what we are doing currently and also carry on and expand this sort of work that is starting up in Zarqa and with other organizations through training their staff, and to help the Higher Council with their great role. We see where there is a deficiency and where there are needs and bring them to the council through official channels, and our hope is that one day along with the general development of Jordan and the economic stability that such service would be provided more automatically. A large sector of the population is now getting their health care we hope that the needs of the people with disabilities would be taken into consideration. The ultimate aim is to change this work from a work of charity to a governmental obligation. This will still take quite some time but eventually it will happen.

We hope that social awareness of the students in Jordanian’ schools will constantly grow, and that students who are lucky to get the good education are aware of those in the country who are less privileged and take action to help their fellow Jordanian citizens.

Interviewer: Thank you very much your highness for your time, we really appreciate the efforts your Highness put into the society. We would also like to thank Ms. Anne Abu Hannah who arranged the meeting with Your Royal Highness.

Throughout the holistic school yea0r of 2009-2010, students of MYP5 English A1, focused

on African culture, tradition and hardships the African society has faced in different regions of the world. Student of MYP5 initiated their final year of MYP with the “Top-selling” novel, “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Nelle Harper Lee, which discussed the troubles, hardship and difficulties that the African-American society had faced in Alabama, where a young girl scout, lives with her wealthy father, Atticus, who defends the African man, Tom Robinson, who was accused for raping a poor white girl, Marella. What is more as the school year continued student were introduced to the African society in depth, from the Best seller novel, “Thing Fall Apart”, by Chinua Achebe, a Nigerian writer whose main focus was to prevail the true African society to the people, and to clarify the faulse accusations concerning the

African society. In his novel, he revealed to the readers the tribal African traditions, customs and culture, which inspired the student of MYP5, with their final task, “Presentations on African Culture”.

These presentations preformed by the student of MYP5 were outstanding, as the students used all their knowledge and skills they had obtained being a MYP students, as each and every presentation reflected a certain aspect in each group’s personality. Different groups’ chose different aspects in the African society, such as drama, music, food, the role of women, celebration and funeral, religion, and art; which was presented in a different format, depending on the characteristics and personality of each group.

Due to the massive success of our presentations, I would like to share the magnificent experience I had while working with my close friend, Ala’a

Abdo. Ala’a Abdo and I chose to discuss an aspect in African culture which reflects our personality, and this aspect was Drama. Drama is an important aspect in prevailing culture and lifestyle, it reflect the culture as a unique pictures to the viewers, allowing the culture to seep in an individual. During our presentation, Ala’a and I preformed a short sketch from one of the famous Nigerian movies, Throne of Blood, which discusses a deep desire for power, leading to the disobedience against the holy Gods and sprits. And through this our fellow viewers had a picture painted in their minds concerning the African culture. After that we provided a deep description on the importance of drama in their society, and the importance of costumes and masks and finally with a deep profound similarities with the Jordanian or Arab drama.

Throughout the IBDP, we were given many lectures from our IB coordinator about the

group 4 project. The project seemed challenging, at least that’s what we thought it would be and it would consume a large amount of effort and time. In the final year of the International Baccalaureate Programme, our IB coordinator Ms.Mirna gave us the deadline for the group 4 project and we were instructed to immediately start working on the project in order to meet the deadline. My group and I which consisted of four individuals had chosen a very interesting topic for biology and that topic was “The effect of radiation and heat on the human body” we were told by our respectable Biology teacher Ms.Sahar that this topic is a very unique one and it relates to our daily use of electronics such as laptops, televisions, and etc. After our topic was chosen, we had to split the group 4 criteria between the group members. The group consisted of Ahmad Jafari, Ibrahim Nabulsi, Rafi Matloob, and me. The criterion of the group 4 project is split into two categories which are design and presentation. The designing of the presentation consists of the boards made which contained pictures and

information about our topics and the presentation contains the organization of the data and finding out ways which attract the listener’s attention. After discussion with the group, we have come to a decision that Rafi and Ibrahim should take care of the design, and Ahmad and I were in charge of the presentation. After the criterion was split and each member of the group had been assigned his role in the project it was time to start posing our ideas for the project to work.

