    Before and After Science: 2010 Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art27 February 2 May 2010 Galleries 22, 23, 24, 25

    Admission: Free

The flagship visual arts event of the Adelaide Festival, the 2010 Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art: Before and After Science assembles 22 of the nations most innovative and exciting contemporary artists and artist groups to present a wondrous and unsettling vision of our world, in which mystery and the unknowable wrestle with order and reason.

Inspired by the concepts of alchemy and transformation, independent Melbourne curators Charlotte Day and Sarah Tutton have selected new cutting-edge works which, through their use of media, theme or narrative, change the humble into the precious, the old into the new, and the mundane into the magical.

Installation and sculpture using traditional and non-traditional materials feature strongly alongside collage, film and painting to create an extraordinary exhibition experience. Many works are being displayed for the first time in this exhibition and all have been created since the 2008 Adelaide Festival.

The 2010 Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art is presented by the Art Gallery of South Australia and the Adelaide Festival with generous assistance from the Australia Council for the Arts. It is also supported by the Gallerys DEPARTURE program for people in their 20s and 30s.

Artists included in the Biennial are: Hany Armanious, Benjamin Armstrong, John Barbour, Matthew Bradley, Mikala Dwyer, Diena Georgetti, Simryn Gill, Newell Harry, Nicholas Mangan, Gabriella and Silvana Mangano, Martumili Artists: Jakayu Biljabu, Yikartu Bumba, Doreen Chapman, May Chapman, Nancy Chapman, Linda James, Donna Loxton, Mulyatingki Marney, Reena Rogers, Beatrice Simpson, Ronelle Simpson, Rosie Williams, James Morrison, Callum Morton, Doreen Reid Nakamarra, Michelle Nikou, David Noonan with the Victorian Tapestry Workshop, Stuart Ringholt, Sandra Selig with Leighton Craig, Christian Thompson, Louise Weaver, Justene Williams, Simon Yates.

The Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art is supported by the Visual Arts and Craft Strategy, an initiative of

the Australian, state and territory governments.

The Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art is assisted by the Australian Government through the Australia

Council, its arts funding and advisory body.

This display pays tribute to the beauty and artistry of the book, presenting works that are vital to its historical development. From early austere woodcut illustrations of the northern Renaissance to elaborate plates produced by artists in private presses of the early twentieth century, the works comprise three kinds of book-related artwork: illustration, bookplates and artists books.

Gloria Strzelecki, research assistant, speaks about the display.

Doreen Reid Nakamarra was an extremely talented artist and a highly regarded ambassador for the Pintupi people. This display pays tribute to her and the other Pintupi women artists who are gaining worldwide recognition for their unique and sophisticated style of painting. These works celebrate their exceptional ability to illustrate ancestral knowledge and ongoing travels through country. Pulsating with rhythmic patterns, the works of Doreen create optical illusions, rising and falling as with the desert terrain.

Tuesday 9 March 12.45 pmJane Messenger, Curator of European Art, speaks about selected works in the display.

This display highlights recent acquisitions of Australian and international art. Some of the works included explore the representation of race: from AfricanAmerican artist Kara Walkers screenprint Emancipation Approximation scene #5, to British-born, Trinidad-based artist Chris Ofili, whose prints Black Kiss represent the Biblical story of Judas betraying Christ with a kiss in the Garden of Gethsemane.

The important legacy of Pop art is evident in a number of works, including Damien Hirsts screenprints from The Last Supper series and in Belgium artist Koen Wastijns sculpture Puma, where the stuffed puma creates a silhouette identical to the Puma sports brand.

Other works, such as the moving-image work by Daniel von Sturmer and a large-scale drawing by Mira Gojak explore both formal and psychological terrain. Gojaks exploratory line poses and resolves formal problems through movement across a white ground.

Patricia Piccinini is one of Australias leading contemporary artists and has a growing international profile. They have presented complex ethical issues about developments in science and our relationship with the natural world. Piccininis work has embraced a wide array of media, including still photography, computer-generated images, video and sculptural installations and film. She exhibits widely within Australia and overseas and has work in all the major Australian state collections, and in numerous international public and private collections.
