meaning the nine emotions.
Though we have not given any footnotes on the calendar itself, for those of you who would want to know the different paintings, Niladri titles the paintings in each month
January - Bandish, February - Geetham,March - Kaishiki,April - Yakshagna, May - Krishna, June - Yakshagna, July - Urvashi, August - Abhinaya, September – NrittamOctober - Anubhava, November - Nrittam and December - Aharyam
The centre-spread carries some of the press coverage of the launch, inaugurated by Pt. Birju Maharaj, Dr. Shovna Narayana and Mr. Muzzaffar Ali.
Welcoming in the new year in a novel way, Rave launched the coup de siecle recently. Although most of our readers would already have the calendar adorning their walls and indeed a number of them were also present at the unveiling, we would like to inform those of our readers who were unable to attend the event.
The calendar is the brainchild of Mr. Rakesh Bhatnagar the M.D. of Rave. On a routine glimpse into the work done the previous day, a brochure showcasing Niladri Paul’s paintings caught his eye and the concept of the calendar was born.
Rave celebrated the launch of the second edition of the vibrant, premium and collectible art calendar titled Arangham - Rave-Niladri Art Calendar at India Habitat Centre recently. The twelve pages of the calendar displays in all its glory, the vibrant paintings by maverick artist Niladri Paul based on the classical concept of Navras
........... and another step forward
Already into the second month, 2010 has
indeed heralded in another milestone for
us at Rave. The launch of “ARANGHAM”
art calendar has set forth another era of
growth for us – an expansion that we
look forward to ushering in and meeting
new challenges. I also hope that with
these steps, Rave can contribute in some
way to make the Indian print industry a
more acknowledged entity as far as our
Government is concerned.
For starters, the Commerce Ministry
should consider reducing the duty on
paper to prevent the combined effort of
paper manufactures to force the price of
paper beyond its natural limit.
Here, I would like to inform our readers
that we have already begun the process
of further progress by increasing our
marketing team and planning even higher
targets for the current financial year.
Meanwhile we can justifiably claim that
the the past year 2009 has seen Rave
more than double its production capacity,
in all our related activities i.e. prepress,
press and postpress. Our machines are all
humming away merrily.
So cheers to a booming and beaming
2010.

Quad/Graphics is the largest
privately held printer in the U.S.,

largest provider of print, digital

Americas.In a world of iPhones
and Kindles, Quad/Graphics Inc.
is betting again on the future
of paper - buying a Canadian
rival in a deal that will more
than double its size and create
the second-largest commercial
printer in North America.
Quad/Graphics, which prints
such titles as Newsweek,
Wired and the L.L. Bean
catalog, is acquiring World Color
Press Inc., based in Montreal,
which prints Time, Sports
Illustrated and Rolling Stone.
With combined sales of $5.1
billion and 30,000 employees,
the merged company would
rank behind only Chicago-based
RR Donnelley & Sons Co.,
which has $10 billion in sales.
Various reports Tuesday valued
the deal at $1.3 billion to $1.4
billion.
The American commercial
printing industry has been
wrestling with the double
burden of a global slowdown
and a universe of readers and
advertisers who increasingly