The Design of the Board was pretty simple, our idea was to place four posters on the board then decorations and finishing touches would be placed to make it more attractive. Out of the four posters, two posters will be outlining the effect of heat on the human body and the two other posters will outline the effect of radiation on the human body. Rafi chose to assemble the posters concerning the effects of heat and my partner Ibrahim was left to assemble the posters concerning the effects of radiation. Once the decisions were made we started working on the posters, Ahmad helped Rafi with his posters and I helped Ibrahim with his. We started by doing basic research about each topic

and after the research was done, we would gather up all the facts that we found were important to an everyday electronics user and placed them on the posters. We also gathered numerous pictures which would help outline the effects clearly to the listener and give him or her a clear image of what the consequences are. After a Few weeks of research and working on the posters they were finally done, and we placed them in Miss Mirna’s office in order not to lose them.

Since the Design phase of the Group 4 project was finally done with, Ahmad and myself had to split the presentation criterion between us, I chose to take the effects of radiation on the human body and he chose to take the effect of heat on the human body. Our idea was basically to inform the listener on the dangers of heat and radiations emitted from electronics and help prevent the listener from exposing him/herself to these dangers. I myself started by doing research on my topic and only took the extremely important facts which would be important to the listener; Ahmad also followed my steps in researching and carried out the same process of data collection. Once we both finished the data collection we obtained full knowledge of the important facts in order to make the presentation successful.

As a result the group four project was a blast for me and my colleges, the topic personally affected me and I now take my safety precautions once using any electronic device. This project also brought me closer to the guys I was working with and I hope similar experiences such as this project will come my way in University,

topic was Technology, and as we know we are at a time were technology is dominating everything and its effect is very evident in our lifestyle.

Our Students talked about interesting technological topics such as the touch phone mechanism, as well as the effect of laptops on human fertility along various aspects. The posters prepared were very organized and comprehensive, and the people who attended the exhibition of this project were very interested in what the students were saying.

Finally, I believe this experience does not only contribute to the widening of our students horizons, but also contributed to the enhancement of team work and research values and qualities.

skills and values within its students. It made it necessary for students to conduct a thorough and precise project about one of the aspects of a chosen topic, under the name of the « Group 4 project». Through out the process of conducting this project the students interacted together, shared their ideas and experiences as well as worked together hand in hand to produce a coherent well established research. Each student was expected to communicate the main topic according to the science subjects (Biology , Chemistry , Physics) he/she chose in the IB diploma.

This year, our students chose a topic that we , as members of the school community , can relate to. A topic that we deal with in our daily lives. The

Group 4 project consists of three sciences Biology, Chemistry and Physics. This

project gave us the chance to appreciate the environmental, social and ethical implications of science; it allowed us to understand the limitations of scientific study.

This project should be a collaborative experience where concepts and perceptions from across the group 4 disciplines are shared. In each group there were four students , were we discussed the limitations of the topic between our hands by analyzing the problem that can be investigated in each of the science disciplines offered by the school.

Our group 4 project theme was about Electronic

Devices; since it can be tackled from different aspects; Biology, chemistry and physics. My group and I discussed pacemakers and blood pressure measuring devices. Our chosen topic was pacemakers in which we discussed it is components using chemistry and how its implanted in the body using biology . Moreover, we started to put a plan for our work, part of our plan was to visit a cardiologist to know more about the use of pacemakers and how they are implanted. Finally, our work in this project was presented as a science fair, in which we invited some parents, teachers and students from different classes, to give them an idea about group 4 project.

Group 4 was not only about studying and researching, but also about exploring science in a fun way.

The students council has organized for the

second year , a quiz night . It is one of the most

entertaining events held in our school ,where

students get the chance of having fun as well as

enriching their knowledge. Divided into groups

each consisting of 6 members ,the students

answered questions related to many issues and topics : entertainment , music , sports , science , and general knowledge . The event wouldn’t have been that fruitful without the contribution of our sponsors and council committee. The best thing about it is that no one left empty handed.

