ARTS AND CRAFTS IN THE

COTSWOLDS

A 4 night/ 5 day tour

SUNDAY 01 SEPTEMBER 2019

We will depart from our local pick up point and travel to

Hidcote Manor Garden (National Trust). The

garden is located on the outskirts of the village of

Hidcote Bartrim near Chipping Camden and was the

creation of American born horticulturist Lawrence

Johnston. It surrounds a 17th century Manor house and is

considered one of England’s great ‘Arts and Crafts’

gardens boasting a fine collection of rare trees, shrubs

and herbaceous borders. The garden takes the form of a

series of outdoor garden ‘rooms’ created by clever use of

hedges, each with its own character or theme. There will

be an introductory talk (subject to availability) on

arrival followed by free time to take lunch on an

individual basis and a free flow visit.

We will continue to the Jury’s Inn hotel located on the

outskirts of Cheltenham for 4 nights’ dinner, bed and

breakfast accommodation. We will enjoy a welcome

drink prior to a lecture, which will be given by Mary

Greensted (subject to availability), MPhil AMA. Mrs

Greensted is the former curator of the Cheltenham Art

Gallery and Museum and has written books on the work

of Ernest Gimson and the Barnsleys in addition to books

on the Arts and Crafts Movement. She will talk on a

general Arts and Crafts theme for approximately 45

minutes. Dinner will be taken in the hotel restaurant.

MONDAY 02 SEPTEMBER 2019

We will depart from the hotel after breakfast and travel

to Gloucester for a guided visit of Gloucester

Cathedral. (Please note that organ tuning is currently

scheduled for this day so there may be some disruption and noise

but audio headsets will be provided to minimise any impact on

our visit). Founded as a religious house by the Anglo

Saxon prince Osric in 679 AD, the site has been a place

of worship ever since. A monastery was established

following the Norman conquest of 1066 and from the

late 11th century the magnificent abbey church we see

today began to evolve. In 1216 Henry III was crowned

here and in 1327 King Edward II, who had died under

suspicious circumstances at nearby Berkeley Castle, was

buried here. Royal patronage brought further funds to

the abbey which increased its wealth and status. The

abbey survived the turbulent times of the 16th and 17th

centuries and has been constantly repaired, restored and

conserved ever since.

Following the visit you will continue to the village of

Broadway, which is known as the gateway to the

Cotswolds, where there will be free time for lunch.

The afternoon will proceed with a visit to Snowshill

Manor (National Trust). Nestling in the Cotswold Hills

this small Manor house was the home of Charles Paget

Wade, an eccentric gentleman who owned the manor

house before leaving it to the National Trust. His

collection includes musical instruments, clocks, toys,

bicycles, weavers and spinners’ tools and Japanese

armour. The organically run garden offers the visitor a

variety of architectural features, as well as seasonal

colour. The cottage where Mr Wade lived is also open

to visitors.

We will return to the hotel where dinner will be taken

in the hotel restaurant.

TUESDAY 03 SEPTEMBER 2019

After breakfast at the hotel we will re-join our coach and

travel to the historic maritime city of Bristol for a

guided visit of the SS Great Britain which is located

in Bristol dock. Designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel

for the Great Western Steamship Company, the vessel

was built in a specially adapted dock in Bristol. It was

the first ocean going ship to have an iron hull and when it

was launched in 1843, was the largest vessel afloat.

There will be free time for further individual exploration

of the Brunel Institute and the Dockyard and to take

lunch on an individual basis.

We will continue our day by heading up to Regency

Clifton where there will be a short stop for a panoramic

view at Clifton Suspension Bridge. The bridge,

which spans the Avon Gorge, was designed by Isambard

Kingdom Brunel and the foundation stone was laid in

1831 although it was not completed until after his death

in 1864.

In the afternoon we will depart Bristol and travel to

Gloucester for a guided visit of Berkeley Castle.

The Castle dates from the 12th century and is an excellent

Norman fortress set within an enclosing curtain wall,

which was subsequently built upon and added to

throughout the medieval period. Today visitors can view

the Keep, which is the oldest part of the Castle, the

King’s Gallery where King Edward II was imprisoned

and murdered, the picture gallery housing a fine

collection of paintings, mainly Dutch, of seascapes and

hunting scenes with a centerpiece by George Stubbs, and

a selection of lavishly appointed State Rooms. The castle

is still owned by the famous family who gave their name

to world-wide locations, most notably Berkeley Square.

We will return to the hotel where dinner will be taken

in the hotel restaurant.

WEDNESDAY 04 SEPTEMBER 2019

This morning we will visit Cheltenham Art Gallery.

Collections include paintings, drawings, sculpture,

archaeology and local and social history.

We will continue to Highgrove where lunch will be

taken on arrival in The Orchard Restaurant. Our

afternoon will continue with a guided garden tour

(approximately 2 hours’ duration) which will be led by

one of His Royal Highness’s garden guides. There will be

time for further individual exploration after the tour.

We will return to the hotel where dinner will be taken

in the hotel restaurant.

THURSDAY 05 SEPTEMBER 2019

We check out of the hotel after breakfast and travel to

Chavenage for a private guided visit of Chavenage

House led by a member of the family. The approach

aspect of this Elizabethan era house remains very similar

to how it was left in 1576. Only 2 families have owned

Chavenage; the Lowsley-Williams (the present owners)

and the Stephens family before them. The house and

grounds featured recently in the popular television

series Poldark.

Lunch will be taken prior to departure.

Following our visit we will continue our homeward

journey to our original pick up point.

N.B. As this itinerary has been prepared many months in

advance, the final itinerary may vary slightly from the above.
