Welcome to spring and all the great things that come with it – especially in the way of arts, culture, heritage and other events. This is the time of year when you can hear the sound of baseball bats cracking at Spring Training games while enjoying the beautiful Central Florida weather and, later that evening, take in a show at one of the areas award-winning community theatres or see an exhibit at one of our many incredible galleries. For other daytime events, there are a wide variety of festivals – some arts related, others with a cultural bent. And that’s just a tiny sample of the offerings, so it’s easy to see why Central Florida is the place to be in the spring! Please, do yourself a favor and get out there and enjoy all that’s going on.

In February, the Polk Arts Alliance held its annual Cultural Arts Program Award (CARP) celebration at the Lakeland Center. We were extremely excited about recognizing and honoring several folks who have enhanced the arts here in Polk in very meaningful ways. For some, it was patronage and volunteer hours, for others it was revolutionary policy-making and for at least a couple, the recognition came for “carrying the banner” to make great things happen for arts, culture and heritage here at home.

Honorees included:• Lunz Prebor Fowler Architects• Tom Johnson (Theatre Winter Haven)• Dave Connor (Peterson & Myers)• Meri Mass (Polk Arts Alliance)• Jim Freeman (Manager – Polk County Government)• Bob English (former County Commissioner)• Sam Johnson (former County Commissioner)• Melony Bell (Chair - Polk County Board of County Commissioners - BoCC)• Todd Dantzler (Polk BoCC)• Edwin Smith (Polk BoCC)

Every one of this year’s honorees made a positive impact on advancing the arts in various ways over the past year. We thank them again for their service and leadership! And, as if that wasn’t enough, after the awards celebration, guests and honorees were also treated to a delightful concert by the Vienna Boys Choir – compliments of the Lakeland Center. So, a big thank you also goes out to all of our friends at the Lakeland Center, especially Mike LaPan, for providing the locale for such a beautiful event and to all those who helped plan, prepare and set up for the awards presentation. It was truly a magical evening!

Looking forward, we are already engaged in starting the application process for fiscal year 2013/14 arts, culture and heritage grants. Call us for details. And, stay tuned for details about a planned capital campaign that will further ensure a sustainable arts alliance and continued advocacy for the arts in Polk. I know you’ll want to get involved early and make your own mark in and for the arts!

As we move into the spring of 2013, the community looks forward to all the great spring cultural events upon us and they are plentiful! I am looking forward to our festivals, concerts and fairs that always bring out the best in talent and crowds. They are examples of what we have to offer the cultural and heritage tourist, one of the fastest growing tourism attractions in Florida. All this is included in our creative industry sector which is the 5th largest employer in Polk County and and is similarly ranked statewide. What the arts community represents is a sizable and significant industry in our County. This important sector fosters economic development, attracts high-level businesses, bolsters tourism and, as we know, the arts are critical in education and quality of life. Major cities reference a strong arts and cultural environment as an important factor in the recruitment and relocation of companies to their area. The Polk Arts Alliance has worked very hard to advocate for the arts and successfully achieved support of the Cultural Arts Council and all the arts in our community. Because of our achievements, we are looking forward to greater marketing opportunities reaching the cultural tourist and resulting in due recognition of all we have to offer in the arts in Polk County. This spring, the Polk Arts Alliance will begin our membership campaign for the coming year so we can continue our advocacy efforts for all the arts. As with all the nonprofit arts organizations, we rely on membership, sponsors and donors to help fund our mission. We are not a venue, we have no shows or ticket sales, but as the voice for all the arts, we do make a difference! It is now time to support the Polk Arts Alliance and help PAA continue our work to carry on the support and advocacy of all the arts that inspire us all.

Polk Museum of Art proudly presents the 42nd Annual MIDFLORIDA Mayfaire by-the-Lake from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, May 11 and 12, 2013, on the shores of Lake Morton in downtown Lakeland. Admission is free.