In the Chemistry part of group 4 projects we researched about the chemical constituents of obsolete electronics components

generally. And computers specifically. We talked about the following.:

• What are the chemical components found in electronic devices and how are they released upon disposal in addition to the parts of the computers released.

• How do these chemicals affect the environment and human’s health

• What to do to minimize these effects

• Economical impact.

We were a group of four , each one researched a subtopic, and we displayed it on Posters that were hung around table demonstrating the discussed topics.

The project was based on group research ; we met a few times and collected our individual research. Everyone had sufficient information about the topic so that he or she would be capable to answer any question. The day of the project was only to organize and find ways to portray our work in an attractive way. We showed the explanatory films on the laptop.

Group 4 is one of the IB requirements, it is a kind of project that reflects useful investigations of sciences; such as physics, biology and chemistry. We were

divided into many groups each concentrating on a different topics. My group handled two sciences; biology and chemistry.

• The biology part was extremely interesting; it revolved around two main topics.

• The benefits and sideffects of the electronic cigarette.

• Endoscopy and the use of pill cam.

• The chemistry part introduced two distinctive subjects:

• Haber process and fertilizers.

• Instruments used in detecting ozone depletion.

To make the idea seem more realistic to people we used real devices such as a real pack of electronic cigarettes. Moreover we conducted investigations on the fertilizers to gain a more in-depth understanding of the topic.

Group 4 is an extraordinary experience in which we learnt the importance of group work, commitment and responsibility. Not to forget, the entertainment we experienced through out the process of gathering information and doing the experiments related to the topics .

It took us hours to decorate the background and the cardboards in order to achieve the expected outcome that would attract the attention of the students and people. We utilized our efficient skills and confidence to present the topics successfully and maturely .

We have been organizing for this event since last semester, and started to take actions continuously the last three weeks during school and after. Miss Fadya our organizer and supervisor chose a committee from our class and which was divided into different groups, each group was responsible for a specific task.

Presentation, leaders, welcoming students, and a group for boards, these were the main four groups we were separated into. Our presentation had to contain a general introduction about our school, the IB program since our school is officially authorized as an IBO school, the political and economical systems in Jordan, Historical places, traditions, music and more aspects concerning our culture. The presentation was scheduled the first 30 minutes of our day; it was a great success, full of details, pictures, and even music. Our students memorized and worked hard on their tasks, turned out to be a great achievement, and we were able to introduce the Belgian students to our world.

The second group was consisted of the leaders; we’re separated into eight different groups, every group had a specific color, with fifteen ribbons for fifteen students, and we were assigned in group numbers too. Every leader had to choose three students from our class and the rest were from our guests. Moreover each leader with his group was responsible for entertaining their group into two different activities to be selected from music/art/sports…etc.

As for the third group, which consisted of four Mashrek students that were responsible for welcoming the guests and guide them through our school from the main gate till the theater to start with our presentations.

The last group was responsible for organizing the boards, we were responsible for getting the cardboards for the backgrounds, we had to get pictures for the historical places in Jordan, information about each place, and we had to join them together on different boards, students were separated into different groups, we all worked hand in hand to achieve our goal, thus the great support from our class, and our helpful creative supervisor Miss Fadya Khoury. We started taking action with our boards first, Miss Fadya Khoury suggested the idea of posters too. We got different posters of the beautiful historical places from travelling agencies in Jordan. We also got brochures and magazines advertising the fantastical places and different aspects people in Jordan enjoy, making stands for our posters, and getting brief information about each place.

Our boards were done on time resulting creative colorful boards, every board consisted of two or more historical places filled with colored pictures and useful information, with the help of our art teachers.

We also got ribbons, made numbered cardboards for every group, and every leader of each group had his/her badge. Later on, moving on

with our actions two students were responsible from the committee made big cardboards and placed them where the activities will take place, for a brighter environment and a welcoming atmosphere.

