The Campus of the University of Twente is an important locationfor arts and events. Students and professional companies perform,give lectures, concerts, cabaret performances, dances, exhibitions

and workshops. Cultural events are held in the Vrijhof, in the Open Air Theater and sometimes on the O&O square

Apollo is the overarching organization that supports studentassociations affiliated with the performing and fine arts.

In this semester booklet, all events of the first semester are listed,from August 2018 up to January 2019 inclusive, sorted by theme.

Security cameras monitor us, Facebook selects your news using algorithms. But many great insights that have turned our worldview upside-down arose while we were looking for something else. Director Davy Pieters dissects coincidence in How to Build a Universe and thereby meddles with the laws of theater and nature, resulting in a visual, cinematic, physical and musical performance.

Wednesday 12 September 19:30, Open Air Theater (OUT) / Agora Vrijhof [VC]Story Nights – Theatre Hotel CourageTheatre Hotel Courage (THC) is the theatre company of Katrien van Beurden. Together with her team, she collects stories from all over the world. During the performance, THC shares stories from the direct surroundings of the University of Twente, stories they have collected while talking to students. These stories are brought to life through a distinct theatre style with archetypical masks. During this theatrical and musical journey, the audience is guided and invited to become fully immersed in the story, but also to participate in the improvisations themselves.

Theatersport is een vorm van improvisatietheater waarbij twee teams van vier personen tegen elkaar strijden om de mooiste, grappigste, beste of ontroerendste scène. Als publiek wordt je gevraagd suggesties te doen en als compliment rozen te werpen, terwijl de immer knorrige rechters streng toezicht houden op het keurige verloop van de wedstrijd. Wednesday 26 & Thursday 27 September, 19:30, Amphitheater Vrijhof [VC][NL]Try-Out Tour Groninger Studenten Cabaret Festival 2018De 32ste Try-Out Tour, een spektakel dat je absoluut niet mag missen!Na drie spannende en drukbezochte auditiedagen presenteert het 32ste Groninger Studenten Cabaret Festival haar zes halvefinalisten in Enschede! Zij zullen Nederland verrassen met hun verhalen en grappen. Beleef een avond lachen, gieren en brullen met nieuw talent dat met deze optredens alvast een voorproefje geeft van waarmee ze tijdens het Festival op de planken zullen staan.

Friday 30 November 19:30, Vrijhof [VC][NL]Kinderen van Aleppo – George & Eran Producties i.s.m. Stichting voor Vluchteling-Studenten UAFEen voorstelling over hoop, moed en (on)geloof.Kinderen van Aleppo volgt het verhaal van drie studenten die de straten opgingen voor meer vrijheid in Syrië. Allen met eigen beweegredenen, allen met een eigen verhaal, maar wel met één doel. Vrijheid! In een persoonlijke monoloog vertelt George Elias Tobal het verhaal van deze vreedzame vrijheidsstrijders. Het verhaal van hen wiens revolutie is gestolen. Kinderen van Aleppo schijnt licht op de Syrische revolutie van binnenuit vol absurditeit en ongeloof, doch met humor. NB De opbrengst van deze voorstelling komt geheel ten goede aan het UAF.

Tuesday 11, Wednesday 12 and Thursday 13 December20:00 uur, Amphitheater Vrijhof [NL]Decembervoorstelling Cabaretvereniging ContramimeContramime gaat op zoek naar de antwoorden op vragen die nog niet gesteld zijn. Vragen waar niet iedereen een antwoord op heeft of wil hebben. Moeilijke vragen zoals de aard van ons bestaan. En waarom we bij verjaardagen toch altijd in een kring zitten? Het antwoord komt voort uit de verhalen van studenten die worstelen met hun bestaan en het kiezen van een kroeg op de oude markt. Monday 19 November 19:30, Amphitheater Vrijhof [VC][NL]Try-outs Cameretten 2018Keihard lachen om de topcabaretiers van morgen! Cameretten Festival, dé cabaretkweekvijver van Nederland! Al 53 jaar lang zetten de grootste cabarettalenten hier hun eerste stappen. Zo hebben duizenden mensen onder andere Bert Visscher, Brigitte Kaandorp, Theo Maassen, Ronald Goedemondt, Jandino Asporaat en Patrick Laureij zien vallen en weer opstaan! It is an absurd reintegration institute that presents itself as the perfect getaway. The guests, better known as clients, check-in when they fail to meet society’s expectations. In this dance performance you follow a young woman during her bizarre treatment. Within the walls of Hotel Rock Bottom you witness her retraining and reconditioning whereby her deviation from the norm is no longer an option.