digital world, he said.
Consolidation makes sense in
the highly fragmented industry.
Of the 30,000 commercial
printers in the United States,
the top 400 account for less
than 30% of the market.
“When you put two printing
companies together, two and
two equals less than four, and
that’s the name of the game.
The whole idea is to get rid of
excess capacity.” commented
an expert.
Quad/Graphics and World Color
predicted that by combining
they will save $225 million in
the first two years after the
acquisition. Apart from plant
shutdowns, the new company
can generate savings by
purchasing paper and ink in
higher volumes.
Last year, Donnelley cut
3,635 jobs as it closed nine
plants, most of them in the
U.S., the company said in a
November report. Quad has
also cut back because of
the recession, including 550
layoffs last January. In the 12
months that ended Sept. 30,
Quad/Graphic had $1.88 billion
in revenue, compared with
$3.26 billion for World Color.
World Color’s predecessor
company, Quebecor World,
filed for bankruptcy protection
in January 2008 and emerged
from bankruptcy in mid-2009
under the name World Color
Press. As CEO, the restructured
company hired Angelson, the
former CEO of R.R. Donnelley.
Early in 2009, RR Donnelley
offered to acquire Quebecor
World for about $1.5 billion
in cash and stock, but World
Color rebuffed the offer.
Asked why he accepted Quad/
Graphic’s offer after rejecting
his previous associates at
Donnelley, Angelson said:
“Quad is the most efficient and
technologically sophisticated,
automated and forward-thinking
company. This transaction is
also entirely friendly.”
Quad’s early days : The late
Harry V. Quadracci, father of
the current CEO, built Quad/
Graphics from scratch, starting
it in an abandoned factory after
leaving an executive job with
one-time printer W.A. Krueger
in the early 1970s. It got its
first big break in 1978 when it
landed the Newsweek printing
contract.
As it happens, the Krueger plant
where Harry Quadracci worked,
on W. Blue Mound Road in
Brookfield, eventually was
acquired by what is now World
Color Press. The Canadian firm
closed the Brookfield operation
three years ago. Until his death
in 2002 Harry Quadracci cut
an iconic figure in Milwaukee
business circles. Beyond
his entrepreneurial success,
he projected a flamboyant
presence hosting elaborate
parties, including one where he
entered in ringmaster’s gear
on the back of an elephant.
With his wife, Betty Ewens
Quadracci, publisher of
Milwaukee Magazine, he was
a major donor in the area. The
Santiago Calatrava-designed
wing of the Milwaukee Art
Museum is officially the
Quadracci Pavilion. The main
performance venue of the
Milwaukee Repertory Theater
is the Quadracci Powerhouse
Theater.
For now, Quadracci and
Angelson will need to focus
on the integration of the two
companies. Angelson will stay
on the board and will head
the integration committee.
Angelson said print today is
“complementary to online
media.” “That is where the
future lies,” he said.

>> If you feel that your
employees don’t work hard
enough, only seem to be there
for a paycheck or simply don’t
work well together, you need
to hold yourself accountable
and realize that it’s up to you to
change this. If it’s an isolated
issue, remember “it’s about
attitude not ability” and it can
be dealt with.
>> If you fall into either 1, 2 or
3, experience has shown that
this is lack of confidence on the
part of the CEO caused by what
is called “the business running
them instead of them running
the business.
>> You can address this by
garnering the knowledge to
take control of the business.
Some people get MBA’s.
History shows that the
experience garnered through
running our companies is at
least the equivalent of getting
an MBA.
>> A CEO friend once quipped
that he felt like “they were on
an island” running the business.
We’ve all heard about the
“culture” of a company.
However, there is a major
difference between “talking”
about it and “making it
happen”. Unequivocally, change
has to start at the top. It is
the CEO/Owner/TOP Brass
that “sets the tone” in the
organization.
A few of the kinds observed
over the years include - Self

CEO’s who micro manage; The
ones that are always working
“in the business needing to /
making it happen”; The ones
that are true leaders, nurturers,
cheerleaders and coaches. It is
last one(s) that you might want
to get to regardless of company
size. If you’re not already there,
unfortunately, it’s a process
that takes time AND work. It
is all about learning while the
organization is evolving itself -
slowly but steadily.
Here are some steps that will
help you identify the culture of
your organization and how to
address it –
How much does a company’s culture matter ?

