market, where we’ll witness the endlessly aromatic (and colorful) variety of fresh produce this country has to offer. From there, we visit a restaurant and learn how to prepare a delicious Peruvian ceviche and its perfect complement, the Pisco Sour (Peru’s national drink, natch!). Finally, we treat our palates to the dénouement: a traditional lunch at a local restaurant. ¡Provecho! In the afternoon, we switch gears from culinary art to textile art, at the Amano Museum. Comprised of four rooms, the museum is dedicated to the exhibition of Peruvian textiles in three expositional concepts: chronological, raw materials, and the Yoshitaro amano room. Finally, we round out the day at Lima’s Main Square, home to the Government Palace and the Town Hall. We’ll visit the exquisite Cathedral and explore the Santo Domingo Convent, whose corridors once hosted San Martin de Porres and San Rosa de Lima, in the 17th century; their remains rest here today. Dinner is at your leisure. Breakfast & Lunch DAY 3 (September 10): Sacred Sights in a Sacred Valley We’re up early for our trip to the airport – for a quick flight to the town of Cusco, gateway to Machu Picchu and the Sacred Valley of the Incas. On our way to the hotel our journey to the Sacred Valley wouldn’t be complete without a visit Moray and its breathtaking views, which come courtesy of the immense, concentric terraces that mimic the setup of an amphitheater. The purpose of this slightly eccentric and completely impressive site is to recreate 20 separate microclimates – microclimates that ensured agricultural success for the Incas. Next up: Maras, Peru’s famed (and ancient, dating at least 1,000 years!) salt mines, which stretch back over the centuries to colonial times. Here, not only will age and perspective awe you, but the colors, as well: thick green valley contrasts with blanched white wells, offering a spectacular photo op of this Sacred Valley site. We’ll stop for lunch at a local restaurant before settling into our Sacred Valley hotel. The afternoon is yours to explore. Dinner at your leisure. Breakfast & Lunch DAY 4 (September 11): Thousands of Years of Inspiration The Andes are world renowned for their textiles and weaving, and today we see why – firsthand! We’re heading into the Sacred Valley to follow our favorite fiber from field to final product. It all begins with a community reception, complete with traditional music and kantu, a beautiful Incan flower. After the welcome ceremony, we’ll decode the Andean textile, starting with an explanation of llama, alpaca and sheep wool, as well as the organic materials – the plants, their symbolism, other uses, etc. – the Inca use to craft their natural dyes. Then, we head out into the fields to shear, clean and coil the sheep, llama or alpaca wool. We’ll watch as wool is boil-dyed, and then learn about the iconography used in the dyed and woven patterns; each is important to the people of this village.

At the end of the day, we return to the hotel, visit our “studio” space within the hotel. Dinner is at your leisure. Breakfast & Lunch DAY 5,6,7 (September 12,13,14 ): Felting Workshop and Hands-on Learning Today, we swap hands-on sightseeing for hands-on learning. Felting Workshop: For the next three days you’ll learn all the techniques to creating a nuno-felted tunic/vest, crafted from silk and wool. Eva will fill you in on all the important details, like how to design a seamless pattern, how to properly measure your body, how to calculate shrinkage, and how to create a template around which to felt. She’ll also treat everyone to a smaller-scale demonstration on wool wearable’s, such as a scarf or bracelet. Breakfast Daily DAY 8,9 (September 15,16): The Textured World of Korean Paper-Felting Today, we indulge in the second half of our workshop: creating a paper necklace from felted hanji papers, as well as a flat wall-hanging piece, inspired by our local surroundings. Joomchi, a traditional Korean felting technique, uses Hanji, or Mulberry fibers. For the next two days Ania will guide you through the beautiful process of Joomchi, often described as joyful and even meditative. Ania, shares how she alters the fibers’ properties, to create all matter of texture – from smooth and leather-like, to strong and textural. She’ll also school us in the varied applications of joomchi, in both life and contemporary art. There’s still work left to do ….so before the close of the day after a bit of refreshments in the studio, its time for some fun! Wrap yourselves in your beautiful hand-made creations, stroll out into the fresh Andean air and start the camera’s rolling for a photo-shoot session! Breakfast Daily – In-Studio Wine & Cheese Reception DAY 10 (September 17): Ascent to the Lost City Early this morning, we say our goodbyes to the Sacred Valley and we’re off to the Ollantaytambo train station to take a train to Machu Picchu, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Upon arrival at the Aguas Calientes train station, a bus picks us up and then proceeds to wind up into the mountains. Take in the spectacular views of the canyon and the Urubamba River. Just ahead, Machu Picchu, the Lost City of the Incas, will leave you in total awe and astonishment. Terraces and rocks jut up from the earth, comprising ceremonial shrines, gathering areas and ancient steps. After a tour of this storied site, we’ll have lunch before heading back to Cusco, our home for the evening. Dinner at your leisure.

Breakfast & Lunch DAY 11 (September 18): Traditional Textiles, Temples, and Wonders This morning, we’re off to the “Centro de Textiles Tradicionales del Cusco,” a museum featuring the traditional textiles of Cusco. It’s a cooperative, operated by nine local villages, and proudly displays how Cusco’s textiles are manufactured, from fiber, to yarn, to dyeing, to weaving. After lunch, we’ll climb up the Archaeological Park of Sacsayhuaman, to explore a fortress of the same name. As beautiful as it is meaningful, this is a site of huge rocks and archeological significance – a place that is peaceful and quiet, touching and poignant. From there, it’s off to Q'enqo, an ancient temple of the Puma, for a tour of the altar and of Tambomachay, a set of sacred fountains dedicated to life and health. Along the way, we’ll enjoy spectacular panoramas from the Puca Pucara watchtower. Our day ends with a visit to the Temple of the Sun, “The Korikancha,” site of the Saint Dominique Convent. Legend states that this temple was once swathed in gold – a sight that stunned the Conquistadors. Finally, we head into the Main Square and visit the Cathedral, home to spectacular paintings from colonial times, as well as other religious works. Breakfast & Farewell Dinner DAY 12 (September 19): Departure for Home We’re sorry to say, today we bid farewell after breakfast. Depart for home – or for a few extra days in inspiring Peru.
