i am pleased to report that the Foundation had another successful year, both in terms ofactivitiesandfinancialresults.MyexecutiveCommitteeandiarecontinuously

working to reach out to Malaysians to educate them on arthritis and provide assistance to those financially challenged. Aside from running costs of the Foundation, we have also had a significant spend in updating and printing information leaflets that have since been distributed to rheumatology departments in hospitals and other places acrossthecountry.Revenuefromour‘Jointefforts’publicationsremainasolidsourceof income.

Moving forward, the Foundation seeks to attract more sponsorship from corporate and individualcontributors.Tothatendwehaveproducedabooklet,‘JointheMovement’,that highlights our activities in an informative and colourful format.

one area of ongoing focus is the relatively low uptake of applications for the Arthritis Fund, set up to help in meeting the costs of expensive joint replacements. We will continue to liaise with the Welfare departments of various hospitals to increase awareness of this funding avenue. AFM will also seek to fund research in arthritis related studies to further the development of knowledge in this area.

21

Page 24: Arthritis FoundAtion, MAlAysiA Annual Report 2011 · nyonya restaurant, especially the delicious cendol. After lunch, it was off to the famous Cheng hoon Teng Temple at Jalan Tokong

The carrying amounts of fixed assets are reviewed at each balance sheet date to determine whether there is any indication of impairment. If such an indication exists, the assets’s recoverable amount is estimated. An impairment loss is recognised whenever the carrying amount of an item of fixed assets exceeds its recoverable amount. The impairment loss is charged to the income and expenditure statement unless it reverses a previous revaluation in which case it will be charged to equity. Any subsequent increase in recoverable amount is reduced by the amount that would have been recognised as depreciation had the write down or write off not occurred. Such subsequent increase in recoverable amount is recognised in the income statement unless it reverses an impairment loss on a revalued asset, in which case it is taken to equity.

Depreciation is calculated to write off the cost of fixed assets on a straight line basis over the expected useful lives of the assets concerned. The principal annual rates used are as follows:-

% Office equipment 25

Furniture and fittings 25

Gain or losses on disposal are determined by comparing proceeds with carrying amounts and are included in operating income.

(c) Receivables

Known bad debts are written off and specific allowance is made for debts which are considered doubtful.

(d) Payables

Cash equivalents consists of investments maturing within three months from the date of acquisition and which are readily convertible to known amount of cash which are subject to an insignificant risk of change in value.
