Review of Austr alia n Standards. To keep abreast of progress in industry, Australian Standards are subject to periodic review and are kept up to date by the issue of amendments or new editions as necessary. It isimportant t herefore t hat Standards users ensure that they are i n possession of t he latest edition, and anyamendments thereto.Full details of all Australian Standards and related publications will be found in the Standards AustraliaCatalogue of Publications; t his information is supplemented each month by t he magazine The AustralianStandard, which subscribing members receive, and which gives details of new publications, new editionsand amendments, and of withdrawn Standards.Suggestions for improvements to Australian Standards, addressed to the head office of Standards Australia,

are welcomed. Notification of any inaccuracy or ambiguity found in an Australian Standard should be madewithout delay in order that the matter may be investigated and appropriate action taken.

    1 Scope

This International Standard specifies the characteristicsof 12,7 mm (0,5 in) wide magnetic tape with reel, toenable magnetic and mechanical interchangeability ofsuch tape between information processing systems.

This International Standard applies solely to magnetictape or digital recording using the method of recordingat 32 ftpmm and 356 ftpmm (800 ftpi and 9 042 ftpi) orthe phase-encoded method of recording at 126 ftpmm(3 200 ftpi) in which the direction of magnetization isnominally longitudinal.

NOTE 1 Some numeric values in t he SI and/or Imperialmeasurement system in this International Standard have beenrounded off and therefore are consistent with, but not exactlyequal to, each other. Either system may be used, but the twoshould be neither intermixed nor re converted. The originaldesign was made using the Imperial measurement system.
