Welcome to Arts Festival Out East, a celebration of Arts in the Howick Local Board District.

The Howick Ward is rich in culture. We are fortunate to see this expressed in the form of visual and performing art.

This festival will celebrate the uniqueness of our people and will provide an opportunity for both local residents and visitors to share in what we believe will become an exciting annual event.

I sincerely thank our talented contributors and the enthusiastic Arts Festival Governance Board for their dedication and hard work in putting Arts Festival Out East together.

Creativity surrounds you. Be part of it.

Kind wishes

Tranquility by Kim Hoa Tram

A touring exhibition of Chinese Zen painting and calligraphy.

”I call my paintings Zen (Chan in Chinese) paintings because my works are based on the philosophy of Zen Buddhism. Zen is a way of meditation and contemplation which purifies the mind and with true wisdom we can attain spiritual enlightenment.

This is the state of mind that I would like to express in my works. Empty space plays an important role in my works. It is ‘invisible painting’ that you can’t see but you can hear and feel.” Kim Hoa Tram.

Tennessee Williams’ most auto-biographical play is a brilliant and compelling portrait of a family in crisis. As the writer returns to confront the past, his family come to haunt the stage ...

In the tenement apartments of St. Louis, the Wingfield family struggle to make ends meet. As America is ravaged by the Depression, Amanda clings to memories of her idyllic youth in the South. She is determined to find her daughter a husband, but Laura is painfully shy and lives in a world of her own. And Amanda’s son, Tom, an aspiring poet in a dead-end job, secretly dreams of escape.

Stefania’s Dancing Slippers: Lindy Fisher

This series of images were created by local Howick artist Lindy Fisher to Illustrate the story written by Jennifer Beck, entitled Stefania’s Dancing Slippers

Based on the experiences of a young Polish girl whose happy family life was shattered by brutal invasion and was wrenched from her home during WW2 and eventually arrived to New Zealand in 1944.

Each painting highlights one aspect of the spirit of the words and invites participation in that emotion.

They can also stand independently as works that will foster positive relationships, encourage the search for beauty in times of adversity and celebrate life no matter what it presents.
