Arts Adventure 2017Summer Camp

Arts Adventure invites you to attend a week-long summer camp on the Northern Oklahoma College Tonkawa campus where you will gain talents and skills in visual arts, computer graphics, music, photography, dance, theatre and writing. The camp is open to students entering Grades Six through Twelve and to those who have graduated high school this spring.Arts Adventure begins at 8:30 am and ends at 4 pm daily with a exhibition and performance at 4:30 pm Friday in the Kinzer Performing Arts Center. Students will participate daily in one to four classes throughout the week.

Enrollment is limited in some classes. Classes with too few students may be cancelled.

DANCE AND DRAMAAUDITION LIKE A PRO (Artist Christina Rich-Splawn) Students learn basic techniques of presenting a monologue in an audition setting. Other skills such as enunciation, projection, characterization and memorization are taught along with self-confi dence building skills. Students also conduct their own audition with volunteer members of the local theatre community in order to experience auditioning from the other side of the table!

STAGE MAKE-UP (Artist Christina Rich-Splawn) Each student receives a make-up kit with professional supplies. Students learn the basics of make application: old age; clowns; cultural/traditional (Kabuki, Maori, Day of the Dead, Papua New Guinea, African, etc.); beards, burns, bruises and scars.

STEP INTO CELTIC & CONTRA DANCE (Artist Jean Hill) Step into the energetic world of Irish and Scottish dancing and explore the Celtic connection to America’s own social dance creation, contra dancing! Students will sample traditional céili dances, then experience the fun and fl ow of contemporary contra dances. No prior dance experience required.

MUSICDRUM CIRCLE (Artist J. Wayne Hudson) Drum Circle will explore the drums and rhythms of Africa. Students will learn how to play various drums and shakers common in African drum circles. In addition, the class will explore how this music has been incorporated into American popular music from Ragtime to present day Rock and Roll. No prior drumming experience required.

JAZZ IMPROVISATION (Artist Edward Dixon) Do you love to make up the music as you go along? Do you want to know what notes will sound great with music you love to listen to and play? Using jazz improvisation principles, this course will teach you how to build a jazz solo, play in a jazz combo or play along with your favorite songs without needing everything to be written down. This course is designed for intermediate to advanced musicians of all instruments.

SONGWRITING & SOUND RECORDING (Artist Edward Dixon) Compose an original song, then record and mix it using online software. Learn to work with existing sounds, loops and live sounds.

VOCAL/MUSIC THEATRE (Artist Holly Peart) Experience the basics of breathing, registers, vocal anatomy, vibrato, diction and practice techniques. Learn how to tell a moving story through song and put it all together in performance.

PHOTOGRAPHYADVANCED PHOTOGRAPHY (Artist Tammy Ross) Learn to use your camera in manual mode and work with Photoshop to learn the basics of photo editing. We will create a fantastic photography project, too!

BEGINNING PHOTOGRAPHY (Artist Tammy Ross) We will work on basic camera controls and composition. We will also complete exciting photo projects to exhibit in the Eleanor Hays Art Gallery.

WRITINGARTISTRY THROUGH POETIC FORMS (Artist Marlys Cervantes) Explorations of artistry through the written word will provide the opportunity to use a diverse mix of forms as you craft your words and challenge yourself with new ideas. We will search the campus area for inspiration. Your works will culminate into a portfolio collection of your writing.

CREATIVE WRITING (Artist Marlys Cervantes) Explore a variety of genres throughout the week, including fl ash fi ction, non-fi ction/storytelling, poetry and more. You will end the week with a diverse collection of original works!

Twenty-three student classes and three adult workshops to choose from!

GLASS FUSION with Artist Audrey Schmitz. Cut, design and layer luminous glass to create an ornament, suncatcher, tile or pendant in glorious color. Glass-tastic!

QUILTED TABLE RUNNER with Artist Kerri Gray. Fabric kits will be provided to allow you to create artistic home décor. Bring your own sewing machine and thread for a 60-minute stitch-a-thon.

