Grade Level: _2__ Subject: Integrated Studies (Art)

I. Provincial Curriculum Outcome (s): (e.g. Professional Standards from Discipline) – Taken directly from the curriculum document, this outcome may take more than one specific class period.

For Art, students will be expected to: GCO 1: create, independently or collaboratively, a variety of artworks

. 1.1 create art for a variety of reasons and recognize that there are many kinds of visual arts GCO 2: explore skills, processes and materials.

2.1 explore the elements (colour, shape, line, value, space, form, and texture) and the principles of design with emphasis on pattern and repetition in the visual environment. 2.2 explore basic art skills, techniques, and vocabulary through a wide range of materials and available

technologies.

1. Learning Objective(s) / Goal (s) (Big Ideas, Key Questions) – written in student friendly language (i.e. “I can” statements):

For the Art lesson, students will learn how to use the pointillism strategy to draw a snowman on a piece of circular construction paper. The teacher will guide students through each step. Children will explore different ways of creating and colouring their snowmen. In the end, the snowmen will appear to be in a snow globe.

2. Lesson Rationale:Why are you teaching this lesson? What is the overall purpose of this lesson?

For Art, students will be using pointillism to create their snowmen. They will be exploring using different strategies to make their snowmen.

How does this lesson fit in the prescribed curriculum?

For art, it fits into the curriculum because it allows students to explore using different strategies to create a picture.

3. Materials & Resources (Teacher Materials, Student Materials etc.):

Art: Blue construction paper cut into a circle, Q-tips, paint, paintbrushes, paper towel, pencils.

4. Technology Used (if appropriate): (Text, Audio, Video-based Resources, Web address, Maps, Charts etc.)

5. Learning Cycle: (Engaging Questions, Exploration, Explanation, Expansion, Evaluation)

What is the teacher doing? (This should be detailed. It is a script of what you will be doing in the classroom.)

Engaging Questions (Motivator, Review, Warm-up)

Art Lesson – 10:30 am – 11:15 am

The teacher will pass out blue construction paper that is cut into a circular shape.

What are students doing? How will students be grouped? (Make sure students are engaged, on task and are working harder than you. Some of the tasks you ask students to complete should be focused on higher order thinking.)

St. Thomas University - School of Education

The teacher will go through the process of drawing a snowman using the pointillism strategy with the class. Students will start their painting using a pencil to outline their picture. Once the teacher reaches step 7, they will switch to paint. Each step will happen as follows:

1. Draw a line to indicate where the snow is. Use your index finger to use as an indicator for the depth of the snow.

2. 2 circles for the snowman’s body. The bottom circle is big, and the top circle is small.

3. Snowman’s hat and scarf4. Sticks for arms5. Buttons on the snowman’s body6. 2 eyes, a carrot nose and dots for the

snowman’s mouth.7. The teacher will model how to make dots

or points on the paper using different colours of paint to fill in the painting.

The teacher will pause at each step to ensure students are following along.

The teacher will explain “pointillism”. They will ask students “what am I doing on my page using my paint?” (Making dots/points to fill in the blank spaces). This method is called pointillism.

The teacher will ask students what their painting looks like (a snow globe).

Exploration (Modeling)

Art : The teacher will model how to draw and paint a snowman. The teacher will follow the steps as listed above.

Expansion (Thinking Activities, Engage Students in Higher Order Tasks).

For art, students have a choice of paint colours for their pictures.

Evaluation (Closure, Reflection, Review) For art, the teacher will collect student’s work and

evaluate whether students followed the steps.

Students will follow along with each step that the teacher goes though. Students will colour their pictures with various colours of paint. Colours provided include: white, brown, black, red, and green.

Students will follow along with the steps being shown by the teacher.

6. Accommodation(s) for Diverse Learner(s):

Visual displays of the steps will be provided during the art lesson. The teacher will provide the appropriate amount of time for students to process and complete each step.

7. Evaluation/Assessment of Student Progress:

St. Thomas University - School of Education

No formal evaluation will be completed for this lesson today. The teacher will circulate around the room and check whether students are completing the steps as listed.

8. Home Learning Assignment (if applicable):

N/A

9. Lesson Plan Reflection:

1. Preparation and Research – Was I well prepared? What could I have done differently?2. Written Plan – Was I organized? What did I learn that will help me in the future?3. Presentation – Were the students involved? Was I clear in my presentation? How was the pacing?4. Assessment – What did the class do? How do I know if they were successful? What should I change for

next time?