Begun as a crafts fair on the lawn of the Lakeland Public Library, MIDFLORIDA Mayfaire by-the-Lake has grown into one of Florida’s premier outdoor art festivals and among the Top 100 outdoor art festivals in the nation. Held on Mother’s Day weekend each year, Mayfaire is one of the largest and oldest outdoor art festivals in Central Florida. The event attracts about 65,000 visitors every year. Parking is free, as is a shuttle service to parking and around the lake.

The juried show features 185 artists displaying their jewelry, sculptures, paintings and more. Both days include a full slate of live entertainment, food and drink vendors, and a children’s area with a hands-on Children’s Art Tent appropriate for children of all abilities, a bounce house, rock-climbing wall and more.

Beginning at 5 p.m. May 11, Mayfaire Saturday Night moves the fun to the Lake Mirror Promenade for a free street dance party and fireworks display. In addition, about 1,200 athletes are expected to participate in the 34th Annual Mayfaire Classic 5K Road Race & Walk, sponsored by the Lakeland Runners Club. The race begins at 7 p.m. at Lake Mirror Center. Find more information at LakelandRunnersClub.com/Mayfaire.

During MIDFLORIDA Mayfaire by-the-Lake, Polk Museum of Art admission is free to everyone. This year, the exhibition “C. Paul Jennewein: An Usher for a New American Style,” featuring works from the Tampa Museum of Art’s permanent collection, will be on view in the main galleries. The Museum Shop will be having a fabulous Mother’s Day sale, too!

Are you a teenager with something to say but need a way to put it out there for the world to see?

Arts Ensemble wants you to express yourself!

Join resident artists from 6 to 10 p.m. on the last Friday of each month and tap into your inner creativity through a variety of fun and exciting art projects at the Teen Art Warehouse in the Eloise Resource Center, 710 Snively Ave.

“This is a safe, creative escape for teenagers,” said Jane Waters Thomas, executive director of the Arts Ensemble Education Foundation and Healing Arts Center. “It’s four hours of music, painting, drawing, singing, photography, and more!”

Budding recording artists have the opportunity to gain insight and experience in what it takes to record a piece of music.

Jose Viera, a 20-year-old musician and theology major at Southeastern University, takes teenagers through the steps in creating a CD of their own to take home.

“They can come and make beats – music, melodies, and a baseline. They can create any style,” Viera said.

Viera and about 14 of his friends will be on hand to help with lyric and music writing, creating beats, providing backup vocals, and recording songs.

Music is developed electronically with a keyboard and computer equipment. Styles range from country and rock to rap and hip hop.

“We can sit with you and literally create the sound for you,” he said.

For writers who wish to read and record short works, volunteers will help with that too.

Viera challenges teens to keep lyrics clean while reaching beneath the surface to find deeper meanings in their words.

“Come and create something,” he said. “We give you an environment where you can feel special and are free to express yourself.”

Waters said the monthly program will expand to meet the needs of local teens.

“We do this once a month to keep it fresh. We have many experienced artists who donate their time and talent to teach teens and young adults their favorite art,” Waters said.

As more teens discover Teen Art Warehouse, it will be available more often.

Viera knows first-hand just how important the arts are to teenagers who need a creative outlet.

“I came out of a situation where I wished people had reached out to me,” he said. “We are doing something to give back to the kids and keep them off the streets.”

For more information, call Jane Waters Thomas at 863-272-2258.

The ISO’s April concert “Coming Home” will feature an original composition by one of the premier jazz and classical father-son duos in the world set to a backdrop of images of one of the most famous nature photographers of all time. “Ansel Adams: America” is a tribute to the love of the west shared by both Dave and photographer Ansel Adams. Both men persuaded the world to accept new forms of art by reinventing their respective mediums.

The one movement piece fully integrates sweeping melodies with 102 striking images of or by Ansel projected on a giant screen behind the orchestra as they play.

“We got a book of 400 photographs of Ansel Adams. We’d look at the photos and try to think about the music that would go with the photograph-- Half Dome in Yosemite, Merced River, Great Falls coming down, Quiet Meadows. I didn’t stop writing for one month, mostly at night... (Adams) loved Bach and Chopin, so I’ve incorporated Chopin-esque kind of piano playing and Bach kind of piano playing into the piece. And it’s a tug of war between the camera and the piano that I’m trying to depict.”

