PATRICIA GUERRERO Dancer, director, choreographer Granada, Spain At only 26 years old, Patricia Guerrero has already made her mark in the world of flamenco as an innovator in the art form. Born in Granada, Spain in 1990, Guerrero began her formal flamenco training at the age of three at her mother’s academy, where she also studied ballet and Spanish classical dance. At the age of 15 she toured with Mario Maya’s company in the production of Diálogo del Amargo. That same year she won the 2005 Concurso Nacional de Arte Flamenco Ciudad de Ubrique flamenco competition. Two years later she caught the eye of the greater flamenco community when she won El Desplante award at the 2007 Festival Internacional del Cante de Las Minas, which led to performances at the Festival de Jerez, Festival Internacional de Música y Danza de Granada, and the Bienal de Jóvenes de Sevilla. At age 20 she toured Europe with her first solo production, Desde el Albayzín, in 2010. Shortly thereafter, Gurrero performed as a soloist in acclaimed documentarian Carlos Saura’s stage production Flamenco Hoy, which toured internationally. She also appeared in his 2010 film Flamenco, Flamenco performing a guajira with singer Arcángel and choreographers Rafael Estévez and Valeriano Paños. Guerrero later performed in Rúben Olmo’s production of Tranquilo Alboroto, and in 2011 became the principal dancer in his Ballet Flamenco de Andalucía. After appearing as a guest artist in Arcángel’s production of Ólor a Tierra, Guerrero worked with him on Las Idas y las Vueltas, a collaboration with the musical group Accademia del Piacere and viola de gamba player Fahmi Alqhai, that showcased a fusion between flamenco and baroque music. For her performance in Las Idas y las Vueltas at the 2012 Bienal de Flamenco in Sevilla, Guerrero won the Giraldillo de Oro award for New Artist. This June she won the Venecia Flamenca award at the Festival Flamenco de la Mistela in Sevilla, which recognizes a young flamenco musician, dancer or singer each year. The Festival said it chose to honor Guerrero for her “creativity, performance and contribution to new forms of expression that bind the traditional and contemporary.”