PAPER MARBLING with Artist Betty Bowen Hancock. Marbling is a thousand-year-old art that is enjoying a renewed popularity. Beautiful zig zag or swirling patterns are made by fl oating paints on the surface of water. Come make unique papers and a mat for a picture frame.

ARTARTISTIC ICING DESIGN (Artist Janet Labude) Learn to use icing and decorator’s tools to turn baked goods into edible art. Master a variety of professional techniques. Practice on cookies, collaborate on large sheet cakes and create a “portfolio” of cupcakes to display in the gallery, then serve to guests at the reception. (No cooking involved - baked goods provided).

CARTOONING (Artist Justin Stier) Explore methods of creating your own cartoon characters. You will learn to understand simple concepts from what makes a hero or a villain to what is funny or serious. At the end of the class you will have your own cast of characters for you to imagine your own story.

CELTIC & VIKING ART PROJECTS (Artist Jean Hill) Celebrate the Celtic and Nordic imaginations by exploring the historic art of the Celts and Vikings. Projects include making an authentic reproduction of a bronze war shield, a lap-size cardboard harp, embossed copper cards, and a dragon-size egg decorated with ancient knotwork designs.

DRAGONS, DINOSAURS & GATOR SCULPTURES/PUPPETS (Artist Patrick Riley) Design and make a dragon, plant-eating dinosaur or gator sculpture/puppet with corrugated cardboard and paper maché. Paint your sculptures using your own imaginative color designs and add teeth, eyes and scales, using found objects. Learn how to make the mouth open and close and sample the art of ventriloquism to make your sculpture talk.

DRAWING (Artist Jena Kodesh) Drawing with pen and ink creates artistic confi dence as mark-making processes are explored. Stippling, cross hatching and sgraffi to will be used to create personal marks which distinguish diff erences among artists! This class focuses on mark-making to create value and defi ne form. A reverse mono-print will also be created by mark-making into an inked surface.

JEWELRY & ORNAMENT MAKING (Artist Audrey Schmitz) Here’s your chance to create original pendants, buttons and ornaments using glass, clay, wood, metal, paper, wire and more. Learn about glass fusing, ceramic glaze and fi ring techniques, and how to create custom cords for your wearable art!

LEATHER ANIMAL FANTASY MASKS (Artist Patrick Riley) Design your own Animal Fantasy Masks with a nationally recognized mask maker! Create your own animal fantasy drawings and make them into leather masks. Construct a full-face mask using leather, wood, copper and acrylic paint. Animal fantasy masks include dragons, unicorns and other mythological creatures.

PAPER MARBLING & ORIGAMI (Artist Betty Bowen Hancock) Paper marbling was invented in medieval Turkey, and origami from the same Japanese era as the samurai. These fun and amazing techniques turn plain paper into nearly anything. We will make birds, boxes, dinosaurs, dragons, notecards, masks and pop-up cards and puzzles. No experience required.

OIL PAINTING (Artist Jena Kodesh) By combining oil paint, charcoal drawing and a secret solution, you will explore natural form in creating still-life and landscape paintings. Working in transparent layers, this painting process allows you to produce vibrant colors and striking painted surfaces.

PAINTING WITH WATERCOLOR & GOUACHE (Artist Jena Kodesh) Pigment dances with water as students create in color! Many experimental painting processes are explored as a means of expression. Texture is used to generate organic form.

WILD & WOOLLY (Artist Betty Bowen Hancock) Learn how to create any creature you can imagine by using colored wool and a special barbed needle. Campers will make realistic or imaginative animal and character sculptures. No experience needed, just a little patience and a lot of imagination.

COMPUTER & VIDEO

VIDEO PRODUCTION/COMPUTER GRAPHICS 101 (Artist Brad Matson) This day-long class will combine the Arts Adventurer’s two loves of Video Production and Computer Graphics. In the morning session you will build a visual storyline for a story created by the group and learn how to operate a video camera and editing software. In the afternoon, you will create your own version of computer graphics to go with the morning’s visual story. The group will create titles and credits for the video and will utilize green screen techniques in fi nishing your group project. Make an awesome video with a group and have it shown on the big screen at the Friday Showcase.
