What is public scholarshipand practice?

Publicly engaged academic work is scholarly or creative activity integral to a faculty member’s academic area.

It encompasses different forms of making knowledge about, for, and with diverse publics and communities.

Through a coherent, purposeful sequence of activities, it contributes to the public good and yields artifacts of public and intellectual value.

The Publicly Active Graduate Education (PAGE) program provides meaningful opportunities for

graduate students to convene, share work, and re-think the possibilities of their graduate education.

Each year, IA sponsors graduate students from member institutions to participate as Fellows at

Campus OrganizingStarting an IA Chapter

• See the effort as an opportunity to create a tighter “network of engagement” among campus and community partners.

• Seek allies who can share projects and resources.

• Different centers and departments contribute funds and staff time.

• The effort is branded as an “IA Chapter.”

• The chapter develops the campus work plan and advocates for it with the administration.

• The chapter coordinates proposals for presentations at the national IA meeting.
