With the new year quickly approaching, Allied Arts is gearing up for the 2019 campaign for the arts. The annual fundraising effort is the signature program of Allied Arts – raising vital funds and awareness for central Oklahoma’s cultural community. The campaign receives support from more than 5,000 corporate partners, foundation supporters and individual donors. Campaign funds are directed to leading cultural nonprofits to support their efforts in making arts programming accessible to more people, offering quality exhibits and performances to enhance quality of life, and providing more than 700,000 arts experiences for youth statewide. Allied Arts is thrilled to announce that John Higginbotham, Oklahoma City Market CEO of Bank of Oklahoma, and Doug Stussi , Chief Financial Officer of Love’s Travel Stops, will lead the 2019 initiative with a goal of raising $3.3 million. Both John and Doug have been engaged with Allied Arts for many years, as well as with the Oklahoma City Philharmonic, an Allied Arts member agency, United Way of Central Oklahoma and Leadership Oklahoma City. In addition to generating important resources for central Oklahoma’s cultural community, the Allied Arts annual campaign recognizes an individual or couple for extraordinary contributions to the arts and the community at large. In 2019, The Honorable Frank and Mrs. Keating will be recognized as Honorary Chairs of the campaign. Cathy is a fourth-generation Oklahoman who has devoted the majority of her life to community service – most recently spearheading the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum’s Annie Oakley Society, while Frank is a former governor who led the state’s healing after the Oklahoma City bombing. A fundraising event in their honor will be held for donors who personally contribute $1,500 or more to the 2019 campaign. For more information, please contact [email protected]. A campaign donation at all giving levels ensures that art can help meet the diverse needs in our community. For example, a gift of $5 underwrites supplies for one person to take part in a healing arts session, where he/she can temporarily escape his/her illness; $10 provides admission for two at-risk students to attend a matinee performance of a theatrical production relevant to their school curriculum; and $25 offsets the cost of tights for a professional dancer. In addition to corporate giving, local businesses can partner with Allied Arts by hosting an employee giving campaign in 2019. Allied Arts will tailor an experience to fit your company’s schedule and culture with interactive arts activities that build employee engagement and inspire support for the arts. With more than 100 workplace partners, your business will be in good company! To register, please email shannon. [email protected]. With your support, Allied Arts raised $30,941.66 in just two months to grow its affiliated fund at the Oklahoma City Community Foundation. By surpassing the $24,000 goal, the Kirkpatrick Family Fund will generously match donations with an $8,000 grant. As part of its long-term, strategic efforts, Allied Arts is committed to growing its endowment on behalf of a sustainable, strong and dynamic cultural community. Although the match has ended, Allied Arts accepts donations for its affiliated fund as well as its endowment fund held at BancFirst year-round.

Chaired by Sherri & Bill Lance and Lynne & Bill Schonacher, OPUS X: Club Cabaret was a smashing success. The fundraising gala generated a historic $605,310 through event sponsorship, ticket sales, and raffle and auction proceeds. Aligning with the cabaret theme, the event put a bright spotlight on local artistic talent, including performances from Sheridan McMichael, students from Sooner Theatre, Life Change Ballroom and the cast of Oklahoma City University’s production of “Side Show”. Oklahoma native and Tony Award-winning artist Kristin Chenoweth stole the show and announced that she is coming back home for a special concert to benefit Allied Arts. Concert details can be found on the reverse side of this write-up.

A lifelong Oklahoma native, Carl Shortt has always felt a tie to photography.

“I was influenced by my dad,” Carl said. “As a kid we used to do long driving vacations – he brought a camera and gave us rolls of film and we took pictures as we traveled. I was always intrigued by what I saw and what the camera captured.”

So when Carl retired from the banking world, he knew that he needed to find something fulfilling to do afterward, and the camera felt like a perfect fit. Taking multiple workshops to perfect his craft, Carl now travels the state taking vibrant pictures of Oklahoma people, cityscapes, and landscapes.

Inspired by notable photographers out of San Francisco and New York, Carl employs a style consisting of many details and vivid colors, and enjoys capturing moments in Oklahoma time that he feels people might miss (including taking over 10,000 photos of the Myriad Gardens).

“I’m not interested in pure photojournalism,” Carl said. “I want to make something that is beautiful and my own.”

To this day, Carl says that the one of the most satisfying parts of his career transition is having a stranger buy a photo that he took.

Carl holds his community involvement to a high standard, and is highly involved in a myriad of community organizations in Oklahoma City – including several Allied Arts partner agencies like Oklahoma Visual Arts Coalition, Science Museum Oklahoma, and Lyric Theatre of Oklahoma.

For the 2019 campaign, Carl has been selected as the Allied Arts featured artist. Donors who contribute through an employee giving campaign have the opportunity to select one of two Shortt photographs printed on metal.

“I took the Lake Hefner picture one spring evening after tornados had devastated Moore,” said Carl. “I was depressed for the people of Moore, and took my camera to the lake to get away from the media for a while. The dust from the Oklahoma winds made the sunset even more colorful that night, and I was in the right place at the right time to take a beautiful photo.”

“As for the bus station photo, I knew the bus station building was coming down, so I spent a rainy day photographing that building,” said Carl. “I loved the gritty time worn elements

of that sign - it shows lots of time and the interesting things that happened there. It had a lot of life. It reminded me of the people who traveled to Oklahoma by the bus, and invokes a lot of memories in people and their travels.”

Carl is a partner in the In Your Eye Gallery in the Paseo Arts District, and he will have extra work shown there during the month of December.