INDUSTRY
The bane of the printing
industry.
Last minute changes are
something this industry has to
live with. However it raises a
sensitive issue between sales
and production. The sales
perspective is how can you
go back to the customer and
charge them any amount on a
one lakh job. The production
perspective however is that
since the work is done, and
also since the production is
accountable for billable hours,
it stands to reason that the
customer be charged.
The fact is both are right. The
most productive way to deal
with this dilemma is to record
the wasted hours in production,
post them on the invoice and
then allow sales the opportunity
to provide them as a discount
to the client if they so choose.
If you think about it, why
wouldn’t it at least be recorded
on the invoice so if you decide
to discount them, at least
the client is made aware that
you’ve done additional work
on their behalf and made a
decision not to charge them?
Just eliminating them from the
invoice completely doesn’t do
anything to demonstrate the
extra work that has been put
forth to complete a project. This
can pay off dividends in the
long run if you’re ever asked by
the client “what you’ve done
for them lately”.
A creative solution to a rather
inconspicuous problem!!
Last minute alterations - to charge or not ?
This is a great example of
someone who realizes the need
to get to the last step.
Having “other resources”
while building the company –
i.e. having a partner that one
can confided in, and also a
board of advisors go a long way
in helping to grow the company.
A precious but nice thread to
follow.
Today, whether it’s on site,
guiding the repositioning of the
organization or through the Peer
Group process, the strategy is
always the same. Provide the
CEO with the knowledge to
be able to confidently manage
their companies. The important
thing to remember is that you
need to be open minded and
willing to learn. Without that,
you will never be successful.
NONE of us have all the
answers. The important point
is to never loose sight that it is
you, the CEO who is ultimately
accountable and that the first
order of business is to set
the proper culture within the
organization to be successful.

Apple has unveiled its much-
anticipated tablet device, the
iPad, at a special event in San
Francisco.
The new device is a slate form
factor tablet, featuring a high
definition, 9.7 inch in-plane
switching (IPS) screen, and
weighing 1.5 pounds (0.68kg).
The tablet runs on Apple’s
iPhone operating system, with
a new custom processor, the
1GHz A4, powering the device.
It will ship with either 16, 32,
or 64 GB SSD, and Apple says
it will have a battery life of ten
hours operation, with a 30 day
standby.
802.11n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth
are also included, as an
accelerometer and compass.
3G connectivity is not included
at launch, but Apple says it
plans to include 3G models,
but these will not be available
outside of the US until June at
the earliest.
The iPad will use a GSM micro
SIM, and will all be shipped
‘unlocked’, enabling them to be
used on any network.
In terms of operation, the
iPad functions very much
like Apple’s iPod Touch or
the iPhone, with applications
accessed via the touchscreen.
The tablet will be compatible
with Apple’s iTunes, iWork and
iPhoto, as well as compatibility
with the Apple App Store.
Common applications such as
Facebook, Google Maps and
web browsing are supported,
and the device can be used
in either landscape or portrait
mode. For input, the iPad has
a virtual keypad in landscape

Print has been the one area

In every other area of

sadly no one in management at
Adobe sees that.
Adobe Systems helped to build
the modern printing industry
and now, it appears, they
are hellbent on destroying it
-- not by willful action, but by
neglect. Without the de facto
standard of PostScript, digital
printing could not have made

not have happened as we know
it; and PDF would not have

around with ease, irrespective
of device or resolution.

