OnbehalfoftheBoardoftheArtspaceMackayFoundationitismyprivilegetopresentour2017-18annualreport.
TheArtspaceMackayFoundationisaseparate,independent,legalentitywithamissiontostrengthenfinancialsupportfortheArtspaceMackayregionalgallery,bydrivingphilanthropicfundraisingactivitiesthatwillresultinpartnershipswithindividuals,businessesandgovernment.TheFoundationwasestablishedtoraisefundsforArtspaceMackay,andensurethatartcontinuestobeavitalfeatureofthisgreatregionofQueensland.
AsChaironeofmymostpleasurabledutiesistothankourmajorsupportersfortheirgenerosity.Ahighlightthisyear,ArtspaceMackay’smaingallerynowhasthebackingofoneoftheQueenslandminingindustry’spremierengineeringfirms.TheFoundationwasdelightedtoannounceFIELDEngineershavesignedafive-yearpartnershipwiththeFoundationasthenewmaingallerynamingrightssponsor.OfficiallyannouncedatthelaunchoftheArtspaceexhibition,Primavera at 25: MCA Collecti on,February16.
FIELDEngineersGeneralManagerDavidHartigansaidengineeringandartwerecomplementary.“Engineeringisaboutcreativethinkingandlookingatsomethingfromdifferentanglesand
viewpoints–greatartandartistssharethosequalities,’’hesaid.“Weareexcitedaboutthisfive-yearpartnershipwithArtspaceMackayFoundationandlookforwardtoseeinglocalartsandcultureflourishinthattimethroughthegallery,andthisforusisanexcellentwaytocontribute”hesaid.TheFoundationsincerelythanksFIELDEngineersfortheirgenerosityandcommitmenttothecommunity.
Inmoregoodnews,theFoundationmadeadecisiontosubstantiallyincreasethe2018HandsOnBursary,awardedtoyoungcreativesfromtheMackayregion.Receivingasignificantboost,thebursaryincreasedfrom$1,000to$4,000inavailablefunding.TheBoardfeltthisfundinginjectionwouldcertainlygoalongwaytohelpingouruniversitystudentskickstarttheirfutureintheindustrythattheylove.Openingthedoortobiggeropportunitiesthatmighthaveotherwisebeenbeyondtheirfinancialmeans.
Itwasourpleasuretoawardthe2018receiptofthe$4,000HandsOnBursarytoaspiringyounggraphicdesignerLinneaFreeman.Arisingtalent,Linneahasapassionfordesigningforsocialchangeandsustainability,andreceivedherawardinaFebruarypresentationatArtspaceMackay.WecongratulateLinneaonherachievements,thankherfortravelingfromBrisbanetoreceiveheraward,andlookforwardtohearingmoreonhersuccessfulcareerpath.
OurloyalmembersjoinedusfortheAnnualGalleryMembersExhibitionPreviewLoungeeventinFebruary,intheFoodspacevenue.Anexclusivepreviewofthediverseandexciting2018ArtspaceMackayexhibitioncalendarofevents,presentedbyGalleryDirectorTraceyHeathwood.WeallenjoyedsomebubblyandVIPtreatmentintheintimatesurroundsofthemembers’lounge,whilelisteningtospecialguest,MeganRobson,MCAAssistantCurator,whopresented
afascinatinginsightintotheFebruaryexhibitionPrimavera at 25: MCA Collecti on.Thankyoutooursupportivebusinesspartnersforyourin-kinddonationstotheevent,andthecovetedmembersprize.
LargenumbersofGalleryMembersenjoyedourpreviewtoursofexhibitionsthisyear.Ahighlight,theinternationalexhibitionComing Into Fashion: A Century of Photography at Condé NastpresentedbyinternationalguestCuratorNathalieHerschdorfer,DirectoroftheMuseumofFineArts,LeLocle,Switzerland.Anunforgettabletouroftheseiconicimages.
Aspartofourcalendarofevents,oursupportcontinuedforbothemergingartists,andthe2018 LIBRIS AWARDS: The Australian Arti sts’ Book Prize.AgenuinehighlightfortheFoundationthisyear,awardingTheArtspaceMackayFoundationTertiaryAwardand$2,000non-acquisitiveprizetooutstandingBrisbane-basedartist,JennaLeeandherdelicatecopperplateetchingworkA plant in the wrong place2016.JennawasawardedattheofficialopeningeveninginAugust,adelightedandveryworthyrecipientofthisnationally-recognisedaward.