Every IB1 student contributed a small amount of money to offer the guests Arabic sweets and coffee.

On Monday the 15th of February, we IB 1 students spent a whole day with 95 students from Belgium who came to visit Jordan.

After we were given time to welcome the members

of our group and introduced ourselves we headed to the theater where a group of our Mashrek students gave a brief presentation. It was presented smoothly and fluently which made it very interesting. All the presenters were very confident and maintained eye contact with the audience which made it a remarkable presentation. Additionally, they introduced us to their country Belgium and their school in a pleasant presentation as well. Afterwards, a 15 min coffee break has been organized by us IB students, where we offered a number of Arabic sweets and Arabic coffee. Some of them actually liked the sweets and tried all of them and even came back for more. The Arabic coffee however wasn’t appreciated that much by them, but still some of them were brave enough to try it.

Afterwards, we moved as a group to the activities. My group (3) first went to take a drama lesson. The drama teacher gave us amusing games through which we had the opportunity to get to know their names by heart and helped us to ‘break the ice’. After this entertaining activity, we went down to the activity floor where three activities were held: stealing tweezers, pulling the rope and jumping the rope. These games where all exclusively pleasurable and gave us once more the chance to get to know the visitors better. Nevertheless, next time we should maybe send them the agenda with the activities for them to decide where they prefer to participate in,

because there would be too much chaos if they want to decide this on the spot.

After participating in the organized activities and a light lunch, we boarded the buses and left the school at 1pm and headed for Jerash.

Upon arrival each student was provided with a cap to protect themselves from the sun and oppressive heat. We then all walked to The Roman Oval Piazza to take a group photograph.

We were then split up into two groups and began our tour of Jerash. The guests students were provided with a tanslater so the students were able to understand and ask questions in French.

After approximately 3 hours students from both groups met up in the main amphitheatre and sat down for a rest. Three men in traditional Arabic costumes began to play Arabic music on bagpipes and the tableh. Some of the Mashrek students began dancing the traditional dabkeh while the Belgian students clapped along and took photographs. The atmosphere was electric and everyone seemed to be having a good time.

After 15 minutes when the tour was finished, everyone gathered at the entrance of Jerash and walked to the cafeteria for refreshments. The Belgium students went to the shop and bought some souvenirs to remind them of their visit.

Everyone then gathered in a large area beside the buses. Here we had the opportunity to ask the guests what they thought of their visit. They replied that they were really impressed with the Roman ruins and had enjoyed particularly the Arabic music and dancing. They also commented on the wonderful greenery and flowers surrounding the hills of Jerash.

Time had come to depart back to school and hotels which brought an end to a successful and enjoyable trip for everyone. We are proud, as hosts that are guests enjoyed their visit to our school and trip to Jerash and hope that they will go home to Belgium and tell their friends and families what a wonderful, unique place Jordan is.

All in all, it was a very remarkable and unforgettable experience to meet with students of the same age from another continent with a totally different social background and try to communicate with each other and maybe even learn from each other. Personally, it strengthened me in many areas such as international understanding and team work with students who didn’t even speak the same language as we do properly. I hope that they enjoyed the time we spent together.

As a requirement to graduate from the (Middle Year Programme) “MYP”, the students must

embark on a personal project during grade 9 and have it completed during grade 10. On March 15, 2010, the first graduating year of MYP had completed their personal projects and showcased it during an exhibition held by the school in front of family, teachers and peers respectively.

The exhibition opened up with a series of presentations the students of Grade 10 preformed to the parents and attendees. Each student then left to his prospective booth where they introduced their personal projects. These projects included different subjects such as health, architecture, art etc. The students had to begin in Grade 9 and work on it for two years.

Ghazi Al Taher did his personal project creating a 2-D compound composed of 16 villas. He even went as far as to contact the mayor of Amman, Omar Ma’ani and met with him over his idea and asked him a couple of questions. Mr. Ma’ani congratulated him of his amazing idea and was very proud of the work Ghazi put into it. He even told him that he would look into investing in his idea and finding the space for it.

