After making sure every student’s computer is atthe web site you asked for, have students to locatedifferent topic areas — front page, weather, sports, classified, entertainment, etc. Next, go back to thenews section; assign well-known headlineinternational news and ask students to findinformation about the news by looking throughdifferent countries/newspapers. Then ask students toselect one article, use skimming and scanningtechniques, and summarize the article. Finally, selectseveral students to report their summaries and thencompare theirs with other students’ summaries..

    Focus Practice: (20 minutes)

Ask students to put the sentences back intothe correct places in the text. When finished, haveeach pair of students discuss their answers with

    another pair.

Activity II : Give each pair of students anotherarticle — this time jumble the paragraphs for thestudents to re-order.

Activity III :Give each pair a third article. Highlightsome words in the text and ask students to deducetheir meanings from the context.

Assessment: As a follow-up assignment, have stu-

dents locate an article from e-paper to practice skim-ming and scanning skills. Then students should sum-marize the article. They need to print out the originalarticle from e-paper and then turn in the assignment

    for the next class.