Finding a Great Last Minute Travel Deal
It’s likely you’ve seen the advertisements and heard the fuss about last minute travel deals . There are companies promising to save you tons of money if you take a last minute package or trip with them. It is only natural to assume that there is a down side – some catch, hidden costs, or nasty surprises. In truth, most of these deals really are just that – great deals. Not scams, and not exaggerated.
Getting The Best Last Minute Travel DealCommon wisdom states that last minute bookings are
usually more expensive than if you book a few months in advance. As an example, air fares tend to rise in prices as the date of travel approaches. If you absolutely must travel
on a certain date, then it is usually best to book several months
in advance, when prices are at their lowest. This is a common truth, but it is not a situation that repeats 100% of the time as the raising or lowering of the ticket prices will revolve around demand and extenuating circumstances. In other words, there are instances where last minute bookings for trips, flights, cruises and vacation packages can yield significantly cheaper prices as opposed to inflated ones.So How Do You Get a Last Minute Travel Deal? Some of the
best last minute travel deals are found by looking for cancellations. Unfortunately, these are a fact of life, and many people end up having to abort holiday plans because of unforeseen emergencies. This opens up a chance for someone else to travel at a highly discounted rate. When a travel company is presented with empty seats, or empty
cabins, they will usually try to fill them, as any money
they can recoup is a good thing. They will offer a last minute travel
deal to try to fill the empty slots. The closer to the date of departure, the better the deal. On a cruise, for example, it is not uncommon
for the last minute
discounts to be as high as 75%!
Great Deals
You can be sure that the deal you are getting is still the same package as the one that others on the trip have paid full fare for. A last minute travel deal does not mean a poor quality vacation. The deals are genuine savings offered by big, reputable companies who are trying to reduce any losses they may face by running a flight, cruise, or other trip with empty seats. You can book your last minute travel deal with confidence, and be sure you’ll have as much fun as you would if you paid full price – if not more! Our recommendation : www.lastminuteshopping.com

In a path-breaking research,
doctors from Post Graduate
Insititute of Medical Sciences
based in Chandigarh have
reportedly found a very
effective solution for diabetes
type 2 through stem cell
transplantation technique.
With positive results expected,
Defence Research and
Development Organization
(DRDO) has given its nod
to fund the study further.
Started by PGI’s departments
of endocrinology, transfusion
medicine and radio diagnosis
in December 2006, the
paper was published in an
international journal, Stem Cells
Development, in September
2009.
Dr Anil Bhansali, head of
endocrinology department,
hailed the research as the
first in the world, with only
Brazil doing a similar study
on diabetes in children. “The
technique involves autologous
bone marrow transplantation
in which stem cells taken from
a patient’s hipbone can be
injected peripherally or targeted
at the pancreatic artery with
the hope that it will lead to
improvement in regeneration of
pancreas and decrease insulin
requirements,” said Bhansali.
For the study, 10 diabetic
patients, with an average age
of 55, were given the therapy,
with follow-ups for six months.
It was found that insulin
intake in seven had decreased
manifold, while three stopped
its use completely. These
patients had been suffering
from type 2 diabetes.

potatoes are packed full of
nutrients for your brain and

feel and even think great!
The potato is a highly nutritious
food. They are fat-free,
cholesterol-free, and sodium

of Vitamin C and provides
important B Vitamins plus
minerals like potassium, copper,
magnesium and iron. Potatoes
are also one of our best sources
of complex carbohydrates.

contains only 100 calories.
Potato! - SafetyThe potato is part of the
nightshade family and as such
does have some disagreeable
traits. One should never eat
anything green from a potato.
When confronted by green
skin on a potato, simply peel
it away. Keep as much of the
rest of the skin as possible.
For this is where most of the
vitamins reside. With milk in
the diet, it can be a sustaining
and healthful source of energy,
vitamins and minerals both in
times of want and in times of

The bovine politics..............
Google – and the Indian problemA friend or foe? The Google Book Project
and the controversy surrounding it is a
topic that anyone who reads a book or
surfs the internet needs to understand.
Although Google says that the Library
Project’s aim is simple: make it easier
for people to find relevant books –
specifically, books they wouldn’t find any
other way such as those that are out of
print – while carefully respecting authors’
and publishers’ copyrights.
Meanwhile Indian authors and publishers
have added to the dissent being faced by
the Google Books Library in their quest
to digitally organize the entire world’s
knowledge. Earlier French, German
and some US authors and publishers
have been objecting to a “Google Book
settlement”. Although the project is
designed to make books more accessible,
many argue the cost is too high--violating
copyright, antitrust, and privacy laws.
According to a report by Goutam Das in
the Asian Age, the Indian Reprographic
Rights Organization, the Federation of
Indian Publishers and 15 other authors
filed their objections about violation of
Indian and international copyright laws
at the New York District Court. They feel
that this can give Google a monopoly on
out-of-print books and apprehend that
Google may charge an enormous amount
of money for access to its library.
Google Book Search has always been
controversial because it scans books
still under copyright without obtaining
permission from the authors and
publishers, and Google has been sued by
the Authors Guild and the Association of
American Publishers over it.

