The Sedona Arts Center has partnered with the Sedona Culture Collaborative to create special events associated with our Sedona Plein Air Festival this year. Three distinct events have emerged through an exploration of connection to our Native American legacy.

• Oct 20, 4 – 7pm: Ed Wade will be hosting a ceramic pit-firing and presentation of his collection of Native pottery. This event will include wine, fine dining and fascinating conversation. Twenty pit-fired vessels will be raffled to attending guests.

• Oct 24, 9 – noon: A mini-tour originating at the Sedona Arts Center will jour-ney to Montezuma’s Well where guests will meet a representative from the Yavapai tribe and four artists participating in the Festival. The theme of creation will be explored as the artists talk about how they composed their paintings at the Well and the Yavapai speaker tells the story of this sacred place from the tribe’s perspective.

• Oct 24, 4 – 7pm: Thirty Festival artists will present works they have painted at select Native American legacy sites at the Mary D. Fisher theatre. Tony Abeyta will present awards and give a talk on “Ancient Questions and the New Face of Native American Painting.” A special painting that Tony creates in Sedona will be presented for Silent Auction.

The Sedona Culture Collaborative is a new organization creating immersive cultural events to enhance Sedona’s reputation on the national scene as a unique learning

environment.

Another exciting dimension in programming is the Sedona Art Retreats (see page 4). This interdisciplinary model of art experience has the magic of an enlivened connection between each piece of the program. This connection is experienced differently by each participant. We have done a number of these retreats in the spring semester and the testimonials from participants are unlike anything I have seen before. This kind of learning inspires at a unique and personal level.

That is, after all, where art originates.

Art is self discovery! The Sedona Art Retreat guides you into a world of creative possibilities. Sedona is known for three things: its beautiful landscape, its art-colony atmosphere and as a place for spiritual discovery. The Sedona Arts Center has wrapped these elements into a unique package where art and self discovery fuse to create a life-changing experience.


Field Expeditions

Kathryn Stats is one of the most sought after instructors in plein air painting. She is known for the beautiful color and brushwork that bring her stunning compositions to life. We will focus first on the selection of subject, design within our formats and blocking in value pattern; then we’ll explore color combinations and how they can be used to create the effect of aerial or atmospheric perspective to create a convincing sense of depth. Kathryn will demonstrate numerous times during this five-day workshop. On one of these occasions she will use a previously started piece to focus on the finishing process.

Taught by Kevin Macpherson and hosted by the Friends School of San Francisco, this workshop will be about capturing in paint the wonder of the San Francisco urban landscape. Students will spend three days working with San Francisco street scenes. Kevin will coach students on best prac-tices for capturing imagery with the camera and translating those images into quality painting experiences. Demonstration and individual consultation will help students absorb lessons to be applied for years to come. The final two days you will have a portrature option with a live model on the Chinatown theme.


Patti Mollica’s workshop will be about capturing in paint the unexpected beauty of light and form in New York City. Your digital photographs taken on the streets and in the parks and museums of the city will be printed for reference when painting. Patti will encourage students to develop multiple paintings during the five-day workshop. On the last two days, students are invited to explore a technique in representational collage using acrylics and papers to echo the vibrancy of city life with its surprising juxtapositions.

This unique 10-day, 220-mile river journey through the Grand Canyon has been custom designed to create a once-in-a-life-time plein air painting experience. You will capture afternoon and morning light in camp, then travel by boat to the next des-tination midday. Each camp is selected for its exquisite views. There will be two layovers at exceptional sites. Gregory Hull will provide instruction in the form of demonstrations, group and individual critiques, and personal guidance in 6 three-hour ses-sions during the trip. Learn the secrets of creating high performance art with Prismacolor Art Pencils. Award-winning artist and teacher Richard Drayton will guide students through thorough step-by-step techniques that will result in rich blended color and exciting composition and design. Participants may use their own subject matter or the photographic references provided by the instructor.

In this workshop the focus is on color—creating rich, luminous, glowing color. There are many tricks to recreating vibrant color, most of them surprisingly simple. You will learn how to work within your palette to achieve the glow you want. Learn the basics of how to work with water and pigment to create those wonderful watery effects: wet into wet, scumbling, glazing and more.

This comprehensive encaustic workshop provides an introduction to painting with hot pigmented wax. Artists with back-grounds in almost any medium will find this workshop to be an exciting way to expand their visual vocabulary. Encaustic can submerge through layering, reveal through scraping back and offer surfaces from glassy smooth to heavily textured. Materials sponsored by R & F Paints.

