PRODUCT MIX

Hot rolled flat products

Producing quality carbon steel coils. Built in the early 1990s, it is a very modern industrial works, the first example in Europe of a mini-mill for flat rolled steel.Using the innovative (and patented) ISP – In-line Strip Production technology, the most advanced of the modern compact technologies, production volumes amount to over one million tpy of black, pickled and galvanised coils; some final processing operations are carried out at its own service centre in Corbetta (Milan).

Precision stainless steel

Set up in the early 1990s and specialised in the precision cold rolling of ultrathin stainless steel strip down to gauges below 0,1 mm. It is the only producer on the domestic market in this sector and operates in a niche(nicchia) market with annual volumes of 16,000 tonnes of which about 70% is exported.

Welded carbon steel tubes

Built in the early 1970s and from the start equipped with avant-garde plants. With volumes of 350,000 tonnes, highly oriented towards quality and special products using coils from Acciaieria Arvedi, it holds important positions on the domestic and European markets.

Welded stainless steel tubes

Historically the first of the group’s companies set up in the early 1960s. It is specialised in tubes for quality applications which meet rigorous international standards, with production volumes of over 45,000 tonnes of which over 75% is exported.

ACCIAIERIA ARVEDI

SUMMARY

It is the most recent of the Arvedi Group’s companies and alone represents over 50% of the entire Group’s turnover(fatturato).

Acciaieria Arvedi, offices and works

It is Europe’s first and the world’s second mini-mill for flat rolled(laminati d’acciaio) steel production.

The production process, based on the innovative ISP (In-line Strip Production) technology, allows the liquid steel from the melt shop to be transformed into best quality ultra-thin gauge(spessore) hot rolled coils in a single, extremely compact cycle (“…in un unico ciclo, estremamente compatto di trasformare l'acciaio liquido, elaborato in acciaieria, in coils laminati a caldo della migliore qualità ed in spessori ultrasottili...”).

Page 3: Arvedi Group

It is a highly modern industrial complex due to its technological, environmental and ergonomic concepts and can be defined as a new way of producing steel.

With its particular plants and equipment special products can be manufactured in a flexible and economic way, making this the strong point of the works.

Hot rolled coil can be further finished through pickling(decappaggio) and galvanising(zincatura) which, together with the cutting lines, process a considerable share of production providing a fast service for end users.

At its Cremona works Acciaieria Arvedi produces black, pickled and galvanised coils with strip cutting services, while at its Corbetta works (near Milan), equipped as a service centre, more capillary activities are carried out.

Production is oriented towards special steels (in particular high strength and Dual Phase) and thin and ultra-thin gauges which can substitute cold rolled products for many applications.

PRODUCTION DEVELOPMENT

Acciaieria Arvedi started up in 1992 as the prototype of a new steelmaking model for steel coil(lamiera) production, capable of producing thin and quality materials in small lots at competitive costs and with highly flexible production.

The production cycle starts with the casting(colaggio) of a thin slab( bramma, 75 mm) directly reduced with a liquid core to a thickness of 55 mm and fed(alimentata) in-line to a roughing mill(laminatoio sbozzatore) which reduces it to a very thin gauge (12.5 mm).

Direct connection of casting and rolling

This first process phase, together with a limited heating phase (Δ≈200°C) achieved through an induction furnace(forno ad induzione), differentiates Arvedi technology from other thin slab

Page 4: Arvedi Group

technologies and characterises the high product quality and the particular attitude to the production of high strength thermo-mechanical thin gauge (1 mm) steel grades.

In 1995, once the main phase of the process technology development was finished, the project’s initial production targets were exceeded and the production structure was progressively improved through an increase in melt shop capacity and the installation in 1997 of the fifth rolling stand(quinta gabbia laminatoio finitore) in the finishing mill.

Finishing mill

1998 saw the start-up of the pickling plant with in-line skinpass, expressly studied for processing thin gauges (1 – 1.2 mm) which in the meantime have become part of normal production for the steelworks.

Pickling

2000 saw a further increase in melt shop capacity with a modification to the melting furnace and the installation of a second ladle furnace(forno siviera) for liquid steel refining.

In 2002 the coil galvanising plant, specifically studied for special products and able to process high strength and dual phase steels, came on line.