Waed Khuzai on the other hand wrote and published

her own book on diabetics and healthy eating recipes. With both her grandparents diagnosed with diabetes, she used them as an inspiration to spread awareness around other people and teach them healthy ways of eating. She made a variety of healthy soups and salads to give out to her audience which everyone enjoyed! Waed said she picked health as her subject because she believes it is important to help people in any way possible to lead to healthy lives.

The parents were very surprised with what the students have done and enjoyed every minute of the presentation. One mother stated that she was “very impressed” with what she has seen and that it showed that the students have put a “lot of effort” into it”. Another mom stated that this is the start to

a “change in the world” and that to do this you must have “responsibility which every student exhibited today”.

At the end of the exhibition, some of the students offered to give some advice to our current ninth graders who are about to embark on their journey of personal projects:

“Work Hard, This is No Joke”- Reem Madan

“Think Carefully About the Subject” – Hanan Shaheen

pErsONAl prOjECtBy Fawzi Al-Ansari

Activities and Events

“Relate the Subject to Yourself as Much as You Can” – Leen

“No Hardness Felt About Something You Love Doing” – Ghazi Al Taher

At the end of the exhibition, the grade 10 students broke out in singing and dancing to celebrate their achievements and results.

We would like to laud all grade 10 students for their excellent work in the first annual personal projects for the first graduating year of the MYP program and wish the best of luck to all current 9th graders.

Each Year , and as a part of the Visual Art subject of the IB Diploma Programme , art students

are required to prepare pieces about a certain theme, and exhibit them at the annual mashrek art exhibition.

This year’s exhibition and like all the other previous ones was unique, Each student chose a theme that goes with her personality and matches her interests. The student Mira Mirza chose an extremely unique theme inspired by a story called the Amazon Women, The story of the Woman of the dead sea, homosexual women that were independent in that area, her pieces reflected artistic mastery and creativity.

As for Yasmeen Kayed ,she chose a theme related to her heritage, she talked about Bedouin women, in which she communicated her beliefs and thoughts through artistic pieces that reflects thorough understanding of the cultural dimensions of Bedouin women.

The Student Mellisa Barmawi talked about the story of Petra , told by the guardian of Petra a character she created from her imagination.

Finally Lamees Maaita Talked about the end of the world in 2012 from a very creative and unique prospection, she captured the essence and brutality of the chaos that might bring the world to an end.

The first PYP exhibition at Mashrek International School was held in the 18th of March, of this

year 2010. It communicated several cases, generally about organization skills, and contributions towards the society.

The exhibition was considered a successful event prepared by fifth graders. It was a very creative, well organized and reflective exhibition that enabled the entire school community to interact and learn about their journey. Students were concerned about discussing global topics that are highly controversial. The topics chosen allowed the students to unleash their creativity and show their determination towards learning about the hot topics that threaten our world. The students chose to work under the umbrella of one of the following themes; (How we organize ourselves, how the world works, and sharing the planet).

They went through a long process, and worked with their mentors on weekly basis. Having a process journal and reflecting on each and every experience they went through (e.g. interviewing, videotaping, etc…), and finally presenting their work in front of an audience during this special day. Each group explained their topic briefly. The groups also had separate booths where they introduced their work in a unique way to attract the visitors and spread awareness (through posters, debates, and plays). Each chose the manner in which to display their topics to the visitors of the exhibition. Three of the groups presented short plays, tackling the issues of hunting white tigers, human rights, and child labor. Parents, teachers and students rotated from one booth to the other to listen and observe the different projects. Soft music was also included to entangle the audience within the show.

Parents thoughts and reflections:

I highly appreciate the teachers’ efforts and support for the students. The presentations are creative and organized, students learned to enjoy their education and to be responsible and creative. I enjoyed every moment as I was going around the exhibition. I suggest that the presentations take place separately from the parents to make it clearer for the viewers.

Mr. Hamza Al-Hassan.

