“Michael Cusack’s signature aesthetic is one of disciplined understatement. Through rehearsal and ex-periment his paintings have acquired a poise and latent tension that is the legacy of two influential phas-es of his life. The first of these was the Irish-born artist’s early life in Dublin, with its cultural mainstays of sto-rytelling and music; the second, a particularly charged period in the 1990s, when he discovered ‘white’ and Minimalism and hence the work of artists such as Ben Nicholson, Robert Ryan, and Agnes Martin.

Poetry and a graphic impulse represent the cornerstone of Cusack’s practice. The poeticism is both for-mal and conceptual. His palette, for instance, is usually confined to nuance, with fine shifts in a pale tonal range. And his use of haloed shapes and vessels can be particularly poignant. They seem vulnerable, fragile, and become vehicles of mysterious promise, keepers of secrets and stories; no two the same.” Meryl Ryan, independent curator and arts writer

There is a feeling across the planet these days that something is immanent. It’s almost a tangible “some-thing” in the air, but what is it? There are many contenders: social collapse, climatic convulsions, military apocalypse or the last judgment. I wanted my flowers appearing in the heavens above to express all this; to suggest UFOs, jet fighters, the archangel Gabriel and of course flowers. I don’t know what they might actually portend but I hope it’s friendly.

In a sense these paintings are cerebral self portraits or snap shots of my mind in action. They are about thought processes, decision making, questioning, remembering, day dreaming, freedom, boundaries and the linkage of ideas and sensation. They are about how an idea can form from something that may initially be indistinct and end up as something concrete, how the organic forms of dreaming and reverie relate to the more structured trajectories of rational thought. The language of abstraction and the use of geometric pattern alongside organ-ic forms have helped me to visually depict these somewhat nebulous processes of the mind.

Working primarily in oil painting, van Gils’ work deals with the pace of contemporary life and the impact of technology on how we experience our surroundings, through the genre of landscape painting. Focus-ing on the often disregarded and ordinary landscapes that are rushed past on the way to some unde-fined destination, her work draws together ideas of ‘landscape’ with how we experience nature in this busy digital age.

My work is informed by an investigation of my Middle Eastern and Jewish heritage and an ongoing engagement with the landscape, architecture, languages and wisdom of that part of the world, and that way of being in the world. The world of antiquity, in its diversities and dichotomies, is a passion and an infinite source of inspiration. Living in Australia, absorbing influences of landscape and light offers a unique perspective from which I revaluate my complex heritage. Personal experiences of conflict, migration, dislocation and renewal intersect with the dilemmas between traditions and modernity.
