ART THEORY DESIGN CHALLENGE #3 Objectives
ART THEORY DESIGN CHALLENGE #3 Rubric & Reflection
Animation is the process
of displaying still images
in a rapid sequence to
create the illusion of
movement. These images
can be hand drawn,
computer generated, or
created through the use of
3D objects.
WHAT IS ANIMATION?
• Traditional Animation
• Flip-book Animation
• Stop Motion Animation – Claymation
– Chuck-i-mation
– Paper Cut-out Animation
• Puppetry Animation
• Digital/ Computer Animation
(2D & 3D)
• Zoetrope Animation
• Erasure Animation
AND MORE!!!
WHAT ARE THE TYPES OF ANIMATION?
TYPES OF ANIMATION Traditional Animation
Traditional animation
involved animators drawing
each and every frame by
hand, and then feeding them
into a plastic cells, and hand
painting them to create the
animated sequence on a
painted background image.

TYPES OF ANIMATION Flipbook Animation
A Flip Book is a series of
pictures that slightly change
from one page to the next.
When the pages are turned
rapidly, the pictures appear to
animate by simulating motion
or some other change.

TYPES OF ANIMATION Stop Motion Animation
Stop Motion Animation
works by physically
manipulating an object so
that it appears to move on
its own. The object is
moved in small
increments between
individually photographed
frames, creating the
illusion of movement when
the series of frames is
played as a continuous
sequence.
Stop Motion Animation • Claymation – Uses figures and
subjects made out of clay
• Chuck-i-mation – Uses dolls
with movable joints or toys as
the subject matter
• Paper Cut-out Animation – The
person draws each picture of
the subject in a realistic
background
Many stop motion films can involve using
humans, household appliances and other
things for comedic effect.
It is sometimes called Object Animation.

TYPES OF ANIMATION Computer/ Digital Animation
Computer or Digital Animation
(CGI) is the process used for
generating animated images,
both static scenes and dynamic
images, while computer
animation only refers to the
moving images. Modern
computer animation usually uses
3D computer graphics, although
2D computer graphics are still
used for stylistic, low bandwidth,
and faster real-time renderings.

TYPES OF ANIMATION Puppetry Animation
Puppetry Animaton
is a created using
the life like puppets
instead of objects
(it’s very similar to
Chuck-i-mation of
stop motion).
TYPES OF ANIMATION Zetrope Animation
Zoetrope Animation is an animation toy invented in the 19th
century, as people experimented with ways to make moving
pictures. It was invented in 1834 by William George Horner, and
is one of the early forms of animations. Some still images are
drawn on a drum and when turned in a circular way, you have
an illusion of movement. The visual effect created by a zoetrope
is still used today to create animated GIFs.
TYPES OF ANIMATION Erasure Animation
Erasure Animation
uses 2d animation for
motion graphics. Many
popular charcoal erasure
films have been created
using this technique and
one famous animator is
William Kentridge.
Photography and animation
has to be done at every
change to create a fluid
motion in the animation film
