And there'salso been some work out of the University ofMississippi where they have extracted compound, again a polysaccharide fromspirulina, which greatly stimulates the immunesystem.

somehow grow or harvest in their backyard, and if not, why not?

Gerry: Well, it is something somebody couldgrow in their backyard, but it would be, first ofall, very difficult to get the type of productquality that we can get out here in a largecommercial production system. The reason forthat is that one of the major ingredients togrow spirulina is baking soda, orsodium

bicarbonate. It requires a lot of baking soda, aswell as some sources of nitrogen, phosphateand trace minerals. It has to be very carefullybalanced and maintained almost on a dailybasis. And when it's harvested, it's harvestedrather easily through a fine mesh scr

to oxygen during that time really would destroya lot of the phytonutrients.

Mike: So a person could end up with a powderthat looks like spirulina, but nutritionally it's notthe same thing at all.

Gerry: That's correct. Now it certainly wouldhave the protein content, which is over 50%,but you wouldn't get some of the sphytonutrients which are so very important,

Mike: What do you see as the big trends as faras the market penetration ofspirulina andrecognition around the globe -- what are thebig issues here?

Gerry: Well, surprisingly, spirulina is a matureproduct in the health food area, and the markethas been relatively stable, I think over the last

10 years. However, over the last 2 years, we'veseen actually a growth in demand for spirulina(see related ebook on spirulina). And we havenot been sure why until we started doing somemore work with some of our Asian customers, and it turns out that because of the immune-enhancing properties of spirulina, there's a

large consumption of spirulina in Asia, includingChina, because of the SARS outbreak.

    Mike: Well that's interesting.

Gerry: And so people are recognizing thattaking spirulina can keep you healthy.

Mike: Imagine that! Well, I should add, in myown experience, I think I've been sick only oncein the last 7 years, and I don't do vaccinationsor any of that. I rely exclusively on superfoodsnutrition, which includes spirulina, and I'm surethe people in your company, Gerry, they takespirulina as well, right?

    Mike: Great!

Gerry:Cyanotech, after it started up, actuallywe were founded in 1983, so we've been hereover 21 years, but it wasn't until 1989 that weactually started producing tablets and startedselling our spirulina through Nutrex. And so itwas rather hard for our associates working hereto take spirulina, but when we staproducing our Nutrex products, we start

giving out free bottles to the associates, andthe amount of time spent off work sicknesses declined greatly after it was widelyavailable to everyone working here, and itdeclined so much that our health insurancewent down.

Mike: Well now there's an interesting themeright there -- companies could be giving this totheir employees and saving money and savinghealth care costs all at the same time.

    Gerry: That's what we experienced.

Mike: Very interesting. I'd sure be interested tofind out what would happen on a larger scale, ifa Fortune 500 company were willing to takethat as a case study.

Gerry: Yes, and actually we've got an interestin trying to do that with some large companywith our Bioastin product as well, for carpaltunnel syndrome, or repetitive stress injuries,

Gerry: Well, spirulina is certainlya good source of protein, it contains all theessential amino acids, it's also a very goodsource of vitamin B-12, something that difficult for vegetarians to get from osources. And certainly as with everyone, it's agreat source ofantioxidant carotenoid.

Mike: So, just back to that vitamin B-12, to letpeople know, that's more traditionally derivedfrom animal proteins.

    Gerry: That's correct.

Mike: And as a complete protein, spirulinabeats beans or rice or other protein sourcesthat don't have all the amino acids.

    Gerry: That's correct.

Mike: So, any last words you'd like to share

benefits and some of the subtleties like this, protection against illness and enhancing theimmune system, and I think it's a productwhose time will come again.

Mike: Demand is increasing over the lcouple of years, you mentioned. The internet is

The announcement was made during Gershwins presentation last week at NaturalProducts Expo West in Anaheim, California.

A recent clinical study involving 36 allergicrhinitis patients has demonstrated thaingesting only 2g of spirulina a day provides a

    Human Clinical Study Supports Anti-Allergy

A reader asks: "I have tried just aboutevery kind of medicine to keep my sugardown, but my doctor insisted I start oninsulin and take five other medicines aswell. I have tried exercise and walking, but nothing really helps. Do you have anyadvice?"