Many people don’t know that prior to Adams becoming a photographer he actually studied to become a concert pianist. His friends begged him not to pursue photography actually telling him that photography wasn’t an art and that the camera could not express the human soul like music.

The end result is a piece that fills the senses while evoking nostalgia and hope. As majestic images of Half Dome and Horsetail Falls fade in and out on a giant screen, the music builds and then melts to mirror the majesty of a church or echoes the southwestern style as a mission takes the screen. The effect is both inspiring and humbling.

Unfortunately Dave Brubeck passed away hours before the world learned that “Ansel Adams: America” received a 2013 Grammy nomination for Best Instrumental Composition. Brubeck was a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award winner and Library of Congress Living Legend for his innovative classical and jazz work, including the creation of the jazz standard Take Five. His son Chris, is a multi-instrumentalist and the leader of the Brubeck Brothers Quartet.

“Ansel Adams: America” has been played to sold out theaters across the country and is credited for exposing new audiences to the possibilities of classical music. For tickets visit imperialsymphony.org or call 863.688.3743.

Paul Jennewein:An Usher for a New American StyleApril 27 - July 20, 2013

The work of C. Paul Jennewein, a highly regarded American architectural sculptor of the mid-20th century, will be the subject of a new exhibition at Polk Museum of Art. The show, which features pieces from the Tampa Museum of Art’s permanent collection, will run April 27 through July 20.

Jennewein (1890-1978) immigrated to the United States from Germany in 1907 and within four years of his arrival began receiving important national and international art commissions that drew upon his skills as an ornamental sculptor and as a painter. He is widely recognized for introducing the Art Deco style into American architecture. Following Jennewein’s death, more than 2,000 works from his studio were donated to the Tampa Bay Art Center (now Tampa Museum of Art) by his family.

Jennewein studied sculpture at the Art Students League in New York and won a three-year scholarship to study at the American Academy in Rome in 1916. The artist drew heavily from the art he studied during his four years in Italy, particularly mythological subject matter and the classical Greco-Roman tradition. Among Jennewein’s accomplishments are the pedimental sculptures at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, an installation on the façade of the British Empire Building at Rockefeller Center, New York, two statues at the Robert F. Kennedy Department of Justice Building in Washington, D.C., and two relief panels installed inside the White House.

The exhibition will be celebrated at a reception from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, April 26, at the Museum. The event, which is free for members and $10 for guests, will feature light hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar beginning at 7 p.m.

Like most people coming of age at 21, Platform Art plans to celebrate its 10th Anniversary and make its 21st Party (or Art Party 21) the one to really remember.

Scheduled for Saturday, April 20 from 7 to 11 p.m., Art Party 21 will feature emerging talent in visual arts, film, fashion, sound and performance in a relaxed, fun atmosphere. Food, wine and beer will be available for purchase. In addition, as a coming of age party Platform Art will celebrate those artists who began as emerging artists and who's work have “come of age”.

“Art Party 21 is an opportunity for any one – art lovers and novices alike – to experience art in a variety of formats,” says Cynthia J. Haffey, executive director of Platform Art, which is celebrating its 10th Anniversary this year. “In one area, you may see sculptures, while in another interpretive dance, and still another a short film. It is a very high energy event and there’s something for everyone.”

Started as a showcase for new artists in a variety of genres, Art Party and its parent organization, Platform Art, is designed to cultivate an understanding and appreciation of art in its many forms. Two parties are held each year, in the spring and fall. Platform Art also hosts events for children once a year (kids.5) , but Art Party 21 is true to its name – designed for adults 21 and over.

“It’s more of a fun date night for mom and dad than a family outing,” explains Haffey.

Most Art Party events showcase only new, emerging talent, but Art Party 21 will feature artists from throughout Florida who began exhibiting with the organization and have gone on to achieve professional success. These artists include Trent Manning (Winter Haven), Samantha Churchill (Bradenton), James Lasley (Gainesville) and Tony Savoie (Orlando).