Under the right circumstances,
terrorists could break into

an attack on a nuclear state,

Euthanasia ?A painful decision yet may relieve untold suffering. To let go or not………..
A controversial topic indeed
and one which evokes mixed
feelings the world over and in
the misguided fervor of today
also raises confusing moral
issues.
The subject of voluntary
euthanasia is far from simple
- even the most sympathetic
cases raise difficult moral
questions.
Pro-euthanasia campaigners
say it is a matter of personal
freedom. They argue that it
is not only just, but also an
essential part of civilization that
people can be helped to die in
dignity and pain free
The pro euthanasia argument
advocates that refusing to
help a person who is beyond
medical help is immoral.
Some religious groups believe
life is sacrosanct and only God
can decide when to terminate
it. Other groups worry that
allowing any system of
legalized killing would be open
to abuse.
Opposing that view is a
coalition of opinion.
There is something to be said
about the former. It should be
given just consideration. As
long as the intention is to ease
suffering, terminally ill patients
should be given relief from
the agony they are suffering.
There comes a time when
continued attempts to cure are
not compassionate, wise or
medically sound.
If it is the desire of terminally ill
to let go, it should be given due
weight age, notwithstanding
the pain the irrevocable
decision will cause. Choosing
how we want to die is not an
option for most. Just imagine
yourself in a similar situation.
Would you like to be helped by
doctors and your friends to die
the way you want it or be kept
in a room where you can hardly
move with machines keeping
you alive? Why not end this
suffering if we have the power?
There is no point of waiting
for the person to die if there
is nothing the doctors can do
about it. If the person wishes
to die, we should please him
with their last wish. This is why
euthanasia should be legal for
anyone who desires it. And the Downside
However, in a system where
everything is open to abuse,
legalized mercy death would
also meet the same fate.
Euthanasia is not about giving
rights to the person who
dies but, instead, is about
changing the law and public
policy so that doctors, relatives
and others can directly and
intentionally end another
person’s life. People do have
the power to commit suicide.
Suicide is a tragic, individual
act.
Euthanasia is not about a
private act. It’s about letting
one person facilitate the death
of another. That is a matter of
very public concern since it
can lead to tremendous abuse,
exploitation and erosion of care
for the most vulnerable people
among us.
Legalized
Law-making with respect
to euthanasia is one thing.
Bringing the law into practice
is somewhat different. The
question arises to what extent
the new legal situation will bear
upon the medical practice.
Although Belgium and the
Netherlands are the first
countries to have legalized
euthanasia, Switzerland is the
only country that does not
punish the aid to suicide, as
long as it does not happen for
selfish reasons.
We need to reflect carefully on
the consequences of legalizing
active euthanasia. If we
enshrine the absolute right to
die, will it then become illegal
to intervene to obstruct would-
be suicide?
degrading communications
networks.
Hackers could also focus on
feeding in false information
further down the chain – or
spreading fake information
to officials in a carefully
orchestrated strike.
Governments around the world
have recently stepped up their
commitment to increasing
cyber-defence, after a number
of high-profile incidents in
which hackers launched attacks
on foreign nations. Recent
online conflicts, as well as
reported attacks on government
computer systems in the
US, UK and elsewhere have
increased the stakes.

Dear Rakesh,
It is not the new year gift but a
combination of various colored
sentiments in the form of calendar.
This calendar is unmatched,
marvelous and perfect combination
of ideas in the form of color. Truly
speaking we do not have suitable
words to express our sentimental
happiness after receiving this
calendar.
Keep it up and continue to do so
in the future as well & once again
accept our congratulation.
Thanks & regards, Izhar Alam
