Where are we now? This question comes up time and again in assessing where we are in life, work and the world. In bringing Michael Pennie and Andrew Sabin together in an exhibition of their sculpture we see two ways of considering this question; Pennie has chosen to show a selection of works created over the past forty-six years, while Sabin decided to make entirely new pieces, in an energetic frenzy of creative activity. Not knowing that they had been former colleagues and held each other’s work in high regard, the decision to curate the exhibition was based on an intangible feeling that their sculpture would set up a curious and informative dialogue. Michael Pennie’s work had not been seen in a tough corporate environment before and the sheer scale of Andrew Sabin’s new and colourful sculptures would meet the lofty heights of the Lobby of One Canada Square.

Mark Humphrey’s newest work, Nick Beighton Part 1 and 2, will be exhibited in the Lobby of One Canada Square, and consists of a pair of works exploring life’s trauma and triumphs, inspired by Nick Beighton, British paracanoeist and former British Army Officer. Nick’s story of finding a glimmer of hope in the devastation of war to become an athlete and compete in the Paralympics inspired Mark Humphrey to create this series to show the incredible strength that former serving personnel deploy in order to overcome trauma and loss.

This exhibition is presented as part of the Remembrance Art Trail, the inspirational exhibition by artist Mark Humphrey in association with the Royal British Legion. The six pieces previously exhibited in the 2016 Remembrance Art Trail will be on display throughout the estate alongside new pieces, creating an extended trail of installations to commemorate 100 yearssince the end of World War I. The finest British leathers from small craft tanneries that use old school dyeing and finishing techniques transform Sam Brown London’s beautiful belts, bags and leather goods into much loved possessions that are made to last.

MONDAY 1 – FRIDAY 26 OCTOBER Shirley Parker Gore shirleyparkergore.com

Largely self-taught, with no formal art qualifications, Shirley Parker came late to printmaking after a career in teaching. She produces no more than six original screen prints in any edition as she constantly likes to move on, always excited by the next inspiration. Her colours reflect the energy and vitality she sees in the world.

WEDNESDAY 14 NOVEMBER – FRIDAY 4 JANUARY Carys Davies cawiaf.uk

Carys Davies explores abstract scientific concepts in visual form. Her work takes a primary focus on collage, which inspires painting and installation to transform spaces. She uses various mediums to layer and re-imagine what is familiar. ‘Edges aren't intended to be definitive to look beyond what you see.'

MONDAY 3 – FRIDAY 28 SEPTEMBER Frankie Moughton-Small @frankiemoughtonsmallUsing waste fishing gear and plastic marine debris as her materials, Frankie Moughton-Small aims to transform harmful waste into something of value, encouraging the viewer to reconsider the role of plastic in their lives. She aims to set up a conflict between the initial visual appeal from the colours and textures, and the grim reality of where these materials have come from, and the larger issue at stake.

Devised and run by artist Andrea Coltman, the CWND Artist Residency offers a rare opportunity for professional artists to respond to Canary Wharf, interrogating the multi-faceted nature of the estate. Due to its unique location at Wood Wharf Construction Site, the residency presents new opportunities and exciting challenges. Now in its third edition, the residency reflects the symbiotic community relationship between professional artists and Canary Wharf Contractors. The work on show has been developed over a 12 month period and will run in conjunction with the exhibition R.S.V.P at no format Gallery, Deptford, SE8 5JB, from 17-28 October.

Poetry in Wood is a person-centred creative environment based in the Montefiore Centre in Whitechapel that engages people with learning disabilities in a way that values each and everyone’s abilities, promoting independence and empowerment through training and employment. In this supportive atmosphere, people are able to contribute and participate in the wider community. Over the years everything from small gifts sold in local markets to site-specific sculptural installations commissioned by businesses have been produced and recent projects have seen students design and make inlaid boxes, working ukuleles, puppets, animations and film scenery.

The Wallpaper Wall: Inside | Outside is both a contemporary domestic wallpaper archaeological archive project and, more recently, a community engagement workshop series based in the Brownfield Estate in Poplar. In both 2012 and 2015/16 the opportunity arose for Studio Houndstooth to document wallpapers in the decanted flats in Carradale House and Balfron Tower, thereby creating a contemporary historical archive of everyday, home decoration in East London. This archive has particular significance in that there are good historical archives of wallpapers and wall coverings from palaces and stately homes but there are limited records of everyday domestic wallpapers used in people’s homes.
