Introduct ion

I have w o r k e d as a designer for over t w e n t y - f i v e years a n d A r t

N o u v e a u has a lways been my favour i te p e r i o d . T h e beau ty o f the

designs and the f lu id i t y o f line have o f ten inspi red me in my o w n

w o r k . I have also taught s tudents a b o u t design a n d the b iggest

p r o b l e m they have is that they think they canno t d r a w - some have

even been f r igh tened t o have a go . W e l l , f rom n o w o n there wi l l b e

n o excuse! These pat terns can b e used in their c o m p l e t e form, o r

elements s imply l i f t ed f rom here a n d there a n d c o m b i n e d t o create a

n e w design. A l t e r n a t i v e l y , the designs can b e used as a launching

p a d for your o w n ideas.

A b o u t the designs

A r t N o u v e a u d e v e l o p e d in the 1 8 8 0 s a n d lasted in its purest form

for a mere d e c a d e . A r t i s t s we re mainly inspi red b y nature dur ing this

p e r i o d , a n d a w o n d e r f u l select ion o f f loral a n d p lant designs w e r e

in te rp re ted w i t h s ty l ized, f l o w i n g lines. This graphic representat ion,

w h e r e artists' lines seem almost f lu id as they t w i n e a n d curve over

d i f ferent surfaces, has left us w i t h a wea l th o f beaut i fu l ly organic

designs t o w o r k f rom. T h e grace and f reedom of the p e r i o d of fer us

a huge range of classic designs w h i c h can b e a p p l i e d t o numerous

arts a n d crafts. G lass , silk and ceramic painters w i l l b e inspi red b y

the pat terns w i t h i n this b o o k - a n d so w i l l need leworkers a n d

deco ra t i ve painters. In fact , anyone seeking a basic design t o w o r k

f rom wi l l f ind them useful as a start ing p o i n t f rom w h i c h they can

d e v e l o p their o w n ideas. Y o u r creat iv i ty w i l l really c o m e in to p lay

w h e n y o u choose the co lour comb ina t ions w i t h i n the designs -

someth ing that I f ind my students excel a t .