Overall the opinions and ideas of the students were taken, and the level of understanding of the topics was of a high level.

Omar Kasab:

Was one of the presenters of the topic “2012 is not real AT ALL”? This student was a very knowledgeable student who was interviewed. He was very confident while presenting. He was reflecting enthusiasm, care and responsibility.

How did you benefit from the experience?

Actually, I am proud of what I have done during this exhibition as I started to be more caring, a communicator, a thinker, and a responsible person.

Teachers’ point of view of this annual exhibition varied, between different perspectives. “It was an excellent opportunity for the students to express themselves, they indeed, gained positive attitudes and helpful skills through their work and today as they present their outcome” Mrs. Reem Al-Dajani the PYP coordinator stated proudly. However other teachers claimed that more time was needed to carry out this demonstration more perfectly “The students were in a rush, they needed more time to prepare themselves, but they tried their best” some said. Between positive and negative remarks one opinion was summing up the experience over all and it was Dr. Hana Malhas the School principal when she said “noticing small children working, and practicing research and presentation skills like this really impressed me, and older generations should take them as role models…”. Mrs. Hanin Elayyan, the exhibition supervisors found this experience a fruitful and a successful one. She felt that the pyp community overall cooperated and worked all together, as the students’ contributions were efficient and clear from the start. “This helped us become inguirers, and developed a knowledgeable and open minded generation eager to learn and work more” she summed up.

“As I always believe learning and teaching are conjugal processes, through grades exhibition all mentors, teachers, students and parents can share this experience. At the early stages of planning for the exhibition and group’s distribution, it

seemed overwhelming for some mentors but now after seeing the outcomes we’ll be missing all the tough, long and hard moments. We are all proud of our student’s outstanding projects.” Head of Primary School Haneen Atmeh.

Reaching this point of innovation, and intelligent work is indeed a thing that we all must be proud of. Children between the age of ten and twelve years old whose work was based upon appropriate research and communication

The girls from a public school in Sweileh paid us a visit on Thursday 31st of March, during school hours from 09:00 am

till 12:00 am. It was an activity for exchanging experiences; an opportunity to share our interests and differences. The day turned out to be beneficial, entertaining, and successful.First, we were divided into different groups; the first group was the welcoming group. The welcoming group comprised Raneen Zaatarah and myself who went to the school gate to greet 40 girls, and guide them around our school to the theatre to start our day. At the theatre Farah Salah and Hasan Nabulsi had a presentation ready to show our visitors the activities and trips that our students enjoy in the educational IB program Mashrek provides, and finally the educational and entertainment events that take place at Mashrek. This presentation gave our visitors a good idea of what the Mashrek school is about. The IB 1 Mashrek girls were divided into four activity groups each headed by a leader (Rawan Abu Samra, Raneen Zaatarah, Dyala Saqer, and myself) who had a color to represent her group. Fifty ribbons were made by each leader and given to the members of the group. Each group had two activities organised for our guests, such as music, art, salsa dancing, tug of war...etc, which the visitors participated in from 10:00 am until 11:30 am. This was a wonderful way to communicate and share our common interests as well as a great opportunity to get to know them better. After our activities, we had lunch (from 11:30 till 12:00) in our school cafeteria, but we all sat together in our playground and shared some laughs while we enjoyed our meals.Soon it was time for our visitors to leave. Many pictures were taken and numbers exchanged with promises to stay in touch!

Natural Disasters! Natural disasters are destructive events that can happen on any

day, at any minute. They are difficult to predict and can wipe out a whole country in seconds. People all around the world dread the day these disasters attack. However in most cases, you can do nothing about it. On the 12th of January, 2010, the world came to shock as a catastrophic earthquake with a 7.0 magnitude hit the country of Haiti and during the next ten days, at least 52 aftershocks followed with a magnitude of 4.5 and greater. This catastrophe mercilessly wiped hundreds of thousands of people.

