writingCREATIVE WRITInG: InTRODUCTIOn This course introduces beginning writers to the practice of ‘free writing’, a technique that has helped many writers to overcome fear of the blank page, and tap into their own innate writing voice. During this course, students learn how to construct character, develop plot, and evoke theme and mood through descriptive language. ADVAnCED SHORT FICTIOn WORkSHOP The course will be conducted as a ‘Writing Workshop’ with students’ writing serving as the chief basis for discussion. Students submit portions of their stories according to an agreed-upon submission schedule. DESIGn: SCULPTURE & ARCHITECTURE This course starts with weekly explorations of diverse design principles that are applied in various ways, such as stacking, cutting, carving, casting and adding. SCULPTURE: An InTRODUCTIOn TO MATERIALS This course offers an in-depth exploration of a variety of traditional and contemporary sculpture materials. PHOTOGRAPHy IThis course covers camera operation, flash techniques, basic lighting set-ups, and post-production solutions including Photoshop, digital printing, developing film, and presentation methods. Critiques, individual meetings and slide presentations will contextualize photo projects in contemporary photography practices and provide technical and creative resources. PRInTMAkInG: DRyPOInT Drypoint is the art of incising an image into a surface with a sharp instrument. Traditionally this was done with an etching needle on a metal plate. The etching needle has unique mark-making capabilities in that the resulting marks range from delicate to bold, fine to dramatic. In this course students explore the use of Plexiglas as a surface, and use an etching needle along with other types of sharp implements. This intensive course is open to all level of experiences and consists of six sessions, each six hours in length.Wednesdays 10am - 5pm, Sep 11 - Oct 16 (Session 1) ORWednesdays 10am - 5pm, Oct 30 - Dec 4 (Session 2) Jenn Robins Material fee: $65 (Plates, inks and sundry materials will be provided, along with a supply of paper)

PAInTInG: InTRODUCTIOn ILearn the basics of paint handling, colour mixing, brushwork and composition in this introductory course. Classes include hands-on demonstrations, the use of still life, found imagery, live models and photographs. Tuesdays 2pm - 5pm, Sep 10 - Dec 10 Jeremy Herndl

PAInTInG WITH GOUACHE This course introduces students to the medium of gouache, an opaque watercolour-like medium that dries with a smooth, velvety finish. Gouache is ideal for the beginner painter as it is much more forgiving than watercolour because its opaque nature allows you to paint light over dark.Fridays 10am-1pm, Sep 13 - Dec 13 Kate Scoones

At the intermediate level students develop an understanding of composition, colour synthesis and subject matter. LAnDSCAPE PAInTInG: BEyOnD THE PICTURESqUE This course explores the different themes and approaches relevant to landscape painting today, such as notions of beauty, the sublime and the picturesque, as well as ugliness, artifice, and the implications of digital technology. PAInTInG: ADVAnCED I The focus in this course is on developing students’ ideas and methods concerning their painting practice and on developing work that is part of a specific series that investigates a personal area of interest. Subject matter includes still life, the figure, landscape, architectural space and student-supplied source material such as objects and photographs. Thursdays 2pm - 5pm, Sep 12 - Dec 12 (Section 1) ORSaturdays 10am - 1pm, Sep 14 - Dec 14 (Section 2) Tracey Nelson DRAWInG: InTERMEDIATE I This drawing course is designed to transition students from drawing based on direct observation, such as drawing from still life or nude models, to drawings that reflect a more subjective, conceptual approach to mark making.
