environmental protection and the well being ofemployees, the community and civil society ingeneral, both now and in the future throughwhich the organizations assure good will

among their stake holders The concept of social responsibility amongbusinessmen, particularly in India, is not newand can high mosques, large dharmshalas andgreat education institution. Indian literature isfull of incidents when businessmen have goneout of the way to help extract king andsocieties out of crises. Many Indian businessesare known for staying one step ahead of theGovernment, as far as the welfare ofemployees and societies is concerned.

Till the late twentieth century, the mission ofbusiness environment being characterized by

various developments including the shift ofpower from capital to knowledge ,increasedlevels of literacy and the shrinking ofgeographical boundaries due to faster meansof travel and communication, people are, byand large, becoming conscious of theirrights ,which has led to a rise in the

expectations of society from business. The ofnarrated success stories of middle or lowerincome individuals turning into billionaireshave generated a lot of excitement and peopleat large expect business organizations to treat

Whereas firms oncemight have been able to prosper by concerningthemselves almost exclusively with financialresults, most now find it at least prudent andmany are finding it directly valuable-to manage

a wider array of the impacts that they generate(or can influence), from environmentalconditions to employee health and safety tosocial conditions like the quality of publiceducation .How can boards best organizethemselves and act so as to add perspectiveand value in these matters? First, they must

develop the capacity to examine and evaluateindividual CSR-oriented actions a process thatrequires both an understanding of themotivation behind them and an assessment oftheir impact on society and on the firm.Second, they need to ensure that the firmsCSR activities constitute a coherent and

effective CSR strategy. Third, they have to seeto it that their firms CSR strategy and decision-making are integrated into the companysoverall strategy.

    2;-Corporate social responsibility

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is thevoluntary role and contribution of the businesscommunity towards a better social andenvironmental development, apart from theirinvestment to organizational development. CSRis generally seen as the business contribution

to sustainable development which has beendefined as "development that meets the needsof the present without compromising the abilityof future generations to meet their own needs",and is generally understood as focusing on howto achieve the integration of economic, environmental, and social imperatives.

Ideally, CSR policy would function as a built-in,self-regulating mechanism whereby businesswould monitor and ensure their adherence tolaw, ethical,

Standards, and international norms. Businesswould embrace responsibility for the impact oftheir activities on the environment, consumers, employees, communities, stakeholders and allother members of the public sphere.

    3;-DEFINITION OF CORPORATE SOCIAL

    RESPONSIBILITY

Corporate social responsibility is a form ofcorporate self-regulation integrated into abusiness model. CSR policy functions as a built-in, self-regulating mechanism wherebybusiness monitors and ensures its activecompliance with the spirit of the law, ethicalstandards, and international norms. The goal ofCSR is to embrace responsibility for thecompany's actions and encourage a positiveimpact through its activities on theenvironment, consumers, employees, communities, stakeholders and all othermembers of the public sphere. Furthermore,CSR-focused businesses would proactivelypromote the public interest by encouragingcommunity growth and development, andvoluntarily eliminating practices that harm thepublic sphere, regardless of legality. CSR is thedeliberate inclusion of public interest intocorporate decision-making, and the honoring ofa triple bottom line: people, planet, profit.

The "corporate social responsibility" came in tocommon use in the early 1970s, after manymultinational corporations formed. The termstakeholder, meaning those on whom an

organization's activities have an impact, wasused to describe corporate owners beyondshareholders as a result of an influential bookby R. Edward Freeman, Strategic management

a stakeholder approach in 1984. Proponentsargue that corporations make more long termprofits by operating with a perspective, whilecritics argue that CSR distracts from theeconomic role of businesses. Others argue CSRis merely window-dressing, or an attempt topre-empt the role of governments as a

    watchdog over powerful multinationalcorporations.

Thus CSR needs to be looked at in termsresponsibility to individuals and groups to theirrespectively assigned roles within institutionsat the micro level; the responsibility of the

institutions as a whole to its stakeholders-staff, customers, shareholders, community, country of operation etc.

    4;-WHAT IS CSR?

"CSR is a set of management practices thatensure the company minimizes the negativeimpacts of its operations on the society whilemaximizing its positive impacts."

Corporate sector has a major role to play in adeveloping country like ours. However majorityof the companies have a limited or myopicapproach to corporate social responsibility.

CSR is about improving the general livingstandards of the community, raisingeducational standards and creating a positiveimpact on society. Usually CSR concentrates onthe activities that typically address the aspectsof a firm's behavior with respect to such keyelements as; health and safety, environmental

protection, human rights, human resourcemanagement practices, corporate governance, community development, consumer protection, labor protection, supplier relations, businessethics, and stakeholder rights.

Many European companies, on the other hand, see philanthropy and CSR as one in the same. What the companies do with their money is asimportant as how they make it. We added onepara to the intro about CSR, but really feel thatthe first para should come out -- CSR goes farbeyond simple stakeholder dialogue and this

needs to be reflected more forcefully. The "Attention Diversion" paragraph is one-sided commentary masquerading as objectivedescription - it makes assumptions about why

5 ;- SOCIAL AWARENESS AND EDUCATION

The role among corporate stakeholders to work

collectively to pressure corporations ischanging. Shareholders and investorsthemselves, through socially responsibleinvesting are exerting pressure on corporationsto behave responsibly. Non-governmentalorganizations are also taking an increasingrole, leveraging the power of the media and

the Internet to increase their scrutiny andcollective activism around corporate behavior. Through education and dialogue, thedevelopment of community in holding

responsibility is proposed as a newmanagement tool and not as a fashionableconcept. Furthermore, the advantages andlimitations of corporate social responsibility willbe analyzed in order to define a managementmodel for achieving responsibility amongorganizations. Finally, the model limitations are

presented, both in the verbal and themathematical formalizations.

    RECOMMENDATION

We visited twenty companies in Pune. We

collected Information about their CSRinvestment. Mostly research has beenconducted in the small and mediumcompanies, in many different aspects such asbenefit with CSR, its financial implementationprocess. This is a matter that becomes moreimportant in the todays society. We wanted to

focus our study in small and medium sizedenterprises to see how they can take part inthe CSR implementation. In this survey wecollected primary data from the companies.Primary data we have collected face to faceinterview and telephone. Many companies arecontributing in CSR different sectors like

Education, Public health, Environment, sportsand social investment. Out of 20 companies 12companies are contributing in CSR and 8 arenot contributing in CSR. Their percentage is60% and 40% respectively.

If remaining 40% companies will start

contributing in CSR then percentage will beincreased.
