Arthur and Polly Mays Conservatory Band Program 2018-2019 School Year

Welcome to Arthur and Polly Mays Conservatory ofthe Arts! We are excited to have you as part of our band program next fall! As a music student, it is imperative that you practice diligently all year long (even in the summer) in order to be successful in a band program. Practicing at least 30 minutes every day is recommended. It is highly recommended that you take private lessons (contact me at thomasbowden@dadeschools.net for private teacher recommendations, if needed) to help you in this pursuit of musical excellence.

Recommended summer practice materials:

• Either buy or rent an instrument if you don't have one (If you are not able to purchase an instrument, the school can provide one in the fall)

• Practice the scales for your instrument in the included pages

(All of the following materials can be purchased from Musicians Discount Center, located at

19405 S Dixie Highway (305) 255-9466 or any other music store, such as Music Depot USA in

Homestead, or Sam Ash Music at Dolphin Mall, etc.)

WOODWINDS

Flute, Piccolo: Key oil, cleaning cloth

Oboe, Bassoon: Reeds (Vandoren), cork grease

Clarinets I Saxophones

• Reeds: (Vandoren: size 2 Y2 for beginning band students; size 3 or higher required for advanced band students), metal ligature (first-year band students only), cloth ligature (required for veteran band students)

• Cork grease • Mouthpiece (Vandoren, highly recommended for better sound) • Neck strap (saxophones only)

French horn, Trumpet, Trombone, Baritone, Tuba

• Valve oil (rotor oil for French horn) • Slide grease • Mouthpiece

PERCUSSION

(It is recommended that percussionists purchase bell sets that have a practice pad and a set of

bells)

• Pair of Vic Firth Concert Snare Drum Sticks

• Pair of Yarn Mallets

• Pair of marching drum sticks, marching tenor mallets, marching bass drum mallets, or marching quad mallets (depends on the instrument the student plays in marching band)

ALL CONCERT BAND STUDENTS (required book to purchase for instruction)

Standard of Excellence Book 1 by Bruce Pearson, Published by Neil A Kjos Music Company

(Can be purchased from the stores listed above; ranges from $7.00- $10.00)
