about our art...

our University is bursting with creative talent, from the thousands of gifted art students who study at Christ Church to the international art exhibitions we host in our galleries. Every year, thousands of visitors enjoy our exhibitions, which showcase emerging artists of the future and established names from the world of sculpture, ceramics, fine art, animation and photography.

Previous exhibitions at our sidney Cooper city centre gallery in Canterbury have included works by Henry Moore and Billy Childish and 2012 continues this exciting arts line-up with work by Anish kapoor, Humphrey ocean and richard long, to name but a few.

April - May Earth and vision: visualising Archaeology and investigation in Folkestone sAssoon GAllErY, FolkEsTonE liBrArY

The exhibition title ‘Earth and vision’ reflects the significances of geology and landscape, and emphasises the visual technologies that ‘show forth’ the vibrancy, cultural significance and diversity of archaeology.

Through a focus on the details of archaeological research in Folkestone between 1538 and 2012 the exhibition challenges and extends the conventions and methods of presenting art and archaeology to the public.

The exhibition includes images and artefacts from the nationally important ‘A Town Unearthed’ 2010/11 digs as well as material from Wimbolt’s 1924 dig, Canterbury Archaeological Trust, and the Folkestone library collection.

Performed with Tenebrae, Canterbury Cathedral Choir and the English Chamber orchestra conducted by nigel short The evening begins in a veil of mystery with a poem by Jalaluddin rumi, the 13th century mystical suffi poet, sung in the outer round temple and out of sight by the soprano... and accompanied by a duduk. in the centre is the rousing sound of a huge Tibetan horn, calling us to prayer... Here the veil is lifted, and East and West became one and the soprano heroically intones dazzling high C’s. The organ thunders... There is braying of brass, a final majestic ‘oM’ and the sanskrit ‘Tat tvam asi’... A meeting of all cultures in one work! Be prepared to levitate!

Tue 1 May, 6pm internet linguistics – Professor David Crystal olD sEssions HoUsE, lonGPorT, CAnTErBUrY CAMPUs

What influence is the internet having on language, and what is happening to language as it comes to be used on the internet?

There is a great deal of misleading popular mythology, which needs to be replaced by precise linguistic description. This talk presents the view that the internet is in some respects a linguistic revolution, introducing new opportunities for communication, but that its influence on individual languages has so far been quite limited.