In total, Platform Art has profiled more than 300 artists; 200 independent films; 50 salons, studios and clothiers; countless jazz, reggae, fusion, Latin, Gospel, folk, indie, R&B, pop, classical, blues and soul musicians; as well as dance, speed painting, spoken word and cabaret performances.

Discount tickets for the 10th Anniversary celebration, Art Party 21 are available for $10 per person at www.platformart.org. Tickets are $20 per person on the day of the event. Members of Platform Art enjoy a variety of added benefits, including an open bar and special VIP area at the event. All proceeds go to supporting Platform Art, a not-for-profit organization committed to cultivating an understanding and appreciation of art in its many forms.

Based in Lakeland, Fla., Platform Art is now the largest visual and multi-genre event in Polk County, providing adults and children access to art and artists in a social and interactive environment. For more information, please visit www.platformart.org.

Polk Museum of Art and the Cities of Winter Haven and Lakeland are pleased to announce the selection of 20 new sculptures that will be displayed in downtown parks as part of the 13th Annual Florida Outdoor Sculpture Competition. The sculptures will be installed throughout March and public celebrations are planned for both cities.

“We value our longstanding partnership with both cities and are especially delighted to welcome the City of Lakeland back to the competition,” said Claire Orologas, executive director at the Museum. “The presence of public art is an asset to any community, and these dynamic sculptures certainly will contribute to the vibrancy and beauty of our downtown areas.”

In Winter Haven, 10 winning sculptures will be installed in the Central Park area for the eighth consecutive year. The exhibition will be celebrated, and Winter Haven show winners announced, at the annual Central Park Stroll from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 9. The Stroll is free and open to the public; attendees will be invited to vote on a People’s Choice winner that evening, also.

In Lakeland, 10 winning sculptures will be installed along Lemon Street, where FLOSC winners were displayed between 2001 and 2007. The exhibition will be celebrated, and Lakeland winners announced, at a celebration later this spring.

Every year, sculptures are selected by a committee of community members and Museum staff for the Florida Outdoor Sculpture Competition. Those sculptures are displayed for a year. An independent judge selects the Best of Show, Second Place and Honorable Mention awards, which are announced at the public celebrations planned by the cities.

Celebrate Dance FestivalMay 4 at 7pm: Free public performance at Lake Mirror Promenade

Florida Dance Theatre is offering an opportunity to unite area dance students from public school dance programs and area dance studios to celebrate National Dance Week©. The program, held May 2 through 4, gives aspiring young dancers, ages 10 and up, the chance to participate in Master Classes in a variety of techniques from well-known teachers from around the state. Participants also have the possibility to perform by submitting a group dance piece of 5 minutes or less, that may be chosen for a performance at the beautiful Lake Mirror Promenade on Saturday, May 4th at 7:00 p.m. that is free to the public.

“While National Dance Week© has long been an annual observance in America, it has also been one of the dance community’s best kept secrets. The American dance community is today more aware of the annual celebration but bringing it to the forefront of the public’s attentions remains a challenge and major goal. With a Mission Statement to “heighten the awareness of Dance and its contributions to our culture”, it is of the utmost importance that all dancers become involved and active in the programs and presentations held each year. Only through the concerted efforts of all will we ever reach our goal to bring Dance out of the background of the Arts in our nation. It will be through the dedicated work of all dancers that the American public will come to realize that dance can affect all aspects of life, that dance is a true global language and can impact all facets of living! “

Do you like to try your hand at solving mysteries? Do you like to mingle with friends and meet new ones? Do you like to have a lot of fun? If you do, the Ramon Theater is the place to be. Since the restoration of the Theater was completed in 2008 one of the most popular traditions for drawing people to the Ramon is the Murder Mystery Dinners.

Each event is carefully decorated to suit the theme of our Murder Mystery. We’ve had “Death In Them Thar Hills”, “ Murder Is Par For The Course”, “Quicker Than The Eye” , “The Cat Screamed at Midnight”, to name a few, and many others, including “I Saw Mommy Killing Santa Clause” which was our most recent one that was presented on New Year’s Eve.

