BYDE Announces Its Spring Concert

Barrington youth DanCe enseMBLe (ByDe) announces its 2016 Spring Concert. ByDe’s Spring Concert will run from June 17–18 at Bar-rington high school. The mixed repertory performance will feature the co-medic one-act ballet graduation Ball, the lovely children’s ballet Scenes from Childhood, eddy ocampo’s stunning contemporary work Mozheart, and a presentation of four Fosse-style works, Razzle Dazzle.

one of ByDe’s all time performance favorites is the one act ballet Grad-uation Ball. This lighthearted comedy has been performed by ballet compa-nies all over the world since its premiere in 1940 by the Ballet russe. ByDe resident choreographer greg Merriman has expertly restaged the ballet for the company set to music by Johann strauss ii, featuring sets by James es-tes and costumes by Debra schoell. The ballet follows the happenings of a graduation Ball for Viennese young women in a boarding school to which cadets from a neighboring military village are invited.

another highlight will be Mary Brennan’s Scenes from Childhood, set to a compilation of music from schumann and Johann strauss. This children’s ballet depicts the magic and excitement of day to day life seen through the eyes of a child. ByDe dancers will appear on stage with Barrington Dance academy students. The ballet takes the audience back to yesteryear when a

Meet Barrington Artist Ann Feldman

ann FeLDMan is a painter who lives in Barrington and travels for inspiration. “i have lived in Barrington for 25 years, and have added two painting studios in my home. My husband John and i thought in the beginning that we would live in our home for a few years before we would be transferred or we would move, but that just never hap-pened. We love living in Barrington and couldn’t imagine raising our children anywhere else,” Feldman said. “When the children were small, i decided to leave the corporate world. i felt a pull toward the arts, and thought i would like to try my hand at painting. Classes in water-color painting at Kaleidoscope art school in Barrington were followed by drawing classes at the school of the art institute in Chicago, and then by workshops in oil paint-ing with artists all over the country (and one in France). i’ve been painting for over two decades now, and haven’t missed a single day at the office!”

her paintings focus on the people, places, and objects that she has encountered in her life. Feldman’s paintings are represented by the Petter art gallery in saugatuck, Mich., and she posts her work at www.annafeldman.blogspot.com. to learn more, visit www.annfledmanart.com.

Saint Michaels Little Angels Preschool Earns NAEYC Accreditation

saint MiChaeLs LittLe angeLs PresChooL in Barrington has earned accreditation from the national association for the education of young Children (naeyC)—the nation’s leading or-ganization of early childhood professionals.

“We’re proud to have earned the mark of quality from naeyC, and to be recognized for our commitment to reaching the highest professional standards,” said Caren hunter, director of Little angels Preschool. “naeyC accreditation lets families in our community know that children in our high-quality program have teachers who create engaging classrooms, enhance relationships with their parents and families, and develop rich experiences for their students.

Currently we are the only center in Barrington to hold this nationally recognized accreditation.” to earn naeyC accreditation, Little angels Preschool went through an extensive self-study

process, measuring the program and its services against the 10 naeyC early Childhood Program standards and more than 400 related accreditation Criteria. The program received naeyC ac-creditation after an on-site visit by naeyC assessors to ensure that the program meets each of the ten program standards. naeyC-accredited programs are also subject to unannounced visits during their accreditation, which lasts for five years.

in the 25 years since naeyC accreditation was established, it has become a widely recognized sign of high-quality early childhood education. nearly 7,000 programs are currently accredited by naeyC, about eight percent of all preschools and other early childhood programs.

“it’s a lengthy and rigorous process to achieve naeyC accreditation, and Little angels Pre-school should be commended for seeking high standards,” said rhian evans allvin, executive di-rector of naeyC. “Caring for children is not rocket science—it’s brain science. studies prove that the brain connections made in the first few years of life set a child’s path for success in school and in life. That’s why quality educators are so crucial. For parents and caregivers of young children who are searching for a high-quality early learning experience, Little angels naeyC accreditation is a sign that it offers a high-quality education in a nurturing and stimulating environment.”

Caren hunter is the director of Little angels Christian Preschool, a Ministry of saint Michael’s episcopal Church which is located at 647 Dundee ave. in Barrington. For more information, visit www.littleangelspreschool.org, or call 847-381-5490.

Appeal LoCaL artist Laura KneCht gets her inspiration from those who preceded her. she is a self-proclaimed history buff known for her ability to make what once was contemporary again. The origin of her craftsmanship and techniques in making wax seals dates back centuries.

“The use of wax seals began in the Middle ages,” she says. “at the beginning they were used by royals, bishops, and monarchs to authenticate or create a signature for im-portant documents.”

today, Knecht creates wax seals for fine detailing on pa-per products, event menus, and for brides who use them on their wedding invitations. The seals help make special events truly special. “Wax seals are a way to stand out and be creative. They offer a personal touch,” she says.

Page 8: Arts & Culture - Quintessential Barrington · Arts & Culture BARRINGTON’S WHITE ... McDade teaches voice and piano at the Chicago s chool of Music and e l- ... childhood, moZhearT,

Laura Knecht bought her first wax seal stamp at a gift shop while in high school. Whenever she sees an interesting stamp she buys it for use on her pa-per projects, cards, and envelopes. she purchases most of the supplies for her distinguished projects from italy. Florence is a favorite place for her to find what she needs.

to make a wax seal, Knecht cools the end of a stamp first and loads the sealing wax, made of bees’ wax and resin, into a tiny spoon. she melts the wax over a candle. once softened, she places the wax on the intended paper surface and presses the stamp into the wax. Voila!

“it’s a time-consuming process, especially when a bride needs 200 of them for her wedding,” she says. But Knecht doesn’t seem to mind. “it takes me back to a time when people focused and concentrated on what they were doing. They reached out to each other in a personal way. it was a deliberate life.”

Beauty is underestimated Knecht says. “People sometimes forget to notice that beauty is all around us.” her eyes get glassy as she tells stories of peo-ple who appreciate the effort she puts into making her seals. she is grateful

for them. “They could do some of these projects on a computer. it’s easy and cheaper. But they are looking for something special.” Because each seal is cre-ated by hand, they hold variations. each one is unique.

no matter what century, something that serves a dual purpose is valued. Wax seals act as a low-tech safeguard against tampering. should anyone other than the recipient try to break the seal, it is visually obvious. a wax seal al-lowed senders to forgo the expense of an envelop while maintaining security. not everyone was literate in centuries past, or had access to ink, pens, and paper—so the wax seals were a way to indicate status and bring distinction to the sender’s correspondence. occasionally, the wax was perfumed.

in an age when privacy and personalization are minimized, Knecht em-braces the appeal of these seals. she reaches back to make what’s old, new. included in her repertoire of talents is calligraphy, a complementary art to wax seals. her pens scroll the lettering across a paper surface like skates on ice. The wax seal is a finishing touch. Craft and beauty combine for sender and recipi-ent. it is a reminder from someone who lives a deliberate life.
