    project:

// Te InterLiving Project is a three year project, 2001-2003. Conduct both in Stockholm, Sweden & Paris,France.

// Several dierent methods were used in combination

to investigate what had meaningto the amilymembers. Some o the methods used are: cultural

probes, interviews, observations, workshops, videobrainstorming, prototyping inthe homes, technologyprobes & individual assignments.

We use the concept o amilyto describe close relations spread

over generations. Te Tree Swedishamilies we work with are distributedin three households each. Teparticipants ages varied between one& 75 years. We will work with the sabe30 people through the three years.

    objectives:

// One o interLivings objectives is to developarteacts that use inormation technology to acilitateintergenerational communication within amilies.

// Another o our objectives is to try out, modiy anddescribe dierent methods or co-designing with personsin such a private setting. We want to develop methods

that let the amily members participate and inuence thedesign through out the whole process.

... technology arteacts that will beused or a length o time by the amilymembers.

    meanings:

// You would not normally say that you use a paintingthat you have hanging on the wall. Te concept offunction has a wider meaning to designers, letting itcover all meanings an arteact has to its users. Tat meanscovering social, cultural and operational meanings.

// ... the common misunderstanding that there is an

absolute measurement o beauty. Tey miss that peoplespreerences depend on actors like: class, culturalbackground, economic background, ethnicity, gender, age, neighbourhood, occupation, etc.

Within a amily there are alwaysobjects that have dierent roles andmeaning to dierent members. Tisadds more complexity.

    probes:

// We know that it is difcult or users to be innovativeby just talking about what technology they want inthe uture. But on the other hand people can be veryinnovative when they are given the right tools andcircumstances.

// Te kits were produced so that all the contents would

have an integrated appearance. It was important that theygave the users a notion o importance and respect.

// Te diary probe is a good tool or revealing storieslike the one above. Tis inormation would be hard

to get with other methods. Since it is about non-communication.

// Te probes gave us insight into the amilies, but mostlyrom a ew peoples view. Head o amily = head o probe!

We calculate that what does notshow in one method will be revealedin another.

... the probes have revealed a lot oinormation about the complexityand the context seen rom the usersperspective. Te probes also helpexpanding design space.

    plus:

// One objective with the workshops is to help the amilymembers generate and develop design ideas that theyexperience as meaningul.

// Tis eedback gives all participants the opportunity tocorrect or veriy our descriptions. Tis also gives thedierent amilies understandings o the other

    participating amilies.

// O course a lot o exchange o ideas takes place inlanguage. Tis is inevitable. But or several reasons we tryto move the discussions into arteacts o some kind.

// Te ideas that have been generated in cooperation with

the amily members concern coordination and playulinteraction. Tese will be developed urther byprototyping together with them to assure that theycontinue to have meaning to them.