In fact, the biggest costume party in Frostproof is the yearly MMD, held each year in October, near the date of Halloween. Even though it’s not always a Halloween theme, we encourage everyone to dress in “costume” and prizes are awarded for categories such as “Most Original”, “Scariest” and well, you get the idea. Just image driving through the small city of Frostproof and seeing crowds of people, “in costume”, walking toward the Ramon Theater.

One of the great things about the Ramon is that about 90% of our guests travel from nearby cities to attend our events. We always have first-timers, and repeat attenders, that marvel at this venue in southeast Polk County that has become a “destination”.

With new direction from our “hands on” Board President, Diana Biehl, and active participation by all Board members, the Ramon Theater is emerging as a viable source of entertainment.

The Ramon Theater’s next Murder Mystery Dinner, “Lurking Down The Bunny Trail” will be presented on April 6th. Join the Ramon Theatre for dinner and their own “cast of characters.” Tickets can be purchased online at www.ramontheater.com or by calling 863-635-7222.

Schedules, times and details available in Mid April

Oh my. I must love being witless.

As the world’s most successful musical has clearly shown, I have great company with 60 million others who have witnessed the “witless.” And, that’s just on stage.

Maybe the Observer--along with many of the other London critics (one said: “Les Misérables has, sadly, been reduced to The Glums,”)--ought to fire their drama critics. Never have so many been wrong about so much.

Along with the 60 million, the show has been produced in forty-two countries and translated into 21 languages, has over 47 cast recordings and won over 100 major theatre awards.

The Broadway production was nominated for 12 Tony Awards and won eight, including Best Musical and Best Original Score.. It stands fourth all-time behind Phantom, Cats and Chicago in attendance.

The production has played over 48,000 professional performances, and now made available to community theatres ---with three local productions within 6 months--- there are bound to be 48,000 more. In fact, the Guinness Book of Records confirmed that Les Miz had more concurrent productions (15 at one time) than any other musical in history. That record is likely to be broken( more like pulverized in the next 12 months).

In London, where the original show is in its 28th year, it’s the longest-running musical ever. In America, at least four national touring companies have taken it to some 200 cities. More people have seen the tour in Orlando than the latest Magic games since Shaq left.

In 2002 it was made available to students under 19 to perform in the abbreviated Les Misérables School Edition. In almost ten years, more than 145,000 students in over 2,900 productions worldwide have occurred.

Worldwide the stage version is about to hit 2 billion dollars (that’s billion), and now, with a third Broadway revival in 2014 following the 400 million dollar grossing movie (that was before the Oscars), Les Misérables takes it’s place squarely among the most successful theatrical ventures of all time. The movie is on course to become the highest-grossing musical in North American box-office history flying past Grease and Mama Mia and Chicago.

Great news for Cameron Macintosh, the original producer. It is said that Victor Hugo, the author of the original 19th century novel, sent the world’s shortest telegram when he wanted to know how his novel was selling. He sent a question mark; his publisher replied with an exclamation point.

Mr. Macintosh would have used the dollar sign.

At Polk State, Art Professor FindsWhat New York City Was Missing

Standing among a dozen scattered easels in a Polk State College classroom, Holly Sailors is a long way from where she’s been — but exactly where she wants to be.

Until a few months ago, Sailors’ story was the quintessential aspiring-artist-makes-it-big kind of tale. She’s studied art at the graduate level, shown her work around the world, taught other aspiring artists, and made a name for herself in New York City’s art circles.

For all her success, however, something was missing, something she’s found right here as Polk State’s newest art professor.

“I wanted to teach, and Polk State has given me the chance to do that full time. Being here has brought me back to the core values of art,” said Sailors.

Sailors grew up in rural North Carolina, dreaming of becoming a professional artist. She studied at the Savannah College of Art and Design, the University of Georgia, and East Carolina University before finally landing in New York City, where she received her Master of Fine Art from the New York Academy of Art.

