What’s ART IN BearpiT? For six months, Bristol’s iconic sunken roundabout - Bearpit - will play host to unusual artistic interventions and encounters, interrupting the everyday life of the city.

Art in Bearpit is a pilot programme of commissions and events taking place from May to November 2015. Join us and local artists to rethink and celebrate the changing face and fortunes of the Bearpit.

Art in Bearpit is a partnership project produced by visual art producers Hand in Glove and initiated by Bearpit Improvement Group. Art in Bearpit is supported by Arts Council England, Bristol City Council, Gane Trust, Bearpit Social and Bear Fruit. Part of Art Weekender Bristol & Bath.

Roll up, catch your ‘snooper’s charter’ special!

Today’s headline is ‘If You Have Nothing To Hide You Have Nothing To Fear.’ Responding to the surveillance of public and private space, Kypros Kyprianou will create a curious intervention, by way of a newspaper stand stationed in the Bearpit during peak commuter times,

In a performance that veers between end-is-nigh hectoring and 50’s spy slapstick, he will give away free copies of ‘The Daily Record’ to unwitting passersby.

LUNCH, WITH FEELING A-peg

Public Gathering: Sun 27 Sep, 2-4pm,

The artist duo A-peg resurface with a playful event for hungry souls.

Having recently hosted The Cloud - a sleepover with local residents to dream of urban futures - here they revisit the roundabout to follow up by sharing food, thoughts and ideas.

Lunch, with Feeling aims to celebrate the conversations and connections inspired by Art in Bearpit. Join an informal and jovial eating pile of people. You are all invited to bring a dish to add to the mess!

PAVILION PHILIP CHEATER

Sculpture: Ongoing, all day, everyday.

A dazzling structure has taken up residence in the Bearpit. Part-sculpture and part-shelter, Philip Cheater’s design was inspired by old pavilions and bandstands, as well as the Bearpit’s previous hexagonal landscaping.

Decorated with hazard-graphics, Pavilion juxtaposes the visual language of warning with a warm invitation to gather, to meet and to celebrate – reflecting changing attitudes towards the Bearpit itself.

THE KEEPERS VICKIE FEAR

Live Performance: Sun 1 Nov, 2-4pm,

Six months after their first appearance in the Bearpit, The Keepers are back.

Watching and being watched, an eerie group of live sculptures will occupy the changing backdrop of Bristol’s iconic sunken roundabout.

Working with Bearpit regulars as her performers, Vickie Fear creates a peculiar ensemble of lurking costumed creatures. The artwork quietly disrupts the space, baffles passersby and tests the endurance of its performers.