Libby teaches a process of combining sketches, color and words to make unique personal compositions that capture the moments and memories in your life. Exercises that unify the left and right brain are applied to recording everyday life, life changing events, travels and things remembered. Learn to approach a challenge creatively, rearrange its form and dispel its energy.


Taught with patience, humor and the practical goal that you will be able to enjoy drawing for the rest of your life, this course is designed for absolute beginners and those who wish to refresh their drawing skills. Guiding you toward your own personal style, the class explores five key techniques of drawing and different ways they can be creatively combined.


The overall objective of this workshop is to explore the vast range and flexibility of watercolor and to put emotion and conviction into painting by exploring, experimenting and developing the creativity of each individual. Tom likes to put fun into the process of painting, along with enthusiasm and new techniques that make any level of painter feel welcome!

Paper Painting is an intense workshop in which students are taught a unique figurative collage technique. Students will learn to create a beautiful palette of colors with various papers and createan under-painting and collage for a final finish. Working with photographic reference, students will explore drawing, composition, proportion, value, color and collage application.


Learn to create powerhouse watercolors using your own photo references. Are you tired of struggling with your photos and being disappointed with your watercolor results? Painting from life is certainly the best teacher for the effects of light and color. But when that’s not possible, many artists turn to their photo references. Don’t get trapped into “reporting” what the photo is dictating, detail by detail.


Through drawing, collage and painting on paper, students will be guided through an exciting hands-on process of learning the key lesson of modern art—activating the negative space—to create images that are both representational and dynamically abstract. One day of intensive drawing from still-life and one day of collage will then lead to two days of working with a model.

Is getting started scary? Does carrying everything keep you from painting or sketching? Whether you’re a raw beginner or a professional, Pocket Sketching is for you. The format is only 4 x 6 inches and can go anywhere. When you’re working, everything fits in your “personal space.” In a café, on the subway, on a horse, who’s to notice but you? Jan’s experience and enthusiasm create an atmosphere of spontaneity inspiring new directions and discovery through innovative combinations of design and materials. We get surprising results in abstract painting by combining aggressive textures and unusual mediums with various “raw” materials. The layering method yields a magnetism that is particular to mixed media.

R&F Pigment Sticks are oil paint with just enough wax added for the paint to be molded into stick form. They allow the artist to draw or paint onto a surface with freedom and directness. This workshop introduces you to pigment sticks and allows you to explore a wide variety of mark making, creating rich layered surfaces. Learn techniques to heighten and enhance your own visual language.

This three-day workshop for all levels focuses on painting outdoors. Artists will learn to quickly gather the visual information needed to complete a painting in the field. Learning how to simplify a landscape and interpret color relationships will be a primary goal of this workshop, but other fundamental concepts will also be discussed.

We will spend an enjoyable and intense weekend painting on site in the Sedona landscape one day and in the studio the next. By revisiting the same subject in these two different environments we will learn the advantages of both studio and plein air painting and how to combine them effectively.


Students will paint en plein air in and around beautiful Sedona for as much time as nature and weather permit. The last 1½ days will be spent developing larger or more detailed works out of the plein-air studies and photo references. This class is open to all levels but best suited to those students with at least some experience painting en plein air.


Joshua Been will dispel the mystery of creating effective illusions in the context of plein air painting. Through demonstrations and one–on–one attention, you will learn to comprehend the relationships between values, shapes, edges and textures. Through this four-pronged approach, you will learn to organize visual information and build the illusion of space and light.


This five-hour afternoon workshop will follow the free lecture-demonstration given in the morning on color, space, pigment history and color palettes. This workshop is taught by Scott Gellatly, product manager for Gamblin Artist’s Colors. Scott consults with painters worldwide on technical issues and is involved in developing and testing all Gamblin oil colors and mediums.


This exciting workshop includes lectures and demonstrations, individual painting time and lots of one-on-one instruction as well as personal and group critiques to promote your progress. Lori will motivate you to new understanding, teach you to reap the benefits of painting outdoors and help you think, see, plan and paint your subjects using a modern impressionist approach.

This three-day workshop follows right on the heels of the 9th Annual Sedona Plein Air Festival. Jim is one of the thirty invited artists from around the country painting the Sedona landscape October 19–26. The workshop is for all levels and will be focused on painting outdoors from life. Demonstration and individual attention will be assured with a maximum enrollment of 10 students.


Learn to capture the beauty of light! Betty Carr teaches students to accurately portray the effect of light on any subject, both in oil and in watercolor. Students may work in either medium or both to explore a variety of locations in beautiful Sedona. This weeklong workshop begins directly following the 9th Annual Sedona Plein Air Festival.