The first TOK conference in Mashrek was held on Sunday 16th of May 2010. It was a great success;

it provided entertainment, knowledge, and exposed our minds to things that we have never thought of. The main objectives of the conference were:

• To allow the students to investigate issues related to their daily lives, and to discuss in details some assumption and beliefs made

• To get students exposed to the concept of TOK

• To provide the students with skills of dealing with others from different classes, opinions and backgrounds, thus enriching their respect and acceptance of other’s points of views and perspectives.

TOK involves ways of knowing; from which language and emotion were chosen, and areas of knowledge; from which sciences, ethics, and arts were chosen. Some students from 11th grade gave presentations on each of these topics while others (grade 10 and 11) participated in various tasks and conducted a debate amongst themselves and the teachers.

As for ethics, the presentation given talked about the roles of reasoning and emotions in ethical evaluation, and explained the four theories of ethical reasoning. The debate questions were first “is it ethical to control someone else’s body or is your body your own right”, and second “are mercy killings

To make things worse Haiti is also one of the poorest countries in the world and its suffering has increased dramatically after the earthquake.

On March 9, 2010 a group of IB-1 students Hasan Nabulsi, Rawan Abu Samra, Ali Kaabneh, Farah Salah, Dyala Saqer and Siwar Qasrawi, and I produced a power point presentation about the earthquake in order to raise awareness and donations to aid the helpless country with money and food. The power point began by discussing our role as a community and we should help in general. The presentation then began with an introduction about the location

of Haiti and the reason for which earthquake occurred. After this, students began to be aware of the lack of food in the country of Haiti and the rapid spread of diseases after the earthquake such as cholera and other epidemics. We demonstrated to the students the difficulties of the survivors, after facing tough hardships these people are going through and the poverty they are living in. We ended the presentation by giving

ethically justified?”Certain clips from the movie “My Sister’s Keeper” were played which related to the questions. The students were then asked to find a theory which best suited them and use it in their debate. Many interesting opinions were given and students became more exposed to these issues.

Concerning languages, the students prepared tasks regarding the questions “Without language would we be able to handle thought or think at all? OR are our thoughts limited by our language?” and “Is language manipulation be a blessing or a curse?” as well as “Is language the most reliable way of communication?” the opinions raised were exquisite, and it was interesting to hear what different people have to say. The questions were ones that never occurred to most of us before, and yet the debate was lively.

As for art, the presentation prepared by the students responsible for that topic introduces the other participants to the different types of arts such as music, sculpture, theatre to name a few. One of the main question raised to the students were ‘How do we evaluate art?’. To approach this main question the students were asked to come up with what they think is an appropriate definition for art. Afterwards, two completely different paintings were shown; ‘Starry night by Van Gosh’ and ‘Black square by Kazimir Malevich’, which they were asked to evaluate. Each group came up with different interpretations for the paintings which made the debate very interesting.

Regarding the topic emotions, the students explained to us what the different forms of emotions are and how they differ from feelings. Additionally, they showed us in the form of a cartoon (Reason and emotion) how emotions stand in the way of reason and vice versa. Hence, the question ‘Can emotions stand in the way of truth?’ was raised and we started the debate. Afterwards, we proceeded to the activity that they prepared; each group received a paper with

the students some ideas about what we should do as a school in order to help these people. This presentation took us a whole day to perform to all students from grades 1 to 11.

The idea of having a dress down day in order to raise donations for these people was a success. Students from grade 6 to grade 11 were asked to pay 3 Jordanian Dinars and in return they can come to school wearing anything they want. Grades 1 to grade 5 on the other hand held a telematch day and were also asked to pay 3 Jordanian Dinars in order to participate. These ideas were a huge success as Mashrek International School donated over 1000 Jordanian Dinars to the country of Haiti in aid for food and shelter for the thousands of people who were left stranded and in desperate need for the international community’s assistance to recover from this devastating calamity. The money was given to the Hashimite Charity Organization and we were honored to meet His Excellency Mohammad Basha Al Omian , the secretary general of the organization.

a topic that they should act out related to different kinds of emotions. For example how an emotionless teacher interact with her students.

