ARTS & HUMANITIESCAREER PROGRAMS

CCAC’s Arts and Humanities programs encompass a wide range of educational offerings designed for individuals who want to launch their careers or pursue additional academic opportunities upon graduation. Employment options are varied and may include work in multinational corporations, nonprofit or not-for-profit organizations, academic institutions, performing arts companies, and government and advocacy entities. Entrepreneurial and freelance work opportunities also exist for those in the creative and fine arts. For many individuals, an Arts and Humanities degree can supplement knowledge in specific areas, with a number of courses that are ideal for people who are already established in their careers.

CCAC offers both certificate and degree programs in the Arts and Humanities career fields. Certificate programs help students acquire the skills and knowledge needed for entry-level positions, or these programs may be used to enhance an individual’s marketable skills by adding credentials that may attract employers. Graduates may also choose to increase their knowledge by taking the additional courses required for an associate degree. By providing and requiring a greater number of courses, degree programs prepare graduates for more expansive employment options as well as opportunities to transfer to four-year colleges and universities to pursue additional educational credentials.

ASH WARREN, who has always loved movies, wanted to become involved in the film and video production industry but didn’t quite know where to start. While working as a multimedia volunteer for the Carnegie Museum of Art under local filmmaker Tom Fisher, the college graduate started looking online for a film school and stumbled upon CCAC’s Film Technician program. What appealed most to the aspiring filmmaker is the fact that the program is focused on providing students with tangible skills and experiences that can lead to a rewarding career in the industry—since enrolling, Warren has found that to be absolutely true.

As a first-year student in CCAC’s Film Technician program, Warren directed the short film “A Visible Truth,” which was shown on WQED-TV—the nation’s first community-supported television station and home of “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood”—as part of “Filmmakers Corner.” Warren was also named a Next Generation Fellow at WQED, thereby acquiring further opportunities to enhance production skills and gain real-world experience in the field of filmmaking. Warren also produced a documentary short on City of Asylum, a local organization for writers living in exile. Upon completion of the fellowship, WQED hired Warren to continue working on documentaries to tell stories that connect viewers to the Pittsburgh region and the wider world. Warren also plans to continue to take classes at CCAC and complete the Film Technician program, which is growing at an astounding rate and is attracting major players in the industry.

“At CCAC, I’ve learned a lot of really wonderful skills that I use every single day,” said Warren, who holds a bachelor’s degree in Women’s, Gender and Sexuality studies from The Ohio State University. “CCAC is all about new opportunities. Before I came here, I knew that I wanted to work in film, but I really didn’t know much about the industry or how to turn my interest into a career. CCAC has given me the chance to discover what it means to bea filmmaker.”