WeproudlycelebratedthearrivalofournewestacquisitionfortheMackayRegionalCouncilArtCollection.TheFoundationassistedthegallerywith$14,000infundingtowardsasignificantandhighlyvaluableacquisitionforArtspaceMackay.AcornerstoneworkbyacclaimedAustralianceramicistartistGwynHanssenPigott Sti ll life 1995.Aworkofthehighestcalibreandofmajorhistoricalsignificancetoourregion.
In2018,theFoundationhavealsocommitted$6,000infundingtoassistArtspaceMackaywiththecommissioningofanewcollaborativeartists’bookfortheCollectionbyAustralianartistsDaleHardingandOmarMusa.TheartworkcommissionisanopportunityforArtspaceMackaytoacquireaunique,one-off
artists’book,whichspecificallyrelatestoourregionandcommunity,andwillfeatureinArtspaceMackay’smajortouringexhibitionViolent Salt,whichopensinMackayinAugust2019,beforetouringthecountry.Allacquisitionsaremadepossibleduetocommunitysupport.Businessesandindividualshavedonatedgenerously,insupportofacquisitionsmadetotheMackayRegionalCouncilArtCollection.DonationstotheFoundationarefullytaxdeductible,andmakeasubstantialdifferencetothefutureofourcommunity’scollection.
Bignewsfor2018,artistsfromacrossthecountryhaveenteredinourmajorfundraisingevent,TheRayWhiteMackayCityArti culate: Postcard Exhibiti on & Competi ti onfundraisingevent.AfundraisinginitiativeoftheFoundationheldpreviouslyin2009&2011,thishugelysuccessfulartseventcombinesacompactcanvascompetition,exhibition,artsaleandauction,andwearereceivinggreatsponsorshipsupportfromthelocalbusinesscommunityandhundredsofentriesfromlocalartists.It’sagreatnightfortheartcommunityandagreatnetworkingandsocialopportunity,withover400guestssupportingthepreviousevent.Wehopetoseeyouallthere,showingyoursupportfortheartswithsomegood-naturedrivalrywhenthebiddingstartsonOctober19.
Ourloyalcoremembershipslowlygrows,andweaimtofocusonpromotiontoreachouttoawideraudience,seekingartloversofallagesinterestedinthearts,tobecomepartofthegalleryfamily.Withtheintroductionofonlinemembership,we’vestreamlinedtheprocesstomakeiteveneasiertojoinup,showyoursupport,andstartenjoyingthebenefitsofmembership.
ThisyearwefarewelledDirectorandChairBradleyShort,whosepassionforthegalleryandtheartsisundeniable.Bradley,asOwnerManagerofMackaybusinessMiltonPictureFramersand
MiltonHouseGallery,regretfullysteppeddownduetobusinesscommitments.AsastrongadvocateforArtspaceMackay,BradleyhasremainedactiveinanewroleassponsorfortheupcomingFoundationPostcardfundraisingevent.WelookforwardtoworkingwithBradleyinthiscapacityandwholeheartedlythankourformerChairforhisdedicationandleadershipoftheFoundationBoard.
Laterin2017ArtspaceMackayDirector,JulieSkate,tooktheopportunitytorelocatetoCanberraasChiefExecutiveOfficerofCanberraGlassworks,afterfifteenmonthsinMackaywithArtspaceMackay.WecongratulateJulieonthisnewrole,wishherwellinherfutureendeavours,andthankourretiringGalleryDirectorforhercontributionoverthepastyear.
WewelcomedthreenewmembersontotheBoardthisyear—SolicitorSamanthaSticklan,newlyappointedArtspaceMackayDirectorTraceyHeathwood,andmyselfasanewDirectorsteppinguptothepositionofChair.IamveryprivilegedtobetheChairandthankmyfellowDirectorsfortheirsupportofmynewrole.
IwouldespeciallyliketocongratulateTraceyHeathwoodonherappointment.Traceyworkswithintegrityandconsistencytocreateopportunitiesforpeoplefromallwalksoflifetoengagewiththearts,andtheFoundationisdelightedtohavetheopportunitytoworkalongsideTraceytowardsamomentousyearofgalleryachievementsunderherinspirationalleadership.
WithournewDirectorsonboard,wearefortunatetohavegainedexceptionalindividualswhobringawealthofexperience,andabilities.OurcombinedskillbasewillbeaneffectiveforceinguidingtheFoundationinsupportofArtspaceMackay’sfuturesuccess.
ThedailyworkoftheFoundationcontinuestobeunderpinnedbyMelissa
BroadhurstourExecutiveOfficer,andwewouldliketoacknowledgeandthankMelissaforherconsiderableworkinsupportingtheBoard,securingnewsponsors,fundraisingandoverseeingalltheeventsovermanyconsecutiveyears.

In2017-18,theArtspaceMackayFoundationenabledthecommissioningofanewartists’bookfortheMackayRegionalCouncilArtCollectionbyDaleHardingandOmarMusa.
DaleHardingisadescendantoftheBidjara,GhungaluandGaringbalpeoplesofCentralQueensland.HegrewupintheCentralQueenslandtownofMoranbah.DalegraduatedwithhonoursfromaBachelorofContemporaryAustralianIndigenousArtattheQueenslandCollegeofArtinSouthBrisbane.Hehasgainedprominencewithhiscreativefusionoftraditionalcraftformsandpoliticalandculturalthemes.Hisworksofteninvestigatethesocialandpoliticalrealitiesexperiencedbymembersofhisfamily,wholivedundergovernmentcontrolinQueenslandaround1930.
OmarMusaisaMalaysian-Australianauthor,rapperandpoetfromQueanbeyan,Australia.HeistheformerwinneroftheAustralianPoetrySlamandtheIndianOceanPoetrySlam.HehasappearedonABC’sQ&AandreceivedastandingovationatTEDxSydneyattheSydneyOperaHouse.Musa’sworkoftendealswiththethemesofmigration,Australianracism,violence,masculinityandloneliness.Hisdebutnovel“Here

Thisnew,collaborativeartists’bookwillfeatureinArtspaceMackay’smajortouringexhibitionViolent Salt, whichopensinMackayinAugust2019beforetouringtoeightregionalandmetropolitangalleriesthroughoutAustralia,2019–2021.TheexhibitionshowcasesartworksfromtheMackayRegionalCouncilArtCollectionandbringstogethercontemporaryartistsfromacrossAustraliarepresentingdiverseculturalheritage.Co-curatedbyYhonnieScarceandClaireWatson,Violent Salt reflectsonissuesofracismanddiscriminationagainstIndigenousAustraliansandminoritygroups.Theexhibitioninvitesartiststospeaktheirtruthsabouttheseexperiencesandoffersanopportunityforunderstandingandconnection,whilstseekingtocelebrateandhonourAustralia’suniquemulticulturalismandlandscape.
TheartworkcommissionisanopportunityforArtspaceMackaytoacquireaunique,one-offartists’book,whichspecifically

TheHandsOnBursarywasestablishedin2010byArtspaceMackayFoundation,withtheaimtosupportandencourageyoungpeopleaged17-25years,originatingfromtheMackayregion,whowishtopursueacareerinthevisualarts.ThebursarypaystributetooneofMackay’scelebratedartists,thelateRickWood,andrecogniseshisservicetoandenthusiasmforthearts.Throughthiscontinuedbursary,theFoundationannuallyseekapplicantswhodemonstratethesameenthusiasm,anddedicationtosucceedintheirchosenfield.
In2018theFoundationmadeasubstantialincreasetothebursaryfrom$1,000to$4,000tofurtherfosterthenextgenerationofartsprofessionalsfromourregion.Thedecisiontoincreasethefundingwasproposedtohelplocaluniversitystudentsgetaheadandstarttheirfutureintheindustrythattheylove,andtakeadvantageofopportunitiesthatmighthaveotherwisebeenbeyondtheirfinancialmeans.
The2018HandsOnrecipientisLinneaFreeman,arisinglocaltalentinthefieldofgraphicdesignandvisualarts,andformerseniorartstudentofMiraniStateHighSchool.LinneaiscurrentlystudyingatQueenslandUniversityofTechnology,
Brisbane,inherthirdyearofaBachelorofInteractiveandVisualDesign(Honors)Majoringinanimation,aftercompletionofaBachelorofMediaandCommunicationsin2015.JudgesfortheHandsOnBursary,ArtspaceDirectorTraceyHeathwoodandArtistandArtsEducatorLeonieWoodsaid,“Thereweresomeexcellentcandidatesforthisyear’sHandsOnBursary;however,Linnea’sapplicationwasdistinguishedbyitsconfidenceandmaturity”.Thejudgeswereveryimpressedwiththeoriginal,creativeandprofessionalpresentationofLinnea’ssubmissionandwereparticularlytakenwithLinnea’spromotionofsustainabilitythroughherillustrationsanddesigns.Linneaisahighlymotivatedandpassionateyoungdesignerwithanimpressivehistoryofawardhonorsandartisticachievements,includingarecentselectionin2017toattendQUT’SCreativeIndustriesNewYorkStudyTour.
LinneareceivedherawardatanofficialArtspaceMackaypresentationFebruary16,2018,andherlong-termgoalistoworkasagraphicdesignerandillustratorintheindustry,designingforsocialchange,andthepromotionofsustainability.TheFoundationwishesLinneaeverysuccess inherfurthercreativeendeavoursandcareeropportunities.