Galvanising

Page 5: Arvedi Group

Still in 2002 started strip cutting activities with the installation of two slitters, an activity till then carried out exclusively by its subsidiary CSS in Corbetta.

In the course of 2004 the continuous casting and pre-rolling machine was modified in order to raise productivity and increase it to about 1,3 million tpy.

Over the years the production range has been completed both as regards steel grades and gauges.

Production characteristics can be summed up both in the complete range of steels produced, from soft steels suitable for forming and section welding, to medium/high carbon construction and heat treatment steels, to high strength microalloyed steels, boron steels for quenching and hardening and most recently dual phase steels. It is also possible to produce gauges at maximum table width (1300 mm), giving a range of characteristics (gauge, width and steel grade) that are unique when compared with the best of steel producers worldwide.

PRODUCTION STRUCTURE

View of the ISP line

The production plants of the Cremona works are composed of:

melt shop, equipped with an electric arc furnace for melting the scrap(rottame), 2 ladle furnaces (2 forni siviera) for secondary metallurgy and an adjacent covered scrap yard (stoccaggio rottame) for storage of raw materials;

casting and rolling plant using ISP technology which, in a single cycle, transforms the liquid steel into steel coils;

coil pickling line(linea decappaggio); hot dip galvanising (zincatura a caldo) of the pickled coils in a molten zinc bath; two longitudinal cutting lines (slitters) for cutting coils into strips; service plants (electrical substation with a 380KV connection to the primary network, the

melt shop’s fumes treatment plant, cooling and recirculation plant for process water and the melt shop’s fumes collection and treatment plant).

The Cremona works occupies an area of 460000 mq , of which 72000 mq are covered by industrial buildings and 3200 mq by accessory and service buildings.

It has incorporated the company CSS, a service centre in Corbetta (Milan) occupying an area of 67500 mq , of which 24,400 m2 are covered, and where certain types of processing, such as coil slitting and flattening, are carried out on 7 specialised lines to obtain strip and plate.

PRODUCTION PROCESS

Production process originates with the raw material composed of steel scrap for charging, together with melting substances (sostanze fondenti, mainly lime), the electric arc furnace where, melting occurs through the effect of the heat produced by the electric arc furnace supplied through a three-phase system of graphite electrodes and by oxy-methane burners(bruciatori).

The liquid steel produced in this way is cast into large containers, called casting ladles(siviere), and sent to stations called “ladle furnaces” (forno siviera)where the metallurgical operations are carried out; these consist in the elimination of non-metallic impurities and in the addition of small percentages of other metals depending on the analysis required by the type of steel being produced.

The melting and casting operation is repeated about 30 times in the course of 24 hours and each heat corresponds to about 120 tonnes of liquid steel.

The casting ladles(forni siviera) are subsequently taken from the “ladle furnaces” to the ISP plant which, in a single sequence and without interruption, transforms the liquid steel into coils(rotoli), the finished product.

The steel is fed to the plant, where it is first solidified into a continuous thin slab(nastro, thickness 55 mm) and in sequence pre-rolled and rolled until thickness is reduced to values between 1 and 10 mm.

Gauges of the thin slab to the finished coil

During this sequence the steel temperature never drops below 950°C, much higher than that reached in plants using conventional techniques which need to have recourse to slab heating for the

Page 10: Arvedi Group

final rolling(laminazione finale); for this reason the ISP plant achieves considerable energy saving, which can be evaluated as the equivalent of 22 tonnes of oil every 1000 tonnes of coils produced, and therefore a considerable advantage for the environment(ambientale).

Over 75% of the hot rolled coils obtained are subsequently sent to two recently built processing plants – picking(decappaggio) and hot galvanising.

Company output is therefore composed of hot rolled black(acciaio al carbonio neri a caldo), pickled and galvanised coils.

ARINOX

Page 14: Arvedi Group

In the course of 2008 Arinox set up new 1270 mm wide production lines composed of a 20-hi rolling mill(laminatoio a 20 rulli), a BA annealing plant(impianto di ricottura) equipped with an in-line levelling plant(spianatrice in linea), cutting and packing lines.

Arinox, the only Italian producer in the precision strip sector(nastro di precisione), employs a workforce of over 200 working 21 shifts weekly in a continuous cycle, with a production capacity of over 50,000 tonnes per year. Arinox currently exports over 70% of its output, mainly to Europe but also to America and the Far and Middle East.

