1. TWO-DIMENSIONAL AND THREE- DIMENSIONAL SHAPES A figure takes a fragment from the space we draw on. The space left is the background. Shapes/figures that are represented on a two-dimensional space only have two spatial dimensions: high and width but not depth. Drawings, paintings, photographs, images at the cinema are two-dimensional images. On the other hand there are figures that take a three-dimensional space. For example a pot made of clay has three spatial dimensions: hight, width and depth. Sculptures and buildings are three dimensional objects. We can walk around a 3D object to see different sights of its shape: the back, the front and the profiles.

2. SHAPES ON 2D SPACE -Plane shapes (when no volume is represented) Plane shapes in one colour, simplified, and with no details can be seen easily and worked out better. We find plain shapes on posters, logotypes, traffic signals etc.

Sometimes it is not necessary to represent the third dimension. Even a photographer can choose to make a photo with no volume in it.

-We can represent third dimension on a plain surface (paper, canvas etc) by using different techniques:

1. CHIAROSCURO: it is a procedure by which we can get a 3D sensation in objects. It consists of creating some progressive ranges of light, from lightness to darkness to get volume on a bi- dimensional space. So, for example with chiaroscuro we can make a circle to be seen as a sphere. It is used on paintings and drawings. As masters of this technique we have the Italian painter Caravaggio from the Baroque time. We see in his paintings a strong contrast between shade and light and how often backgrounds appear almost totally in black making this way the illuminated figures be very remarkable. Velazquez and Rivera were also very important in Spain, and Rembrandt in Holland.

2. SUPERIMPOSITION OF FORMS: we can suggest volume by placing some forms in front of another. So the ones at the front are supposed to be closer to the viewer and the ones behind farther. This technique appears often in images from Art History.

3. BY MAKING THE SIZE OF FORMS SHORTER: our perception is regulated by different norms. One of them tells us that the objects that are closer to us seem to be bigger than the objects that are far away, they logically appear smaller to us. And also on plain surfaces the upper space depicts the farthest space and the down space depicts the closest space. Forms with the same size will be seen smaller as they get closer to the horizon line.

4. PERSPECTIVE: by using perspective in our drawings we can get a high level of realism. Perspective is a method of representation which allows us to draw 3D objects on a plain surface, so these objects get a very realistic appearance. These are different systems of representation: -Diedric system -Projections in cavalier perspective -Axonometric system -Conic system

All of these have got their particular norms but the most important thing is that you can create the sensation of depth by using them. In conic perspective, two parallel straight lines cut each other in one point located in the infinite space. This is possible because our natural system of vision.