But how do the inhabitants pick up the thread again in a city that has been largely destroyed. Living in such a city requires will power. A plate full of tasty colours, flavoured with a pinch of humor, and served to satisfy your sateless hunger for procrastination”, so it says on the website. Thursday 18 October 16:30, Big exhibition room VrijhofMoved Confronted – Willemijn CalisIn Willemijn’s work, you see her predilection for raw work and imperfection, as you can also see in her themes such as death versus life, transience, politics, power and the human condition. She works in a surprising way; a combination of painting and moving images. Sometimes also projected onto walls, pillars, or other sculptures in space. To make her painted short films, she uses the way of stop-motion animations, as if you’re looking at moving paintings. > This exhibition can be seen until Thursday 29 November.

Thursday 6 December 16:30, Big exhibition room VrijhofTo expand the definition – Yotaro NiwaWhat Yotaro Niwa attempts to do is, in his own words: “to expand definition of poem, sculpture, art and that of everyday life. In this process the ‘world’ in which viewers and objects take part cannot be stabilized. When we are placed in the midst of the non-deterministic state and come to feel uneasy, we perceive a concordant relationship with objects that is manifested before us something new. At that moment, we should not apply objects to the places they belong to as we would normally do. For it might be possible that through our experience of ‘viewing’ we can become tolerant toward occurrences in which object/others modify our own self-boundaries.”> This exhibition can be seen until Thursday 20 December and is a collaboration with ARE (Artist in Residence Enschede).

De kleding die je koopt bijvoorbeeld: katoen moet verbouwd, gereinigd, gesponnen, verwerkt en ge-transporteerd worden: dat kost heel veel water. Dat geldt ook voor je dagelijkse shot cafeïne. Van koffieboon tot espresso heeft gevol-gen voor de waterhuishouding in Kenia, om maar een voorbeeld te noemen. Rick Hogeboom hield hier een inspirerende TedXTwen-teU-talk over en vertelt wat onze waterfootprint is en hoe we iets kunnen doen. In de laatste jaren zijn vrouwen en immigranten in opkomst en zijn cabaretiers veel persoonlijker. Rosalie Fleuren laat het cabaret van pakweg de laatste 40 jaar zien aan de hand van veel fragmenten. Zij stu-deerde ooit aan de UT en deed een master Theaterwetenschap-pen. Als kleinkunstenaar en cabaretier timmert zij aan de weg.

She made an impressive photo serie which will be on exhi-bit in the Vrijhof from 6 September to 4 October. In the evening of 25 September Simone will be interviewed by SG about her experiences in Syria.

Fresco Peter Timmerman en Hiska Bakker van SG gaan met haar in gesprek over haar derde roman: De Idealisten. Die gaat over een dokter en een gehandicapte patiënt en speelt zich af op een afgelegen missiepost in Afrika. Twijfel over de wetenschap, (bij)geloof en hoop, maar vooral de kracht van menselijke idealen staan centraal in het boek.

Beide pro-ducten hebben gemeen dat tijd, temperatuur en vervorming es-sentiële factoren zijn die de uiteindelijke structuur -en daarmee de eigenschappen- van het product bepalen. Dr. Marcel Sluiter van de TU Delft illustreert met fietsspaken wat het effect van een faseover-gang op de taaiheid en hardheid van staal is. Een chocolatier laat dergelijke overgangen zien door op het podium chocola te smel-ten. Een avond voor liefhebbers van staal en chocola!

Hij won diverse internationale prijzen en speelde met beroemde orkesten en dirigenten als Jaap van Zweden. Hij laat zien hoe hij stukken inspeelt, bijvoorbeeld hoe hij de melodie ontdekt en accentueert. Ook zijn interpretatie van werken komt aan bod. Naast vertellen hoe je als musicus te werk gaat, laat hij uiteraard ook muziek horen! Dat zullen stukken zijn die hij op dat moment instudeert. Gratis voor studenten, niet-studenten betalen entree.
