    1) Arunella; For a better future generation

Arunella, organized by the Engineering Students Union of Faculty of Engineering,

University of Peradeniya is far beyond a common charity program. Since the slightest

beginning, it has become the heartbeat of a group of young engineering undergraduates,

who had the ambition to serve the countrys future with an educational aid.

As the ESU, we believe that the poverty should not be an obstacle to generate new ideas

and create a great person for the betterment of the society. Also we consider that the

greatest service a man can ever do is serve for the betterment of the society. If

that great humanity is reflected through our effort, that is the only expectation of us as

the Engineering students in University of Peradeniya. We would like to humbly remind

that, we are not only just engineers who know only strength of materials, but also

humanists who know the strength of the sweats of people.

Twilights of the Arunella program fell in to the Faculty of Engineering in 2000, when

an idea was created to form a fund to provide economical support for the

undergraduates of the Faculty of Engineering, for those who were suffering from

economical deprivations. Over the years this program sprouted step by step and was

spread over various directions to enlighten not only the lives of faculty undergraduates,

but also of the students from various parts of the country who are following school

    education.

Arunella program is consisted with three phases, namely

Arunella Seminar Series Arunella Social Project Arunella Scholarship Program

    1.1 Arunella Seminar Series

The main objective of the Arunella seminar series is to aid the G.C.E Ordinary Level

(O/Ls) students in rural areas, who have difficulties in learning mathematics and science

subjects due to the sacristy of teachers and other facilities. There is no doubt GCE

Ordinary level exam level is the first gateway to the higher education. Therefore it is a

timely need to help those less privileged students to continue the education while not

falling behind due to any political or socio-economic reason. Fortunately, the

Engineering Students Union who initiated the Arunella program saw this and

formulated an effective program to fulfil that gap in the Sri Lankan education system as

    much as they can.

Under the Arunella seminar program, the students of the Faculty of Engineering visit

such school students in weekends and conducts tutorial and theoretical seminars

according to the government syllabus. Every year, students from various schools

gathered in number of centres in all over the country, to participate in this seminar

    program.

1.3 Arunella Scholarship Program The main purpose of the Arunella scholarship program is to support economically

deprived undergraduates of the Faculty of Engineering. For the past twelve years, more

than 350 Engineering undergraduates were granted with Arunella scholarships.

Arunella Scholarship fund is strengthened by,

The scholarships which are given by the employers of public and private sectors in

Sri Lanka, social service organizations and the engineering graduates of the faculty.

The profit gained by selling T-shirts, pens, umbrellas, bags embedded with

    Arunella logo.

The profit gained through the activities organized by the Engineering Students

    Union such as film festivals.

    2) Arunella O/L Seminar Series 2012 Applications were called from a newspaper advertisement on beginning of every year.

From over 200 applications Arunella O/L seminar series was conducted and coordinated at

43 less facilitated schools island wide in 2012.

    2.1 Selection Process

Candidate schools were chosen as by following means,

    Responses to the newspaper advertisement

    Prior Requests

    Previous Centres

    Special Requirements

Seminar conducting centres are chosen according to following parameters

    Past O/L Results

    Number of students

    Availability of teachers and resources

Willingness of the staff and the parents

    2.2 Conducting Subjects

Arunella seminar series is mainly focused in following subjects,

    Mathematics

    Science

    English

Engineering undergraduates have gained much exposure with these subjects and also the

same subjects have been the least scoring subjects in O/Ls. So it is effective in conducting

the above subjects so these subjects will help the school students to improve their academic

    qualifications.

The teaching aids such as tutorials, model papers are prepared and printed by the

engineering students themselves with a good knowledge and understanding about the

    subjects syllabus.

    2.3 Conducting Method

The seminar series usually begins in the mid of each year and continues till the G.C.E O/L

exam. Engineering students travel to the selected schools every weekend no matter how far

the schools are located and how hard it is to get there.

On the first day students academic level is evaluated through a test paper which covers

from very basics. Based on the performance, the students are categorized and the seminar

series is conducted in accordance with the scores. Continuous evaluation and mock exams

are conducted throughout the program to ensure the effectiveness of the program.

Parental meetings are arranged time to time to discuss the students performance.

Ambalakanda Maha Vidyalaya is situated in Mawanella educational zone in Kegalle

district. It is about 17km away from the Mawanella town, if anyone wants to reach there,

only one bus works from Mawanella to Ambalakanda, unless it is needed to go to

Aranayake(13km from Mawanella) & then a bus should be taken to ambalakanda(4km

    from Aranayake).

In the present day 341 students are learning in the school. Although the toilets are available

there is no water supply system to the school.