Her works — oil paintings and prints that are also commentaries on women’s issues and rights — are in permanent collections from

Georgia to New York to Germany. Her teaching experience is just as extensive, including stints at the New York Academy of Art and Long Island University.

To the outsider, living and working in New York City would seem the ultimate goal for an artist. But as Sailors explains, she’s always considered herself equal parts artist and teacher. She can’t do one without the other. Coming to Polk State has afforded her the opportunity to teach full time, and in this ever-connected world, the move doesn’t mean she has to leave New York’s art scene entirely.

“New York is only a flight away. Contemporary culture is so Internet-driven that it is easy to stay connected to a lot of art scenes,” she said, adding she’ll be showing her work in Body Politic, an upcoming show at New York City’s Grand Salon of the National Arts Club, proof of the balance she intends on striking between the two locations. “I can have the best of both worlds.”

At Polk, Sailors is teaching courses in drawing, painting and design at both the Lakeland and Winter Haven campuses, as well as the Polk State Lake Wales Arts Center. No matter where she is around the county on a given day, she’s gaining new perspective on art.

“There’s an intensity to the New York art scene, a nature that is not very grounded. It’s been refreshing to simplify, to get back to the basics,” she said.

“My students here are interested in things that I haven’t been interested in for a long time. They’re very influenced by Disney, and are interested in animation and cartooning. Being here already has broadened my sense of creativity, of what art- making can be.”

Longtime Polk State Art Professor Gary Baker said Sailors has infused his department with exciting new energy.

“She’s bringing, not to be cliché, a breath of fresh air. She has a very positive, healing kind of attitude,” he said.

“If you remember the movie Jerry Maguire, there was that catchphrase, ‘You had me at hello.’ Holly, during her job interview, she had me when she said, ‘I want to teach.’ There was something about the sincerity and humbleness in that statement that just got me right then and there.

“She has an enthusiasm that makes the students want to work and a relaxed and gentle way of teaching that will help them improve their skills.”

Sailors said helping her Polk State students develop and improve their skills is exactly what she aims to do for many years to come. This is her home now.

“I’m going to invest my time here, working with my students one-on-one to expose them to as much knowledge as possible for their educational path,” she said.

Due to severe structural damage to the Clay Cut Center, Haines City Community Theatre seeks a location to perform their final show of the season and also a place they can move into as a permanent residence.  Haines City Community Theatre has been located in the Clay Cut Center for over 25 years, and is greatly saddened by this latest development, but safety will always remain their first priority.

Haines City Community Theatre will continue to update both it’s website at www.hainescitytheatre.com and the answering machine at the theatre 863-421-1893 as new developments arise.  Once a determination is made as to whether or not the final show of the season will be performed, theatre staff will contact all season ticket holders either through mail, email, or telephone concerning the new location for the performance and any refunds they have coming at that time. Should anyone wish to contact the theatre directly concerning a venue they have available for the theatre to perform in, they can email the theatre directly through their web site or leave a message on the answering machine.

Haines City Community Theatre is grateful to all their patrons for continued support through these difficult times.

Choral music was ringing throughout Lakeland during the TMC Hymnology Series, Together We Sing – A Celebration of Hymn Singing in America. This five week series, which ran on consecutive Tuesday evenings from January 15 through February 12, presented four of Lakeland’s esteemed church musicians as they lectured on the importance of hymn singing in their churches; and each evening audience members joined together to sing many of the important hymns in the liturgy. The lectures were presented by Mr. Robert Boulware, Mr. Patrick Fleitz, Dr. Dan Gordon, and Dr. Larry Sledge; it was a thrill to hear these experts speak so passionately about the musical heritage of their denominations.

Choir members from the community added their voices at each lecture and audience members were introduced to some of Lakeland’s esteemed organists and pianists; Dr. J. David Hart at First Presbyterian Church, Mr. Kevin Townsend at All Saints Episcopal Church, and Mrs. Carol Boulware. On February 12, all presenters joined for a final session of singing and fellowship.

The Tuesday Music Club was able to offer this lecture/concert series to the Lakeland community without charge thanks to a grant from the Florida Federation of Music Clubs.
