The passing of a friend is always an occasion filled with sadness, but tempered with fond memories in celebration of a life well-lived. We have lost two dear friends recently, Charlise Butler and just days ago, Janet Toy. Both Charlise and Janet were talented artists leaving bodies of work that few could accomplish – they were making art until their last days. Yet their focus always was on others in the arts, bringing out the best in them, encouraging their talents, supporting all of the arts activities of PAC, without reservation. They felt deeply that the arts are a fundamental benefit to our community and never hesitated in voicing their approval and endorsement. Besides being excellent artists, and having delightful senses of humor, Charlise and Janet had another similarity – the firm bond that each shared with their late husbands…Charlise and Bud, Janet and Bernie. We seldom saw one without the other. The arts sustained Charlise and Janet as they lived long, richly creative lives. Now, they are all gone and we miss them. Our hearts go out to their families. “Creating an environment for the arts to flourish in our community” February 2017 Stretch and Shorty! March 18 The Shapiro Project March 31 Dance! Dance! Dance! Arts Americana

Get ready for a series of performances based on art forms that are associated with or have deep roots in America: jazz, western music, cowboy poetry, step dancing, body percussion, hiphop! Supported by a National Endowment for the Arts “Challenge America” grant, with matching funds from the Pahrump Arts Council and the community, Arts Americana will bring talented artists to town for our enjoyment and enlightenment!

On March 18, we will welcome a true Montana cowboy, T. J. Casey and his show partner, Jimmy Reader from Saskatchewan, Canada. TJ and Jimmy perform as “Stretch and Shorty” in a family show with humor, poetry and lots of great music. TJ and Jimmy also will spend time in school classrooms in the days prior to the Saturday show. TJ believes that kids are a significant link in preserving our Western American heritage. “We all need to stand up and protect the traditions and legacies we have inherited,” he says. “Without our heritage, our children lose focus, without our children’s focus, we lose our world.”

On March 31, the Shapiro Project rolls in from Las Vegas, bringing cool jazz and hot licks. Lead by guitarist and composer, Eugene Shapiro, the group features his brother, Boris on drums, Brian Triola on keyboard and Macr Solis on saxaphone. The band organized in 2000 by four UNLV students pursuing Jazz Studies degrees. All members of the Shapiro Project are experienced musicians who have performed jazz and commercial music at numerous casino and other venues in Las Vegas, including the Smith Center. They have performed in jazz festivals across the United States as well as internationally including Japan, Germany, and Israel. The group will conduct a master class for middle school music students prior to their performance. Eugene’s original compositions are featured on their CD, “True Colors,” and he has received grants from the Nevada Arts Council to support his work.

  • On April 7, Jason Nious will step into town from Las Vegas, bringing a joyous energy and exceptional talent in step dancing and body percussion to the stage in “Dance! Dance! Dance!” Jason Nious is a graduate of University of New Mexico with a BA in Theatre. His passion for stepping has allowed him to help introduce stepping to hundreds of thousands around the world as a dancer, choreographer and teaching artist with companies including STOMP, Step Afrika!, Stomp The Yard 2 (film) and Cirque du Soleil - KA and Zarkana. He has worked as a cultural ambassador on U.S. Embassy sponsored events in Tanzania, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Madagascar, South Africa, and Brazil, and was cited as a "young Emerging Artist" from the District of Columbia Commission on the Arts and Humanities.Editor’s Note: Stepping is hailed as one of the most exciting dance forms created by Americans in the 20th century. lncorporating elements such as clapping, tapping, marching, military drills, schoolyard games, song, dance, and acrobatics, this polyrhythmic percussive art form was first developed by African-American fraternities and sororities to promote unity among the members of their organizations. Stepping has been used in educational settings to develop and promote teamwork, discipline, confidence, music appreciation, and physical well-being. Arts Americana tickets for each event are $10 per person. Students free with a paid adult admission. Tickets will go on sale February 15 at the PAC office, Mon-Thu, 10 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. and Saturdays, Feb. 18 through March 11, 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. PAC member discount on series tickets: $25 for three.