There are a lot of good answers to this sort ofquestion. First of all, I applaud you for lookingat alternatives other than taking drugs to getyour blood sugar down. But I have severalquestions about your situation, because this isan issue that is completely in your control. When you say, "I have tried exercise and

walking, but nothing really helps," does thatmean you are still exercising and walking, ordid you try it for a few days and then give upon the habit? Because blood sugar will never benormal unless you engage in regular physicalexercise.

That means a daily basis. I recommend atleast 30-45 minutes of walking or ocardiovascular exercise on a daily basis, withone day off each week for rest. And ideally, youshould work your way up to much strenuous forms of physical exercise such as

swimming, aerobics, dancing, Tai Chi, Pilates, and so on. Frankly, I don't know what it meansto "try" exercise. Exercise is not something tobe tried as an allopathic response to high blood

sugar. Exercise is something that the humanbody was designed to do on a regular basis, soit's a habit that you and all of us should adopt

    for life.

The second answer to this question really getsto something that wasn't asked in yquestion, and that is, what causes high bloodsugar in the first place? The answer to that isyour diet. The simple fact is your blood sugar

cannot be high unless you consume foods thatare high in carbohydrates. My guess is thatyour diet consists of quite a fewrefinedcarbohydrates. These might includepotatochips, soft drinks, bread, or other items madewith white flour. You might be eating breakfast

cereal or items that are sweetened with cornsyrup or high-fructose corn syrup. In fbiologically speaking, there is no way for yourblood sugar to be high unless you are eatingthese foods in the first place.

Certainly, you could experience high blo

sugar from eating a lot offruits if you atenothing but fruits and didn't consubalancing quantities of protein and fat, but myguess is, based on the nature of your questionand a lot of experience in talking to otherpeople who are having trouble with blood sugar

levels, you are probably consuming larquantities of refined carbohydrates. I'm notbeing blameful here, just matter-of-fact. I'vebeen there, too: I ate sugars and white flour up

...continued... That, in effect, is the answer toyour question. If you really want to get yourblood sugar down, it's time to change your diet.Remember, your health outcome is in yourhands. You are the only person who can alteryour blood sugar on a permanent basis, andthe way to do that is to make new choices in

the types of food and beverages that youconsume.

First off, soft drinks should be avoided for therest of your life. If you need heltransitioning off of soft drinks, read my bookcalled The Five Soft Drink Monsters, which is

available at Truth Publishing.com. Given yourapparent history with high blood sugar, it isabsolutely essential that you avoid soft drinksfor the rest of your life. These bevecontain somewhere around 12 to tablespoons of sugar per can, and that is like

poisoning your system. Even a lot of walkingwon't counteract the blood sugar spikeffects of drinking soft drinks, so you've got tofind a way to get off of these soft drinksstarting right now.

You also have to tackle refined white flour and

these foods. In fact, the truth of the matter isthat you will probably die early if you don'tgiveup these foods. These foods are sim

incompatible with healthy human beings andbalanced blood sugar levels.

I could go on and on about which foods toavoid, but I think you get the idea. Basically, you could learn a lot from the Atkins diet aboutrefined carbohydrates. Just be sure to search

out foods that are very low in carbohydrate count. These would includhealthy fats and oils such as avocados, nutsand seeds, and flax oil nutritional supplements.

You should also get good quantities of healthyprotein into your diet. Good protein sources are

isolated soy protein and soy products such astofu or soy milk. I also strongly recommendspirulina as an outstanding protein sourbecause its protein is highly digestible -- plusyou'll get the added benefits of the spirulinaphytonutrients at the same time, which are

    known to have anticancer properties.

By the way, it's also possible that you havenutritional deficiencies that are part of theproblem here, although the large problem is nodoubt the foods you are choosing to consume. But you could have a deficiency in chromium,

which is a trace mineral that plays an importantrole in insulin sensitivity, so you couldsupplement with chromium and see if thathelps. You could also benefit from taking GLA
