INTERNATIONAL ART ENTHUSIASTS UNITED WITH RE-CENT ERA CONTEMPORARY ART WORKS FROM TURKEY IN SOUTH KOREA

Taking place between September 5-26, 2012 in the capital of South Korea, Seoul, the exhibition “Encoun-ters: Turkish Contemporary Art in Korea” includes the works of both up-and-coming and world renowned Turkish artists. Held in one of the Far East’s strongest cultural and financial hubs, the exhibition in Seoul is expected to raise the value of contemporary Turkish art on a global scale. “Encounters: Turkish Contemporary Art in Korea” exhi-bition, entitled “Transitions: From Modern to Contem-porary”, the works of noteworthy names having shaped contemporary art in Turkey will be showcased. In this section of the exhibition, art enthusiasts will meet with the works of artists who have helped Turkish art to win a place for itself in the world, such as Burhan Doğançay,

Komet and Erol Akyavaş all presented in important mu-seums around the globe.

The 9th Gwangju Biennale

The 9th Gwangju Biennale is held with theme of “ROUND-TABLE”The six co-curators of the 9th Gwangju Biennale have chosen the theme ‘ROUNDTABLE’ in an ef-fort to explore the possibilities of democratic and non-hierarchical exchanges concerning global cultural production. This theme was derived ini-tially from the six co-curators working method of being geographically distant but brought to-gether through different media of communica-tion. But the theme ‘ROUNDTABLE’ allows us to reflect on our shared contemporaneity at a time when the tremendous momentum of ecological, political and economic change has radically transformed our global reality. The team of

co-artistic directors consists of: Nancy Adajania, Bombay-based cultural theorist and indepen-dent curator. Wassan Al-Khudhairi, the Director and Chief curator at Mathaf : Arab Museum of Art, Doha, Qatar. Mami Kataoka, curator, writer and the Chief Curator of the Mori Art Museum, Tokyo. Sunjung Kim, Seoul-based independent curator and professor at the Korea National Uni-versity of Arts. Carol Yinghua Lu, art critic and curator. Alia Swastika, curator, project manager, and writer based in Jakarta. Founded in 1995 in memory of the civil uprising and the 1980 Gwangju Democratization Move-ment, the Gwangju Biennale is Asia’s oldest and most prestigious biennial of contemporary art.

Sights of Korea’s Historic EmergenceLee-Seung-chul’s Glowing Fabrics David Brubaker

Lee Seung-chul’s installations at Art Gate produce an engaging environment that strengthens the di-verse fabric of our global community. Arriving in New York, Lee cut, dyed and stitched together the sheer cotton? walls of the central pavilion, a closed cube of fabric illuminated on two walls by tiny fi-ber-optic video projectors low to the floor inside. As the video images stream up and out from the heart of the inside, Korean history is projected repeatedly on the interior surface of the cotton: marches, transport of young men and women, and on the adjacent side wall, the images of the making of ? paper, bubbling of water?, the hu-man feet mashing in the production of ? As this light of history passes through the cotton sur-face, the imagery spreads high and wide across

the gallery walls, as visitors who interrupt the beams appear as shadowy voids surrounded by past events. By an ingenious second video projector mounted on the gallery wall outside the cube, visitors who wander by in present-day space leave a positive, green, soft-edged elec-tronic shape of their own as a layer on the cycle of history streaming repeatedly through fabric veil. Thus, the walls of the cube display the inside story of perseverance in Korean society, and they exhibit also new images added by those who are making history anew. Generations from the past mingle and make images with audiences today, on the magical walls of Lee Seung’s cube of living history. The personal attention of hand stitching and the careful use of dyes made from natural materials are

combined with the very latest in electronics. Thus, the installation expresses the steady tradi-tions, challenges and successes of Korean’s in mod-ern history: political and economic renaissance is matched now on the global stage of contempo-rary art. In the natural light of ArtGate’s courtyard, Lee’s huge colorful awning of stitched translucent squares throws an intricate pattern of shadows across the urban architecture of New York. It is as if monochrome bricks of clay in the textures of Korean culture are pressed into walls a continent away. Thus, global cultures mix and intertwine through the environment of mutual exchange and growth. Both Lee-Seung-chul and Korean contem-porary art reach new heights for the benefit of all throughout the world.
