Cubism & its Artist Cubism was an early 20th centuryavant-garde art

movement that revolutionized Europeanpainting andsculpture, and inspired related movements in music andliterature.

In cubist artworks, objects are broken up, analyzed, andre-assembled in an abstracted forminstead of

depicting objects from one viewpoint, the artist depictsthe subject from a multitude of viewpoints to representthe subject in a greater context.

Often the surfaces intersect at seemingly random angles

presenting no coherent sense of depth. The backgroundand object (or figure) planes interpenetrate one another tocreate the ambiguous shallow space characteristic ofcubism.

    Surrealism

Surrealism is a movement stating that the

liberation of our mind, and subsequently the

liberation of the individual self and society,

can be achieved by exercising the imaginativefaculties of the "unconscious mind" to the

attainment of a dream-like state different from,

or ultimately truer than, everyday reality.