DEVELOPMENT

Arinox in Sestri Levante is a market leader and the only Italian producer of precision rolled stainless steel strip for the automotive, mechanical and plant engineering industries and for electronics applications.

With its cold rolling(laminazione a freddo), bright annealing(ricottura brillante) and innovative SUT® (Surface Ultracleaning Treatment) line, its levelling and many precision cutting lines(“…laminazione a freddo, di ricottura brillante, l’innovativa linea SUT, la linea di spianatura e le molteplici linee di taglio di precisione…”), the Sestri Levante production unit can respond to the most diverse requirements dictated by the constant evolution of international markets with even tailor-made ideas and solutions.

In 2007 an investment programme was launched which saw the start-up the following year of the new 1270 mm wide production plants.

The production plants are now composed of 3 precision cold rolling mills(laminatoi a freddo di precisione), 3 bright annealing lines(linee di ricottura brillante) with 2 tension levellers(spianatrici in tensione) which guarantee production of stainless steel strip of excellent quality and unparalleled dimensional precision. The broad(gamma) production range, which extends to a width of 1250 mm and gauges down to 0,05 mm and minimum widths of 2,5 mm, makes the Sestri Levante works extremely competitive and specialised.

The range of precision strip finishings is complete and highly specialised. The strip can be annealed or undergo calibrated strain hardening(incrudimento calibrato) depending on the customer's preference, with the possibility of choosing from an extremely wide mechanical and dimensional range on the basis of effective requirements.

The SUT® (Surface Ultracleaning Treatment) line ensures unequalled performance on materials intended for the drawing/stamping market.

Arinox is equipped with structures downstream and upstream of the production plants(impianti a valle e a monte) able to control and guarantee raw material quality and finished product quality after levelling and cutting.

The many slitting lines(linee di taglio longitudinale) carry out extremely high precision cut-to-length operations with maximum operational flexibility. Two fully automated packing lines downstream from the transformation cycle complete operations.

SUT - SURFACE ULTRACLEANING TREATMENT

Page 15: Arvedi Group

The hot rolling process and impurities present in the hydrogen used as a protective gas in the bright annealing furnaces can generate some extremely hard micro-particles on the surface of the precision strip. These can cause problems during the subsequent drawing(stampaggio) stages, interfering with the smooth passage of material through the drawer(stampo), reducing the average working life of the tools used to work the strip.

Arinox has developed a definitive solution to these problems, producing strip through an exclusive process.

SUT® treatment line

This electrochemical process enables the removal of the top surface layers from the material, producing a totally clean, pollutant-free(esente da inquinanti) surface.

SUT® technology is therefore suitable for deep drawing applications, and in any case for all applications requiring low tool wear (bassa usura utensili).

The SUT® treatment applied to precision stainless strip is produced exclusively by Arinox for its customers and allows:

a significant increase in tool life; a significant rise in productivity.

Page 16: Arvedi Group

The SUT® process can be applied to all alloys and the treatment’s effectiveness is completed with the respect of other important requirements which characterise the production of precision stainless strip for drawing/stamping:

Controlled roughness and total absence of surface defects; High edge quality to reduce friction against running guides; A dedicated production cycle for the various product types.

The technological standards at the Arinox works are the highest currently available.

All the machines are of modern design and recent installation: no other mill at our level can boast of such a modern and efficient range of plant.

Of course, all this translates into a competitive advantage for our customers in terms of quality and flexibility.

The three precision rollers form the heart of the works. They are fully automated and can guarantee extremely close thickness tolerances, ensuring stable and consistent mechanical characteristics throughout the whole strip.

The continuous annealing furnaces (forni di ricottura continua) operate in a controlled atmosphere of 100% hydrogen: this guarantees optimal thermal treatment, protecting the surface quality of the strip during the annealing process (B.A. - Bright Annealing).

The tension leveller prepares the strip for the precision cutting lines – flatness is a crucial factor in the achievement of highly accurate precision cutting.

Tension leveller.

The SUT® line, based on technology developed by Arinox in collaboration with highly respected research institutes and Italian universities, deserves particular attention.

This technology is designed for the production of materials for deep drawing and has revolutionised the stainless steel precision strip market for drawing as a result of the extraordinary performances our customers have been able to achieve with material treated with the SUT® process.