This is a high-energy workshop concen-trating on the fundamentals of plein air painting. By working on the basics—drawing, values, edge control, composi-tion and paint handling—you will start building confident brushwork and make quicker decisions, forcing you to rely more on instincts whether in the studio or painting en plein air.

A rock solid understanding of the structure and features of the head and neck are an essential foundation in the developing artist’s growth as a figurative sculptor. The subtleties of the human form are so complex that one MUST educate the eye to the underlying structure that creates visible form. This workshop is the nuts-and-bolts approach to sculpting that you’ve been looking for!

sculpture | all levels tuition: $400

This workshop will explore figurative sculpture in depth and is appropriate for beginning or advanced sculptors. Students will be using oil base clay over a pre-made armature. We will start with gestures and the nude, then arrive at our final pose and complete our sculpture of a Native American model in native dress.


In this five-day workshop, open to beginners and professionals, we will sculpt a life-sized human head from clay. Afterwards, the head may be expanded to a torso or full figure. In my 30–plus years of teaching, from young children to elders over 80, I have never found anyone who could not sculpt a good face, if they were willing to learn and do the work, step by step, regardless of whatever “talent” they may or may not possess. Many of my ex-students are selling professionals today, and several over 80 years old had not touched clay before.

I feel that sculpture is one of the most primal of the arts, and an artist’s ability in sculpture may benefit any of the other arts they choose to pursue.

Lorri’s three-day workshop will present participants with a new way of working with clay. Using fiberclay (regular ceramic clay with special fibers added to it), she teaches skills and techniques that encourage fragile and elongated forms that are often regarded as impossible to make and fire. The class will culminate in raku firing of your piece so that you will leave class with your finished sculpture!

Adobe Photoshop is a photographer’s best friend and this hands-on workshop is designed for photographers of any level who would like to broaden their understanding of this amazing program. Instruction will cover the digital work-flow using the three components of the program—Bridge, Camera Raw and Photo shop—and will focus on the importance of working in Raw.

There are no refunds after the 30-day cut-off date. • Field Expeditions: Each field expedition has its own payment and cancellation policy, which may be reviewed online or call for details.• Ongoing Weekly Classes are paid in full at the time of registra-tion. There is a 15% fee for cancellations up to 7 days before the first day of the class; no refunds are given after that date.

Cancellations must be in writing and received by the Sedona Arts Center before the 30-day cut-off date. Absolutely no refunds after the 30-day cut-off for any reason. Email cancellations are not valid unless confirmed. The Sedona Arts Center is not responsible for pro-viding make-up opportunities or issuing refunds, credits or trans-fers for sessions missed as a result of illness, emergency or other events beyond our control. Students will receive a full tuition refund only in the event that the Arts Center cancels a workshop.

We strongly urge students to purchase refundable airline tickets and travel insurance in case of workshop cancellations or other unfore-seen changes. The Arts Center is not responsible for non-refundable ticket purchases or lodging fees.

Travel By Air: The closest major airport is Phoenix Sky Harbor, approxi-mately 115 miles south of Sedona. Begin your creative adventure with a two-hour drive through the spectacular Sonoran Desert—a peaceful space of endless horizons. Car rentals are available at the airport, but if you would rather relax and enjoy the scenery, shuttles are available to deliver you right to your hotel door in Sedona. By Car: Sedona is located near the center of the state of Arizona, one hour south of Flagstaff, two hours north of Phoenix, five hours from Las Vegas and nine hours from Los Angeles.

Sedona residents and newcomers alike look to Sedona Arts Center for their introduction to and ongoing involvement in the arts. The School of the Arts programming is designed to reach out to all aspiring artists and students of all ages and levels of learning. Ongoing instruction is available in a variety of mediums. Taking classes on our campus in Uptown Sedona affords the oppor-tunity not only to explore the arts, but also to meet new neighbors and immerse yourself in the Sedona arts community. These classes have a membership discount and are offered weekly on an ongoing basis.

Our MissionThe Sedona Arts Center is a nonprofit educational institution dedicated to nurturing creative discovery, learning and sharing through arts education and artistic development.

Founded in 1958, the Sedona Arts Center has been the foundation of art education in Northern Arizona for more than half a century. It’s first (and current) home was in the Jordan family’s apple packing barn. A lot has changed since then. We’ve grown and expanded, but the Art Barn remains at the heart of the organization. As a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization we still work to fulfill the same mission:
