The Crow Collection of Asian Art

The Crow Collection is a permanent set of galleries dedi-cated to the arts and cultures of China, Japan, India and Southeast Asia. The museum offers a serene setting for quiet reflection and learning.

Dallas Contemporary

A non-collecting art museum presenting new and chal-lenging ideas from regional, national and international artists. The institution is committed to engaging the pub-lic through exhibitions, lectures, educational programs and events. Dallas Contemporary is a not-for-profit charity.

Dallas Museum of Art

The Dallas Museum of Art (DMA) was founded in 1903. In 1984 the Museum moved into its current location, as the first arts organization in the newly designated Arts District. The collections contain over 24,000 works of art spanning 5,000 years of human creativity. The Museum is known for its arts of the ancient Americas, Africa, Indonesia, and South Asia; European and American painting, sculpture, and decorative arts; and American and international con-temporary art.

Meadows Museum The Meadows Museum has a large permanent collection of 10th – 20th century Spanish Art. Also the Bridwell Library (on campus) has a collection of rare theological books.

McKinney Avenue Contemporary

The McKinney Avenue Contemporary (The MAC) is a non-profit organization that stands as Dallas’s advocate for creative freedom offering the opportunity for experimenta-tion and presentation of art in all disciplines. It supports the emerging and established artist’s role in society provid-ing a forum for critical dialogue with their audiences. This relationship is cultivated through education and innovative programming.

Museum of Geometric and MADI Art

In 1946 in Buenos Aires, Carmelo Arden Quin articulated the ideas of the MADI movement in his MADI Manifesto. The movement has combined complexity and uniqueness with playfulness and whimsy. Focusing on geometric shapes that spill out of the traditional frame, and articu-lated and mobile structures, MADI artists refuse to make the object representative, but rather focus on the object and the colors themselves.

Nasher Sculpture Center

Opened in 2003, the Nasher Sculpture Center houses a collection of modern and contemporary sculpture. It is located adjacent to the Dallas Museum of Art. The mission of the Nasher is to be an international focal point and catalyst for the study, installation, conservation, and appreciation of modern and contemporary sculpture.

Dallas Center for Architecture

The Dallas Center for Architecture offers guided walking tours of the Arts District and Main Street District, as well as architectural exhibitions and programming.

ARTS DISTRICT With the creation of the Arts District, Dallas commissioned some of the world’s most prominent architects—including four Pritzker Prize winners—to establish an outstanding architectural district within the city center.

Dallas Museum of Art

The Dallas Museum of Art, designed by Edward Larrabee Barnes, was completed in 1984, with an addition added in 1993.

Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center

The Myerson Symphony Center was completed in 1989, making it one of the earliest additions to Dallas’s emerging arts district. The entire structure is tilted towards the sky-line, establishing it in architect I.M. Pei’s vision as a visual connector between the arts district and the city’s urban center.

AT&T Performing Arts Center The AT&T Performing Arts Center is made up of four main elements: the Margot & Bill Winspear Opera House, Dee and Charles Wyly Theater, Sammons Park, and Annette Strauss Square .

Margot and Bill Winspear Opera House The Foster + Partners-designed opera house opened to the public in 2009. The red exterior of the concrete hall refer-ences the red traditionally used in the interior of opera houses.

Dee and Charles Wyly Theatre With the Wyly Theater, REX/OMA, Joshua Prince-Ramos and Rem Koolhaas created a structure that reimagined traditional ideas of theater design. The interior is a flexible space that allows for multiple reconfigurations of seating and performance areas, while the vertical structure devi-ates from the traditionally horizontally-situated theater building.

Sammons Park Sammons Park is a 10-acre public park at the center of the Performing Arts District, designed by landscape architect Michael Desvigne with Chicago firm JJR. The park features a signature reflecting pool, numerous small gardens, sprawling lawns, and public performance spaces.

Nasher Sculpture Center

Completed in 2003, the Nasher Sculpture Center is a showcase for one of the world’s most important private collections of 20th century sculpture. Architect Renzo Pi-ano and Landscape Architect Peter Walker created a space which fluctuates between indoor and outdoor areas to house the Raymond and Patty Nasher Collection.

Thanks-Giving Square

Thanksgiving Square is a 3-acre triangular park at the cen-ter of downtown Dallas, designed by Philip Johnson. The site’s centerpiece is a ninety-foot tall concrete spiraling chapel. The center is designed to be a common meeting ground, where people of all faiths and traditions can gather to witness, celebrate, and promote the spirit of thanksgiving.

MAIN STREET DISTRICT

The Main Street District is the historic center of Dallas and home to some of the city’s most important early architec-ture including the Adolphus Hotel, the Magnolia Building, the Statler Hilton, and the Wilson Building. Many of the historic buildings have since been restored and converted into hotels or apartment buildings.

A walk through the district includes the buildings listed below as well as Old City Hall, Mercantile Place, and many others. Main Street Garden is a centrally-located park from which you can see many of Main Street’s architec-turally significant buildings.

Magnolia Hotel

The Magnolia Hotel was originally built as the headquar-ters for the Magnolia Petroleum Company. The revolving neon Pegasus atop the building is a re-creation of the original sign, the corporate logo for the Magnolia Petro-leum Company (and later Mobil Oil).

Adolphus Hotel

The French Renaissance-style Hotel Adolphus was built by the St. Louis firm Barnett, Hayes, and Barnett for beer baron Adolphus Busch in 1912. Notice the turret at the top right of the building, which some say resembles a Bud-weiser beer bottle.

Bishop Arts District

The Bishop Arts District is a walkable, artistic-minded com-munity of galleries, shops, restaurants, and theaters, housed in a historic district of mostly 1920s-era store-fronts and warehouses.

American Ballet Theatre @ Winspear Opera House

The world-renowned American Ballet Theatre, under the direction of Kevin MacKenzie, performs a mixed program that includes Balanchine’s Tchaikovsky Pas de Deux and Paul Taylor’s Company B. Performances take place at the Margot and Bill Winspear Opera House, part of the AT&T Performing Arts Center complex in the Downtown Dallas Arts District.

Plano Metropolitan Ballet @ The Courtyard Theater

Plano Metropolitan Ballet is a not-for-profit ballet com-pany comprised of dancers ages 10–18. Each year the company presents an original fairy-tale ballet and ALA at-tendees will have the opportunity to see the story of Cin-derella come to life on stage.

Sharp Show@ Owen Fine Arts Center (SMU)

The Sharp Show is an annual event that features works which have been choreographed and produced by senior dance majors in the Division of Dance/Meadows School of the Arts at Southern Methodist University. The Sharp Stu-dio is located in the Owen Fine Arts Center at the SMU campus.

DRAGON & SLOCUM STREETS (DESIGN DISTRICT) This area contains a number of the city’s most excellent art galleries, interspersed with antique stores and interior de-sign collections. Unless there are Friday or Saturday night openings the galleries are best seen during regular busi-ness hours. The galleries cover the best in contemporary art with some specializing in European Old Master style.

Craighead Green

The Gallery focuses on contemporary paintings, archival pigment prints and sculpture in a myriad of media and styles. Craighead Green represents mid to late career art-ists while continuing their promotion of emerging artists.

From its inception in 1984, the focus of Conduit Gallery has been to forge a link between contemporary artists' work and the public. DEEP ELLUM Deep Ellum is east of downtown centered on Elm and sur-rounding streets and extending under North Central Ex-pressway into the Fair Park area. This area was the center of African-American culture in the 19th and early 20th cen-turies. Deep Ellum is home to a few cooperatively run gal-leries and several excellent traditional galleries.

Barry Whistler Gallery

Barry Whistler carries contemporary artists, mostly local.