In the case of sciences, the group that was responsible to present this topic introduced us to their topic in the form of a short sketch. It showed the students how different people may end up according to how much they let science into their lives. The Large Hadron collider was also a main issue which lead to the question: ‘Should we allow science that can threat humanity and our existence?’ Another important question has been raised during this session: ‘Is science based on facts? Imagination? Or believes’, and upon this question we were able to agree that all of them play a part in science.

Concluding, this TOK conference was very enriching and it strengthened the students in many areas such as debating skills, their way of thinking and interaction with other students. The topics chosen where presented in a very enjoyable and interesting way that even made it hard for us to stop our discussions.

SENIOR’S FAREWELL

fArEwEll stAtEMENtsAhmad Ja3fari: «standing on the summit is harder than reaching it» and with my friends I reached the summit... the summit of love and honesty.

Nadine El Khatib: do not let your fire go out, spark by irreplaceable spark in the hopeless swamp of the not quite, the not yet and the not at all. Do not let the hero in your soul perish in lonely frustration for the life you deserved and have never been able to reach. The world you desire can be won. It exists. It is real. It is possible. It is yours.

Ibrahim Nabulsi: I can’t imagine that I am at the end of the road and heading towards a different direction. I spent unforgettable years and mesmerizing moments that will stay locked in my mind and heart. I consider Mashrek as my second

home. Mashrek opened my eyes to the real world and is the backbone of my journey towards success. Heba Abu Shaar: Since when is leaving school is like a funeral rite where people cry, grief and mourn? I guess that’s enough of a reason for not feeling melancholic for leaving school after 12 years, relax nobody has died.

Zaid Hanbali: IB; Done. Next stop, Party Island.

Bayan Shaheen: There is no space enough to write about my last two years in this school, but, in short I will miss it <3

Saif Hudhud: happiness, love, life, support, and appreciation are summed up in one word... “friendship”

David Qobti: live everyday as if it was your last.

Ehab Kadoura: Leaving school is a big change, change is a good thing as long you STAY TRUE. Ahmad Al Nasser: Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind. Joud Ahmad: They say graduation is not the end; it is the beginning. I have waited anxiously my whole life for the day when I’d hold the key to my future, yet surprisingly now I’m not so eager. We are about to lead separate lives, and hopefully succeed. What is ahead of us is vague, but what is evident, is the times we are going to reminisce about our school years....

and run and climb and dance; one cannot fly into flying. I do believe that great results come from careful planning. The ambitious goals are powered by initiatives and productivity. And the foundation of achievement lies in the will to be the best, since the difference between a successful person and

others is not a lack of strength, not a lack of knowledge, but rather in a lack of will. Mashrek raised me on the fact that as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others. Through my life I wondered if I aim for perfection, however, I realized that I aim for success, not perfection because I’ll never give up on my right to be wrong, because then I will lose the ability to learn new

During the first years of high school, my future ambitions and goals were not yet clearly

defined like any other teenager, but as the days passed by my interests began to shape my future and my dreams. What my parents taught me that the choices we make dedicate the life we reach and that was my motive to take advantage of all available opportunities I face. As I matured, I began to realize the full importance that I was master of my own destiny, that I was responsible for my actions, and that only I could prepare my path to a successful future. With this in mind, I began to apply myself, and I could see that I was making a difference. Through the past twelve years I had spent in Mashrek, I had learned that he who would learn to fly one day must first learn to stand and walk

things and move forward with my life. Graduates, I hope your dreams take you to the corners of your smiles, to the highest of your hopes, to the windows of your opportunities, and to the most special places your heart has ever known.

To celebrate their last year in school , the student council has arranged a farewell

party for the twelfth graders. The party was simply amazing . the theme was Hawaiian. The colorful decorations and the tropical costumes made the party more interesting. The students of the 12th grade were also given party favors to remember their enriching journey in school. The graduates watched a small presentation at the end of the party that presented their best memories in their two senior years.
